The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster remains a promising model organism for research in space biology.

Exploring deep space and creation of bases on other bodies in the Solar System requires increased spaceflight duration and prolonged exposure to different gravity conditions. Most physiological changes under these conditions occur at the cellular level, but the long-term consequences of such effects remain unexplored. The structural and functional characteristics of cells are similar across animal species, but research into issues related to aging and lifespan, development and the reproductive system, the transgenerational inheritance of information about environmental factors is more convenie

Estimating CO2 emissions due to present and future suborbital space tourism industry.

Estimating and predicting CO2 emissions are the keys to achieving the overall greenhouse gas emission goals for 2030 and 2050. Recent surges in space tourism have generated significant interest and concern. However, the associated CO2 emission and potential future increase remain largely uncertain due to limited publicly available information from the industry. Focusing on suborbital flights, we develop an analytical model to estimate the associated CO2 emissions, considering differences in spacecraft, fuel types, and flight characteristics. The model is based on basic physical principles and

An eye on long-duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges.

Space flight-associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long-duration space flight and is detected in two-thirds of astronauts. In-flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic 'superfocus adjustable' glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds. While the optic disc oedema resolves on returning to gravitational force, the choroidal folds and axial length shortening remain. Controversy remains over the role of intracranial pressure in the development of these changes. A recent case report has re-energised the debate as to

Microgravity as a contributing factor to venous thromboembolism development: Risks and prevention strategies.

Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) being the third most occurring cardiovascular disease in the world after Myocardial Infarction and Stroke is very fatal. Being a multi-factorial disease, several risk factors in the terrestrial condition plays crucial part in the disease topography. Once exposed to microgravity, the weightlessness influences several thrombotic parameters, thus making astronauts in-flight to develop higher blood viscosity and increased risk of VTE. An astronaut travelling to the International Space Station developed a blood clot in the left internal Jugular vein, according to a rece

The hypercapnic environment on the International Space Station (ISS): A potential contributing factor to ocular surface symptoms in astronauts.

With increasing advancements and efforts towards space exploration, there is a pressing need to understand the impacts of spaceflight on astronauts' health. Astronauts have reported signs and symptoms of dry eye disease upon traveling to the International Space Station (ISS), thus necessitating an evaluation of the factors that contribute to the onset of spaceflight associated dry eye disease. Prior literature describes the hypercapnic environment of the ISS; however, the link between the high CO2 levels and astronauts' symptoms of dry eye disease remains unexplored. Due to the terrestrial rel

Comparison of dose and risk estimates between ISS Partner Agencies for a 30-day lunar mission.

The International Partner Agencies of the International Space Station (ISS) present a comparison of the ionizing radiation absorbed dose and risk quantities used to characterize example missions in lunar space. This effort builds on previous collaborative work that characterizes radiation environments in space to support radiation protection for human spaceflight on ISS in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and exploration missions beyond (BLEO). A "shielded" ubiquitous galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) environment combined with--and separate from--the transient challenge of a solar particle event (SPE) was

Design of a modular controlled unit for the study of bioprocesses: Towards solutions for Bioregenerative Life Support Systems in space.

Space exploration beyond the Low Earth Orbit requires the establishment of Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSSs), which, through bioprocesses for primary resource recycling, ensure crew survival. However, the introduction of new organisms in confined space habitats must be carefully evaluated in advance to avoid unforeseen events that could compromise the mission. In this work, we have designed and built an experimental chamber, named Growing/Rearing Module (GRM), completely isolated and equipped with micro-environmental monitoring and control systems. This unit is specially intended fo

How spaceflight challenges human cardiovascular health.

The harsh environmental conditions in space, particularly weightlessness and radiation exposure, can negatively affect cardiovascular function and structure. In the future, preventive cardiology will be crucial in enabling safe space travel. Indeed, future space missions destined to the Moon and from there to Mars will create new challenges to cardiovascular health while limiting medical management. Moreover, commercial spaceflight evolves rapidly such that older persons with cardiovascular risk factors will be exposed to space conditions. This review provides an overview on studies conducted

Radiation on Earth or in Space: What Does It Change?

After having been an instrument of the Cold War, space exploration has become a major technological, scientific and societal challenge for a number of countries. With new projects to return to the Moon and go to Mars, radiobiologists have been called upon to better assess the risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted from space (IRS), one of the major hazards for astronauts. To this aim, a major task is to identify the specificities of the different sources of IRS that concern astronauts. By considering the probabilities of the impact of IRS against spacecraft shielding, three conclusions

Effects of head-down tilt bed rest plus elevated CO2 on cognitive performance.

Microgravity and elevated CO2 levels are two important environmental spaceflight stressors that can adversely affect astronaut cognitive performance and jeopardize mission success. This study investigated the effects of 6° head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR) with (n = 11 participants, 30-day HDBR) and without (n = 8 participants, 60-day HDBR) elevated ambient (3.73 mmHg) CO2 concentrations on cognitive performance. Participants of both groups performed all 10 tests of NASA's Cognition battery and a brief alertness and mood survey repeatedly before, during, and after the HDBR period. Test scores wer

Generating waist area-dependent ground reaction forces for long-duration spaceflight.

Prolonged microgravity exposure greatly weakens the bones and muscles of astronauts. This is a critical biomechanical issue for astronauts as they may be more prone to bone fractures. To combat this issue, lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is a concept that generates artificial gravitational forces that may help strengthen bones and muscles during long-term spaceflight. Negative pressure, defined as below ambient pressure, is applied within a chamber that encompasses the lower half of the body. By increasing the negative pressure, more ground reaction forces (GRFs) are generated beneath the

Dynamic disequilibrium of macromolecular transport as possible mechanism for hydrocephalus associated with long-term spaceflight.

Hydrocephalus associated with long term spaceflight (HALS) for missions lasting over five months is well described but poorly understood. While structural changes of the brain due to microgravitational forces affecting the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been described as one potential cause, we propose an alternative hypothesis based on dynamic disequilibrium of macromolecular transport across the blood brain barrier. We propose that factors altering physiology under conditions of spaceflight such as microgravity, hypercapnia, venous hypertension, medications, and dietary substa

The response of bone to unloading.

Skeletal unloading leads to decreased bone formation and decreased bone mass. Bone resorption is uncoupled from bone formation, contributing to the bone loss. During spaceflight bone is lost principally from the bones most loaded in the 1-g environment, and some redistribution of bone from the lower extremities to the head appears to take place. Although changes in calcitropic hormones have been demonstrated during skeletal unloading (PTH and 1,25(OH)2D decrease), it remains unclear whether such changes account for or are in response to the changes in bone formation and resorption. Bed rest st

Failure of metoclopramide to control emesis or nausea due to stressful angular or linear acceleration.

Orally administered metoclopramide (REGLAN) at doses of 10 or 20 mg, 75 min prior to either stressful linear acceleration (parabolic flight) or cross-coupled accelerative semicircular canal stimulation in a rotating chair was evaluated for its ability to prevent emesis or nausea II, respectively. Although metoclopramide is an effective antiemetic agent that enhances gastric emptying and prevents cancer chemotherapy-induced emesis, we were unable to demonstrate any significant (p less than 0.05) effects of this drug on motion sickness.

Analysis of nystagmus response to pseudorandom velocity input.

This report describes a method to analyse the vestibular system when subjected to a pseudorandom angular velocity input. A sum of sinusoids (pseudorandom) input lends itself to analysis by linear frequency methods. Resultant horizontal ocular movements were digitized, filtered and transformed into the frequency domain. Programs were developed and evaluated to obtain the auto spectra of input stimulus and resultant ocular response, cross spectra, the estimated vestibular-ocular system transfer function gain and phase, and coherence function between stimulus and response functions.

KC-135 flights for life science activities.

The KC-135 Reduced Gravity Facility at the Johnson Space Center is a useful support facility for conducting brief zero gravity life science experiments, as well as for validating hardware designs and experimental protocols for more extensive shuttle-based experiments. This paper discusses the zero gravity capabilities of the aircraft, preparations for and conduct of the flight tests, and the procedures for requesting a flight. Several Ames Research Center experiments and procedure demonstrations are described. Finally, a crew perspective is presented that discusses the similarity of the KC-135
