Effects of transcutaneous electrical stimulation on vocal folds adduction.

According to most previous studies, inducing movements in internal laryngeal muscles by transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) was impossible. However, the movements have been reported after using needle electrodes inserted into the internal superior laryngeal nerve (ISLN). Herein, we aimed to apply an innovative TES protocol to cause movements in vocal folds. A short duration and high frequency electrical current was applied by two surface electrodes just above the entrance of ISLN to larynx. The subjects were 32 normal participants (mean age = 23.87; SD = 3.43). During TES application,

A Case Report: Hybrid Treatment Approach to Lipoid Proteinosis of the Larynx.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research on treatment of lipoid proteinosis has focused on genetic etiology and clinical diagnosis of this rare laryngeal disorder. However, few studies on this disorder have examined treatment methods directed at improving voice qualities. The purpose of this study was to examine a novel hybrid treatment approach and its improvements in the patient's voice quality. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this case study, a 27-year-old man complaining of hoarseness of voice and effortful phonation was diagnosed with lipoid proteinosis. He was then prescribed a combination of surgical

The effect of retinyl palmitate on healing of benign vocal fold lesions.

The leading cause of vocal fold lesions such as nodules and polyps is phonotrauma, which causes microhematoma formation in the vocal fold cover that can initiate an inflammatory process. Vitamin A (Vit A) is essential for immunity, cellular differentiation and maintenance of respiratory epithelium. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Vit A (retinyl palmitate) on healing of vocal fold lesions, including vocal polyps and nodules. Eighteen patients with vocal fold lesions were included in the study. Of the patients, 13 had vocal polyps and 5 had vocal nodules. Patients received

Endoscopic laser anterior commissurotomy for anterior glottic web: one-stage procedure.

OBJECTIVES: The conventional method for preventing web formation after anterior glottic web surgery is keel insertion. However, this presents risks of airway compromise and granulation tissue formation, which could necessitate tracheotomy in addition to a secondary procedure for keel removal. We introduce a novel, 1-stage endoscopic laser anterior commissurotomy for preventing anterior glottic web re-formation. METHODS: Twenty patients with glottic webs involving the anterior commissure were studied. The lesions were removed by transoral carbon dioxide laser microsurgery. In all patients, the

Stroboscopic assessment of vocal fold keratosis and glottic cancer.

Disruption of the normal viscoelastic properties of the superficial lamina propria (SLP) results in aberrant vocal fold vibration and mucosal wave propagation. Therefore, an investigation was performed to determine whether stroboscopy is a reliable method for 1) differentiating invasive glottic carcinoma from intraepithelial atypia or 2) determining the depth of cancer invasion. An analysis was done on the preoperative vocal fold vibration characteristics of 62 keratotic (intraepithelial, 45; cancer, 17) lesions that were subsequently resected by means of microlaryngoscopy. Histopathology and

Familial Sulcus Vergeture: Further Evidence for Congenital Origin of Type 2 Sulcus.

A 29-year-old otherwise healthy woman presented with a lifetime history of hoarseness because it had begun to interfere with her career. Examination of both the woman and her 60-year-old father revealed bilateral sulcus vergeture, without inflammation or lesions attributable to phonotrauma. The woman responded well to injection augmentation; the father declined treatment. Combined with existing descriptions of other family groupings, all with sulcus vergeture without signs of inflammation, clinical progression, and little or no apparent behavioral component, this report further suggests that s

Laryngeal injuries following endotracheal intubation in ENT surgery: predictive value of anatomical scores.

Endotracheal intubation has been associated with a threefold higher incidence of laryngopharyngeal complaints following anesthesia in comparison to laryngeal mask airway. Such complaints, including hoarseness and sore throat, have been reported in up to 90% of patients within 24 h of extubation. The purpose of this study was to determine which preoperatively documented clinical and anatomic parameters are predictive of laryngo-pharyngeal trauma resulting from elective endotracheal intubation. Fifty-three patients undergoing ENT procedures requiring general anesthesia with endotracheal intubati

Videostroboscopic and morphological aspects of voice disturbances in patients with larynx atrophy and coexisting hypopharynx cancer.

Vocal folds play a crucial role in voice production. The physiological vibrations of vocal folds depend on the unchanged multilayered structure of the vocal folds mucosa. Morphological changes of mucosa are the cause of voice quality disorders - dysphonia. The aim of this study was to determine the morphological base of dysphonia in patients with vocal folds atrophy. A group of 24 patients with larynx atrophy confirmed by endoscopic (VLS) and stroboscopic (VLSS) examination of the larynx was included in the study. The morphological assessment of the larynx mucosa was carried out with the use o

Health and voice quality in smokers: an exploratory investigation.

Thirty-two adults (20 smokers and 12 non-smokers) were examined to determine the effects of cigarette smoking on health (diseases and larynx histology), on fundamental frequency (regularity and jitter) and stress level. The examination consisted of nasovideostroboscopy analysis, history case, electrolaryngography assessment for different task performance and self-assessment of stress. Although not statistically different, results indicate that smokers in comparison to non-smokers show: 1) slightly more health problems; 2) histological larynx changes; 3) a higher level of stress; 4) a lower mea
