One Health Genomic Analysis of Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase‒Producing Salmonella enterica, Canada, 2012‒2016.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) confer resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, a major class of clinical antimicrobial drugs. We used genomic analysis to investigate whether domestic food animals, retail meat, and pets were reservoirs of ESBL-producing Salmonella for human infection in Canada. Of 30,303 Salmonella isolates tested during 2012-2016, we detected 95 ESBL producers. ESBL serotypes and alleles were mostly different between humans (n = 54) and animals/meat (n = 41). Two exceptions were blaSHV-2 and blaCTX-M-1 IncI1 plasmids, which were found in both sources. A subclade

Spectrum of Mesenchymal-Epithelial Transition Aberrations and Potential Clinical Implications: Insights From Integrative Pancancer Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The receptor tyrosine kinase mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET) is frequently altered in cancers and is a common therapeutic target for cancers with MET variants. However, abnormal MET alterations and their associations with patient outcome across different cancer types have not been studied simultaneously. In this study, we try to fill the vacancy in a comprehensive manner and capture the full MET alteration spectrum. METHODS: A total of 10,967 tumor samples comprising 32 cancer types from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets were analyzed for MET abnormal expressi

Diet-Induced Obesity Affects Muscle Regeneration After Murine Blunt Muscle Trauma-A Broad Spectrum Analysis.

Injury to skeletal muscle affects millions of people worldwide. The underlying regenerative process however, is a very complex mechanism, time-wise highly coordinated, and subdivided in an initial inflammatory, a regenerative and a remodeling phase. Muscle regeneration can be impaired by several factors, among them diet-induced obesity (DIO). In order to evaluate if obesity negatively affects healing processes after trauma, we utilized a blunt injury approach to damage the extensor iliotibialis anticus muscle on the left hind limb of obese and normal weight C57BL/6J without showing any signifi

Clinicopathologic analysis of 6 lymphomatoid gastropathy cases: expanding the disease spectrum to CD4-CD8+ cases.

Lymphomatoid gastropathy, which was first reported in 2010, is a rare NK-cell proliferation of cyCD3, CD4, CD5, CD8, CD56 phenotypes with unknown etiology. The diagnosis is challenging, as there is histopathologic similarity to malignant lymphoma. In the 2010 report on 10 cases, all lesions were located in the stomach, and all regressed without any therapy. In the present study, we analyzed 6 cases of lymphomatoid gastropathy by investigating the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings. Endoscopic and morphologic appearances of all cases were consistent with previous rep

Mitochondrial enzyme dysfunction in autism spectrum disorders; a novel biomarker revealed from buccal swab analysis.

AIM: Mitochondrial function studies in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have detected skeletal muscle mitochondrial enzyme deficiencies in respiratory complex (RC) activities. As a muscle biopsy is expensive and invasive, we assessed RC-I and RC-IV activities in buccal swabs. METHODS: 92 children with ASD and 68 controls were studied with immunocapture for RC-I and microspectrophotometry for RC-IV. RESULTS: Significant RC activity deficiencies were found in 39 (42%) ASD patients (p < 0.01) and more prevalent in more severe cases. Aberrant RC overactivity was seen in 9 children. RC-I/RC-IV act

Visible light-induced photocatalytic reaction of gold-modified titanium(IV) oxide particles: action spectrum analysis.

Action spectrum analyses showed that visible light-induced oxidation of 2-propanol by aerated gold-modified titanium(IV) oxide (titania) suspensions is initiated by excitation of gold surface plasmon, and polychromatic irradiation experiments revealed that the photocatalytic reaction rate depends strongly on properties of titania, such as particle size, surface area and crystalline form (anatase or rutile) and on properties of gold deposits, such as size and shape.

Diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD): fatty acid ethyl esters and neonatal hair analysis.

Measuring levels of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in hair has been recently shown to discriminate between adult heavy and non-drinkers. Here, we review the potential of neonatal FAEE measurement in detecting infants exposed to alcohol in utero by outlining current progress in the development of a neonatal hair test for the diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Developing a reproducible, accurate and predictable hair test for FAEE measurements in neonatal hair may prove to be a powerful tool in the detection of in utero alcohol exposure which is needed for the diagnosis of FASD.

Frequency-dependent brain state dynamic alterations in autism spectrum disorder: A co-activation pattern analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that affects normal brain development and results in impaired brain function. Most studies have focused on connectivity changes within the traditional low-frequency range, whereas the frequency-dependent nature of brain dynamics remains largely unexplored. This study employed whole-brain co-activation pattern (CAP) analysis to investigate the frequency-dependent spatiotemporal dynamics of spontaneous brain activity in ASD across three frequency bands: LFO (0.01-0.1 Hz), slow-5 (0.01-0.027 Hz), and slow-4 (0.027-0.073 Hz).

Phenotype Analysis in Two Families With Otopalatodigital Syndrome Spectrum Disorder Based on FLNA Gene Variants.

Otopalatodigital spectrum disorders (OPDSD), comprising otopalatodigital syndromes types 1 and 2 (OPD1, OPD2) and frontometaphyseal dysplasia (FMD), are rare X-linked disorders caused by FLNA gene variants, with phenotypes ranging from mild skeletal anomalies to severe multisystem malformations. We describe two unrelated cases: a 14-year-old male (P1, FMD) and an aborted fetus (P2, OPD2). Whole-exome sequencing identified hemizygous maternally inherited FLNA gene variants in P1 (c.733G>A; p.Glu245Lys) and P2 (c.3707G>A; p.Gly1236Asp, novel), expanding the OPD2 mutational spectrum (NM_001110556
