16 S rRNA-based molecular identification of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species in neonates with sepsis and their antibiotic resistance patterns in Ahvaz, Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are among the leading causes of neonatal sepsis (NS). NS can be divided into two types: early-onset sepsis (EOS), which usually occurs less than 72 h after birth, and late-onset sepsis (LOS), which can occur 8 to 28 days after birth. According to newly published statistics, the incidence rates of EOS and LOS in neonates are 0.5-3.1% and 2-32%, respectively. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of common CoNS isolates and their antibiotic resistance patterns in NS cases in Ahvaz, Iran. METHODS: This cross-sectional study (October 20

Mediastinitis after cardiac surgery: improvement of bacteriological diagnosis by use of multiple tissue samples and strain typing.

The diagnosis of postsurgical mediastinitis (PSM) among patients with sternal wound complication (SWC) after cardiac surgery is sometimes difficult, as fever, elevated C-reactive protein levels, and chest pain can be caused by a general inflammatory reaction to the operative trauma and/or sternal dehiscence without infection. The definitions of PSM usually used emphasize clinical signs and symptoms easily observed by the surgeon. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the use of standardized multiple tissue sampling, optimal culturing methods, and strain typing, together with a microb

Identification of Variable Traits among the Methicillin Resistant and Sensitive Coagulase Negative Staphylococci in Milk Samples from Mastitic Cows in India.

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus causing bovine mastitis has been very well investigated worldwide. However, there are only limited reports on the characterization of methicillin resistant and sensitive coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) across the globe. Hence, in the present study, we aim to determine the phenotypic traits based on antimicrobial susceptibility profile and genotypic characterization by verifying the presence of resistance determinants, virulence and toxin genes present in the CoNS causing clinical mastitis. We obtained 62 CoNS isolates from 167 mastitic milk s

The Multi-Component Causes of Late Neonatal Sepsis-Can We Regulate Them?

Elucidating the mechanisms of bacterial translocation is crucial for the prevention and treatment of neonatal sepsis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of lactoferrin to inhibit the development of late-onset blood infection in neonates. Our investigation evaluates the role of key stress factors leading to the translocation of intestinal bacteria into the bloodstream and, consequently, the development of life-threatening sepsis. Three stress factors, namely weaning, intraperitoneal administration of Gram-positive cocci and oral intake of Gram-negative rods, were found to

[Implantation of a Modular Distal Femoral Replacement with Compressive Osseointegration as a Salvage Procedure in a Complex Femoral Posttraumatic Setting].

BACKGROUND: Large bone defects and losses play a crucial role in both tumour surgery and in complex primary and revision total knee replacement. The established options of cemented or uncemented long intramedullary stems are limited by large bone defects and are at risk from relatively high exposure to aseptic loosening. There is no general valid agreement on implant fixation of the distal femur. A further option is the cementless fixation method with compressive osseointegration, based on the so-called Wolff law of bone remodelling. This method was developed in order to reduce the high loosen

The Urethral Microbiota of Men with and without Idiopathic Urethritis.

Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is a common genital tract syndrome in men, and up to 50% of cases are considered idiopathic, i.e., no etiological agent is identified. This poses challenges for clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of NGU and often results in antibiotic misuse and overuse. Therefore, to identify potential infectious causes of urethritis and inform clinical management of urethritis cases, we characterized and compared the urethral microbiota of men with and without idiopathic urethritis. Participants were derived from a case-control study that examined viral and bacterial pat

Detection of the mecA Gene and Its Association With Antimicrobial Resistance Among Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Isolated From Clinical Samples in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) have become major pathogens causing a variety of infections. Antimicrobial resistance, brought about by the acquisition of the mecA gene, further exacerbates this burden. This gene encodes the altered membrane-bound protein called penicillin-binding protein (PBP2a), which lowers the binding affinity for β-lactam antibiotics. The widespread distribution of this gene has led to the surge of methicillin-resistant CoNS (MR-CoNS). Therefore, this study aimed to detect the prevalence of the mecA gene and its correlation with antimicrobial resistan

The pattern of micro-organisms and the efficacy of new macrolide in acute lower respiratory tract infections.

Lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is one of the major health problems in developing countries such as Indonesia. According to the National Household Health Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in 1992, LRTIs still rank fourth as the main cause of death in Indonesia. The problem of LRTIs could be simply managed as long as the causative organism can be identified and the proper antibiotic known. In some occasions, it is not quite so easy to identify the causative micro-organism, especially in lower tract infections. There are several methods of obtaining specimens from LRTIs for cul
