Working Memory Phenotypes in Early Multiple Sclerosis: Appraisal of Phenotype Frequency, Progression and Test Sensitivity.

Working memory (WM) impairments are common and debilitating symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), often emerging early in the disease. Predominantly, WM impairments are considered in a binary manner, with patients considered either impaired or not based on a single test. However, WM is comprised of different activated subcomponents depending upon the type of information (auditory, visual) and integration requirements. As such, unique WM impairment phenotypes occur. We aimed to determine the most frequent WM phenotypes in early MS, how they progress and which WM test(s) provide the best measure

Is It Fear? Similar Brain Responses to Fearful and Neutral Faces in Infants with a Heightened Likelihood for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show atypical processing of facial expressions. Research with autistic toddlers suggests that abnormalities in processing of spatial frequencies (SFs) contribute to such differences. The current event-related-potential (ERP) study investigated differences between 10-month-old infants with high- and low-likelihood for ASD in SF processing and in discrimination of fearful and neutral faces, filtered to contain specific SF. Results indicate no group differences in general processing of higher (HSF, detailed) and lower-SF (LSF, global) information. H

Spatio-temporal processing in multiple sclerosis.

The processing of spatial and temporal detail was investigated in patients with multiple sclerosis. Normal observers and 13 patients with optic neuritis secondary to multiple sclerosis performed a battery of visual tests that included contrast sensitivity, temporal integration, evoked potentials, and visual masking. The multiple sclerosis patients exhibited losses of pattern processing, and these deficits became more noticeable when the patterns were presented briefly. Moreover, these patients exhibited diverse response patterns for the different visual tests. For some, temporal integration fu

Map-based navigation: Individual differences in perspective taking and path integration.

Spatial navigation is an everyday activity that necessitates multiple cognitive processes, including map reading, perspective taking, and path integration (tracking position and orientation during self-motion). These processes must work in concert to enable individuals to orient themselves and locomote to goal locations, but it remains unclear whether proficiency in one type of spatial processing necessarily implies proficiency in other forms of spatial processing during navigation. Here, we study the processes of transforming a map-indicated viewpoint to locate and move to surrounding invisib

Neuronal correlates of spatial memory updating: c-Fos and GAD67 expression in the object-place recognition task.

The retrieval of spatial memory is behaviorally often assessed in tasks like the classical Object-Place-Recognition (OPR) task that requires an updating of memory. The neural dynamics across interconnected brain regions underlying retrieval processing in such tasks, are not well understood. Here, we examined in rats the neural correlates of retrieval processing in the OPR task by comparing a condition of successful OPR retrieval, in which the displaced object during the retrieval phase (3-hours after encoding) induced a spatial memory updating (OPR condition), with a stationary (STA) control c

Is there a cost in forming statistical summary representations at multiple spatial scales?

Visual processing often entails forming statistical summary representations (SSRs) to encode properties of groups of similar objects. It has been debated whether forming these representations-also referred to as ensemble coding-requires limited capacity resources. We ask for the first time whether forming SSRs at multiple spatial scales incurs a cost in visual processing efficiency. Inspired by Navon's hierarchical stimuli, we spatially arrange several small tilted rectangles to create multiple large tilted rectangles. Participants estimate the mean orientation of either the large rectangles (

Implications of number-space synesthesia on the automaticity of numerical processing.

Number-space synesthetes visualize numbers in specific spatial configurations. Their spatial-numerical perceptions are assumed to be automatic in nature and have been found to affect performance in various numerical tasks. The current study tested whether synesthetic number-space associations can modulate the well-established Size Congruency Effect (SiCE), which is considered to be an indication for the automaticity of numerical processing. Two groups, number-space synesthetes and matched controls, were tested on a numerical Stroop task (Henik and Tzelgov, 1982). In separate blocks, participan

Detection and localization of conspecifics in ghost knifefish are influenced by the relationship between the spatial organization of receptors and signals.

The detection and localization of signals rely on arrays of receptors, and their spatial organization plays a key role in determining the accuracy of the system. Weakly electric ghost knifefish rely on a distributed array of electroreceptors to detect spatially diffuse electric signals from conspecifics. While we know that spatial resolution for small objects, such as prey, is enhanced near the head due to a high receptor density, it is not clear how receptor organization influences the processing of global and diffuse signals from conspecifics. Using spatially realistic modeling, we quantifie

Robust collection and processing for label-free single voxel proteomics.

With advanced mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics, genome-scale proteome coverage can be achieved from bulk tissues. However, such bulk measurement lacks spatial resolution and obscures tissue heterogeneity, precluding proteome mapping of tissue microenvironment. Here we report an integrated wet collection of single microscale tissue voxels and Surfactant-assisted One-Pot voxel processing method termed wcSOP for robust label-free single voxel proteomics. wcSOP capitalizes on buffer droplet-assisted wet collection of single voxels dissected by LCM to the tube cap and SOP voxel processing in

Spatial and feature-selective attention interact to drive selective coding in frontoparietal cortex.

Attention enables the selective processing of relevant information. Two types of selective attention, spatial and feature-selective attention, have separable neural effects but in real life are often used together. Here, we asked how these types of attention interact to affect information coding in a frontoparietal 'multiple-demand' (MD) network, essential for attentional control. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with multivariate pattern analysis, we examined how covert attention to object features (colour or shape) and spatial locations (left or right) influences coding of

Organization of face and object recognition in modular neural network models.

There is strong evidence that face processing in the brain is localized. The double dissociation between prosopagnosia, a face recognition deficit occurring after brain damage, and visual object agnosia, difficulty recognizing other kinds of complex objects, indicates that face and non-face object recognition may be served by partially independent neural mechanisms. In this paper, we use computational models to show how the face processing specialization apparently underlying prosopagnosia and visual object agnosia could be attributed to (1) a relatively simple competitive selection mechanism

Frequency Importance Functions in Simulated Electric Acoustic Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: In electric acoustic stimulation (EAS)-the combined use of a cochlear implant (CI) and a hearing aid (HA) within the same ear-effective speech perception depends on the integration of low-frequency acoustic input and high-frequency electric input. This spectral integration can be influenced by spatial overlap between the most apical CI electrode contact and functional acoustic hearing regions. Despite its prevalence, the impact of spatial overlap on spectral integration and speech perception remains unclear. This study derived frequency importance functions (FIFs) for simulated EAS

Spatial generalization of peripherally encoded memories emerges before selection for report.

Visual working memory has been shown to transition from location-specific to spatially generalized representations. It remains unclear what the time course of this generalization is and to which information processing stages and signals it is linked. Here we used EEG to investigate spatial generalisation of peripherally encoded stimuli before and after an item was selected for report. Thirty healthy participants memorized two orientations presented serially at fifteen degrees eccentricity to the left and right of central fixation. One of the two items was subsequently cued as task-relevant. Du

Eye blinks as a visual processing stage.

Humans blink their eyes frequently during normal viewing, more often than it seems necessary for keeping the cornea well lubricated. Since the closure of the eyelid disrupts the image on the retina, eye blinks are commonly assumed to be detrimental to visual processing. However, blinks also provide luminance transients rich in spatial information to neural pathways highly sensitive to temporal changes. Here, we report that the luminance modulations from blinks enhance visual sensitivity. By coupling high-resolution eye tracking in human observers with modeling of blink transients and spectral

Auditory processing and learning/memory following erythropoietin administration in neonatally hypoxic-ischemic injured rats.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a common injury arising from prematurity/complications at birth and is associated with later language, auditory, and learning impairments. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of two doses (300 or 1000 U/kg) of Erythropoietin (Epo) in protecting against neuropathological and behavioral impairments associated with HI injury in rats. METHODS: HI injury (right carotid artery cauterization and 120 min of 8% O(2)) was induced on postnatal day 7 (P7) and Epo or saline was administered i.p. immediately following the procedure. Auditory processing and learning/

Perspectives on applied spatial analysis to animal health: a case of rodents in Thailand.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing have been increasingly used in ecology and epidemiology, providing a spatial approach for animal health issues. Recent development of earth environmental satellites--i.e., their growing number, improving sensor resolutions and capabilities--has offered new opportunities to delineate possible habitats and understand animals and associated parasites in their environment, by identifying the nature and structure of land use, hydrological network, soil hydromorphy, and human settlements. Integrated into GIS, remotely sensed and other geo-refer

Effects of complete monocular deprivation in visuo-spatial memory.

Monocular deprivation has been associated with both specific deficits and enhancements in visual perception and processing. In this study, performance on a visuo-spatial memory task was compared in congenitally monocular individuals and sighted control individuals viewing monocularly (i.e., patched) and binocularly. The task required the individuals to view and memorize a series of target locations on two-dimensional matrices. Overall, congenitally monocular individuals performed worse than sighted individuals (with a specific deficit in simultaneously maintaining distinct spatial representati

STAT3D as a new image-tailored Xenium-based spatial transcriptomics tool for accurately dissecting the tumor microenvironment.

Spatial transcriptomics enables researchers to study gene expression within tumor microenvironments at single-cell resolution while preserving tissue architecture. However, analyzing spatial omics data is challenging due to the complexity of the outputs, including large-scale images, millions of transcripts, and numerous spatial coordinates. Moreover, standard volumetric segmentation is often hampered by optical blurring and signal bleed-through in out-of-focus z-planes, which built-in tools in current platforms (e.g. Xenium Explorer) cannot solve. To overcome these challenges, we introduce ST

ST-ConMa: a multimodal foundation framework for spatial transcriptomics via image-gene contrastive and matching learning.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) enables the spatial mapping of gene expression by combining tissue images with spot-level gene expression profiles, allowing for the analysis of gene distribution and interactions between adjacent regions. Although numerous deep learning models have been developed for ST, most existing approaches are task-specific, and multimodal foundation models with broad knowledge of ST remain scarce. While a few ST multimodal models currently exist, they have been either trained on low-resolution tissue images or developed for a specific platform, thereby limiting their genera

White matter microstructure and its association with visuospatial processing development during early infancy.

This study assessed relations between white matter microstructure at one month of age and visuospatial processing abilities at six months of age. Participants included ninety-one infants (n = 48 female) born after singleton non-complicated pregnancy. The infants underwent MRI at one month of age and a behavioral assessment at six months of age. Results revealed that the intensity of toy play was associated with fractional anisotropy (FA) of the right (t = 3.002, adjusted p = 0.038) and left superior cerebellar peduncle (t = 2.799, adjusted p = 0.038) and right cingulate gyrus (t = 2.908, adjus
