[Rapid tolerance to ethanol and high voluntary alcohol consumption in mice selected for brain weight].

Mice of two strains selected for small and large brain weight (SB and LB, respectively) had free access to 10% alcohol and water within three months. At the end of this period, they consumed alcohol in daily dose of 6.9 +/- 0.9 and 7.5 +/- 0.8 g/kg, respectively. After a period of imposed three-day abstinence, the alcohol consumption by the mice of these strains increased by 68.6 and 49.3%, respectively. Exploratory behavior of independent groups of mice from these strains was studied in the closed cross-maze. The animals were injected with ethanol (2.4 g/kg, i.p.) or vehicle twice with a week

Role of the substantia nigra in audiogenic seizures: a neuroethological analysis in the rat.

The audiogenic crisis (AC) includes an initial phase of bursts of circular, stereotyped running. Since it has been shown that the nigrostriatal system is important in the control of lesion- and drug-induced stereotyped rotational behavior, the effects of unilateral electrolytic lesions of the substantia nigra (SN) on the AC were investigated. Behavior was recorded using a detailed ethogram by means of systematic observational techniques and analyzed quantitatively in terms of sequential structure by multivariate statistical methods. An index of susceptibility was computed on the basis of the f

Risperidone for the core symptom domains of autism: results from the study by the autism network of the research units on pediatric psychopharmacology.

OBJECTIVE: Risperidone has been found efficacious for decreasing severe tantrums, aggression, and self-injurious behavior in children and adolescents with autistic disorder (autism). The authors report on whether risperidone improves the core symptoms of autism, social and communication impairment and repetitive and stereotyped behavior. METHOD: The database from an 8-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (N=101) and 16-week open-label continuation study (N=63) of risperidone for children and adolescents with autism was used to test for drug effects on secondary outcome measures: scores

Differential neurochemical and behavioral adaptation to cocaine after response contingent and noncontingent exposure in the rat.

RATIONALE: In naive rats, passive administration of drugs of abuse preferentially increases extracellular dopamine (DA) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell as compared to the core. Repeated exposure to the same drugs results in behavioral and biochemical sensitization characterized by stereotyped activity and reduction of the shell/core DA response ratio. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to study the neurochemical and behavioral effects of response-contingent vs response-noncontingent drug administration in rats, who were bilaterally implanted with chronic intracerebral guide cannulae and

An Honest Joker reveals stereotypical beliefs about the face of deception.

Research on deception detection has mainly focused on Simple Deception, in which false information is presented as true. Relatively few studies have examined Sophisticated Deception, in which true information is presented as false. Because Sophisticated Deception incentivizes the appearance of dishonesty, it provides a window onto stereotypical beliefs about cues to deception. Here, we adapted the popular Joker Game to elicit spontaneous facial expressions under Simple Deception, Sophisticated Deception, and Plain Truth conditions, comparing facial behaviors in static, dynamic nonspeaking, and

The role of nigral and thalamic output pathways in the expression of oral stereotypies induced by amphetamine injections into the striatum.

Microinjections of amphetamine into the ventrolateral striatum (VLS) elicit a striking behavioral syndrome characterized by compulsive oral and forelimb motor stereotypies. The neural pathways that mediate these behavioral responses downstream from the striatum have not yet been identified. In a series of experiments, we investigated the involvement of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) and the ventromedial nucleus of the thalamus (VMT) in the mediation of this behavioral syndrome. We demonstrated that lidocaine-induced reversible inactivation of the SNr reduced amphetamine-induced ste

A Gender Bias in the Attribution of Creativity: Archival and Experimental Evidence for the Perceived Association Between Masculinity and Creative Thinking.

We propose that the propensity to think creatively tends to be associated with independence and self-direction-qualities generally ascribed to men-so that men are often perceived to be more creative than women. In two experiments, we found that "outside the box" creativity is more strongly associated with stereotypically masculine characteristics (e.g., daring and self-reliance) than with stereotypically feminine characteristics (e.g., cooperativeness and supportiveness; Study 1) and that a man is ascribed more creativity than a woman when they produce identical output (Study 2). The Interplay Between Sex-Biased Parenting Attitudes and Children's Gender Nonconformity in the Psychological Adjustment of School-Age Children.

Research on parental attitudes toward children's gender-related behaviors suggests that parents often treat boys and girls differently and apply varying degrees of pressure on children to conform to traditional gender norms. These pressures can negatively affect children's psychological adjustment. Compared to their cisgender peers, gender-diverse children tend to experience greater psychosocial challenges. In the present study, 1411 parents of children aged 6-12 completed questionnaires including the Italian adaptation of the Sex-Biased Parenting Scale (SB-PIQ), which assesses parental attitu

Effects on stereotypy and other challenging behavior of matching rates of instruction to free-operant rates of responding.

Research has shown that when individuals are in situations that do not occasion one form of motoric responding, they will engage in another so that the overall level of motoric responding is homeostatic. The purpose of this study was to test whether students would substitute task-related behaviors for stereotypic or other challenging behaviors when the opportunity for active responding did or did not match the level of motoric responding in a free-operant baseline. Four students with mental retardation participated. Results showed that they did substitute behaviors, with stereotypic and other

Annetocin, an annelid oxytocin-related peptide, induces egg-laying behavior in the earthworm, Eisenia foetida.

Annetocin, an oxytocin-related peptide which we isolated from the earthworm Eisenia foetida, induced a series of egg-laying-related behaviors in the earthworms. These stereotyped behaviors consisted of well-defined rotatory movements, characteristic body-shape changes, and mucous secretion from the clitellum. Each of these behaviors is known to be associated with formation of the cocoon in which eggs are deposited. In fact, some of the earthworms injected with annetocin (> 5 nmol) laid eggs. Such egg-laying-related behaviors except for oviposition were also induced by oxytocin, but not by Arg-

Protective and restorative effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Jitai tablet against methamphetamine-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) is a psychostimulant with high abuse liability that affects the monoamine neurotransmitter systems, particularly the dopamine system. Currently there are no effective medications for the treatment of METH abuse to restore METH-induced dopaminergic dysfunction. The Jitai tablet (JTT), a commercial traditional Chinese medicinal preparation, has been shown to modulate the dopaminergic function both in heroin addicts and in morphine-dependent rats. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in a rodent model, whether JTT can protect against METH-induced neurot

Genes for sexual behavior.

The mating behavior of Drosophila melanogaster is a stereotyped sequence of fixed action patterns, composed of orientation, tapping, singing, licking, attempted copulation and copulation. Mutations that block a unique aspect of mating behavior were isolated and analyzed at the cellular and molecular levels. The wild-type counterparts of the mutated genes were shown to rescue the phenotypes by their ubiquitous or targeted expression in some of the mutants. This strategy of artificial control of fly behavior opens up an avenue for studies to identify the neural center for individual behavioral a

Involvement of D1 and D2 dopamine systems in the behavioral effects of cocaine in rats.

Cocaine (5-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) enhanced locomotion and rearing accompanied with head circling and body shaking. Although at 40 mg/kg typical stereotypy licking occasionally appeared, 40% of the rats died. At doses that did not affect physiologic locomotion and rearing, the D1-receptor antagonist SCH23390 but not D2 antagonist raclopride inhibited locomotion and rearing stimulated by cocaine (20 mg/kg). All behavioral responses of cocaine were abolished with increasing doses of raclopride and SCH23390. Sulpiride, a D2 antagonist, exerted a biphasic effect on locomotor activity (i.e., a

The effect of group-dynamics, collaboration and tutor style on the perception of profession-based stereotypes: a quasi-experimental pre- post-design on interdisciplinary tutorial groups.

BACKGROUND: Group processes in inter-professional Problem-Based Learning (iPBL) groups have not yet been studied in the health-care educational context. In this paper we present findings on how group-dynamics, collaboration, and tutor style influence the perception of profession-based stereotypes of students collaborating in iPBL groups. Health-care students are trained in iPBL groups to increase their ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Previous research focusing iPBL in healthcare implies that more systematic studies are desired, especially concerning the interaction

Stereotypes override grammar: Social knowledge in sentence comprehension.

Many studies have provided evidence for the automaticity and immediacy with which stereotypical knowledge affects our behavior. However, less is known about how such social knowledge interacts with linguistic cues during comprehension. In this ERP sentence processing study we took advantage of the rich grammatical gender morphology of Spanish to explore the processing of role nouns in which stereotype and grammatical cues were simultaneously manipulated, in a factorial design. We show that stereotypical knowledge overrides syntactic cues, highlighting the immediacy with which stereotype knowle

Toward a broader view of social stereotyping.

Stereotyping effects are typically considered to be assimilative in nature: A member of a group stereotyped as having some attribute is judged to have more of that attribute than a member of some comparison group. This article highlights the fact that stereotyping effects can also occur in the direction of contrast--or even null effects-- depending on the nature and form of the outcome being assessed (from the researcher's perspective, the dependent variable of interest). Relying on theory and research from the shifting standards model (M. Biernat, M. Manis, & T. F. Nelson, 1991), this review

[Care for the patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration].

In frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), which primarily involves the front of the brain, characteristic psychiatric symptoms and disordered behaviors, such as disinhibition and stereotypical behaviors, often appear in the foreground at the initial stages of the disease. It is therefore an extremely difficult disease to treat. However, unlike diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, which involve general dementia, there is a clear dissociation between the conserved and disordered functions; therefore, it is possible to enhance the conserved functions and simultaneously modify the disordered f

Effects of intrastriatal administration of selective dopaminergic ligands on spontaneous stereotypy in mice.

Abnormal repetitive behaviors are often associated with specific developmental, genetic, and neuropsychiatric disorders. Repetitive motor behaviors, often referred to as stereotypies, have been studied extensively as they can be readily induced by certain drugs (e.g., amphetamine). Recent work has shown, however, that such drug-induced models of stereotypy may not accurately reflect the neurobiological perturbations responsible for the spontaneous manifestation of these behaviors. The present study employed the deer mouse model of spontaneous and persistent stereotypy to evaluate the capacity

Activity Budgets of Captive Cape Fur Seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) Under a Training Regime.

Ethograms and time budgets are crucial for the behavioral assessment of nonhuman animals in zoos, and they serve as references for welfare research. This study was conducted to obtain detailed time budgets of trained Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) in captivity, to evaluate variations of these patterns, and to determine whether abnormal behaviors had been displayed. Behavioral data for 3 Cape fur seals in the Wroclaw Zoo were collected, and more than 300 observation hours (during a 12-month period) per individual were analyzed. The studied animals exhibited a diversified repertoire of
