Perceptions of bias in HIV prevention services, happiness with social support, and anticipated PrEP stigma among Black and Latine/x sexual and gender diverse individuals.

Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective preventive treatment for HIV, anticipated PrEP stigma can hinder uptake. Perceptions of bias in HIV prevention and evaluations (e.g., happiness) tied to social support among Black and Latine/x sexual and gender diverse (SGD) individuals could be important correlates of anticipated PrEP stigma. To further this line of inquiry, a national sample of 872 Black and Latine/x SGD individuals who had and had never taken PrEP (Mage = 25.1, SD = 2.8) reported how they perceived HIV prevention and how happy they were with their social support

Variation in Trust in Cancer Information Sources by Perceptions of Social Media Health Mis- and Disinformation and by Race and Ethnicity Among Adults in the United States: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Mis- and disinformation on social media have become widespread, which can lead to a lack of trust in health information sources and, in turn, lead to negative health outcomes. Moreover, the effect of mis- and disinformation on trust in information sources may vary by racial and ethnic minoritized populations. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated how trust in multiple sources of cancer information varied by perceptions of health mis- and disinformation on social media and by race and ethnicity. METHODS: Cross-sectional, nationally representative survey data from noninstitutionalized adults in

Illness perception and psychosocial adjustment in young and middle-aged liver transplant recipients during the early postoperative period: the serial mediating roles of perceived social support and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial adjustment is an important component of recovery after liver transplantation, particularly among young and middle-aged recipients during the early postoperative period. Although illness perception has been associated with psychosocial adjustment, the statistical pathways underlying this association in this population remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between illness perception and psychosocial adjustment and to determine whether perceived social support and quality of life statistically mediated this association. METHODS: A questionnaire surve

Longitudinal Cohort Study of the Relationship Between Illness Perception, Perceived Social Support, and Psychosocial Quality of Life in Adolescents and Young Adults Newly Diagnosed with Cancer: Outcomes from a BRIGHTLIGHT Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Social support can enhance psychosocial health-related quality of life (PSQOL) in adult cancer patients. Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer face unique psychosocial challenges that intersect with key developmental milestones. Theoretical models propose that illness perceptions and social support are key determinants of coping strategies and long-term health outcomes in this context. These may be especially salient for AYAs, for whom peer relationships and identity formation are central. METHODS: We explored how perceived social support and illness perceptio

Examining perceptions, social, and policy factors influencing hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine uptake: a PEN-3 cultural model mixed-methods study of healthcare workers in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: The timely administration of the birth-dose hepatitis B (HepB-BD) vaccine is recommended by global and national guidelines to effectively prevent perinatal transmission. In high-disease-burden countries, such as Nigeria, the adoption of the HepB-BD vaccine remains limited. Emerging global policy discussions highlight the need to examine healthcare workers' (HCWs') perceptions of pediatric vaccination guidelines, the safety and effectiveness of the HepB-BD vaccine, and how family, social support, and community factors influence vaccine delivery. METHODS: A convergent mixed-method

Perceived social risk in medical decision-making for physical child abuse: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The medical literature reports differential decision-making for children with suspected physical abuse based on race and socioeconomic status. Differential evaluation may be related to differences of risk indicators in these populations or differences in physicians' perceptions of abuse risk. Our objective was to understand the contribution of the child's social ecology to child abuse pediatricians' perception of abuse risk and to test whether risk perception influences diagnostic decision-making. METHODS: Thirty-two child abuse pediatrician participants prospectively contributed

Biological motion processing as a hallmark of social cognition.

Visual processing of biological motion (BM) produced by living organisms is of immense value for successful daily-life activities and, in particular, for adaptive social behavior and nonverbal communication. Investigation of BM perception in neurodevelopmental disorders related to autism, preterm birth, and genetic conditions substantially contributes to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underpinning the extraordinary tuning to BM. The most prominent research outcome is that patients with daily-life deficits in social cognition are also compromised on visual body motion processing. Th

Evidence accumulation during self-referential social processing captures social functioning and psychopathology dimensions in a transdiagnostic sample.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis, social anxiety, and autism are clinical constructs that share important phenotypic features, particularly social dysfunction. A critical determinant of social functioning is an individual's ability to recognize when social cues, such as eye gaze, are meant for them. Emerging computational modeling data in psychosis suggest that altered gaze perception stems from deficits in evidence accumulation - the process of gathering and integrating information - when processing social cues. We investigated whether aberrant evidence accumulation during gaze perception is associated

Social cognition and social functioning in nonclinical paranoia.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with nonclinical paranoia show many of the same biases as those with clinical paranoia, suggesting that paranoia exists on a continuum. However, little is known about the various social cognitive processes found in paranoia and how these relate to social functioning and social behaviours in general. This study will examine performance on emotion perception and attributional style measures and their relationship to social functioning, social problem solving, and social skill. A key element in this study will be the incorporation of ambiguity in the perception of emotional

Social cognition and the superior temporal sulcus: implications in autism.

The most common clinical sign of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is social interaction impairment, which is associated with communication deficits and stereotyped behaviors. Based on brain-imaging results, our hypothesis is that abnormalities in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) are highly implicated in ASD. These abnormalities are characterized by decreased grey matter concentration, rest hypoperfusion and abnormal activation during social tasks. STS anatomofunctional anomalies occurring early across brain development could constitute the first step in the cascade of neural dysfunctions unde

Brain stimulation to left prefrontal cortex modulates attentional orienting to gaze cues.

In social interactions, we rely on non-verbal cues like gaze direction to understand the behaviour of others. How we react to these cues is determined by the degree to which we believe that they originate from an entity with a mind capable of having internal states and showing intentional behaviour, a process called mind perception. While prior work has established a set of neural regions linked to mind perception, research has just begun to examine how mind perception affects social-cognitive mechanisms like gaze processing on a neuronal level. In the current experiment, participants performe

Social cognition over time in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis: Findings from the NAPLS-2 cohort.

Deficits in social cognition are well established in schizophrenia and have been observed prior to the illness onset. Compared to healthy controls (HCs), individuals at clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR) are said to show deficits in social cognition similar to those observed in patients experiencing a first episode of psychosis. These deficits have been observed in several domains of social cognition, such as theory of mind (ToM), emotion perception and social perception. In the current study, the stability of three domains of social cognition (ToM, social perception and facial emotion perc
