Non-pharmacological management of infant and young child procedural pain.

BACKGROUND: Infant acute pain and distress is commonplace. Infancy is a period of exponential development. Unrelieved pain and distress can have implications across the lifespan. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for infant and child (up to three years) acute pain, excluding breastmilk, sucrose, and music. Analyses accounted for infant age (preterm, neonate, older) and pain response (pain reactivity, pain-related regulation). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched CENTRAL in The Cochrane Library (2011, Issue 1), MEDLINE (1966 to April 2011), EMBASE (1980 to April

Assessment and treatment of abstinence in the infant of the drug-dependent mother.

To accomplish the assessment and treatment of abstinence in the infant of the drug dependent mother, a scoring system has been devised for use as a clinical and research tool. The score monitors the passively addicted infant in a more comprehensive and precise way than has previously been described, and permits us to be more objective in our clinical estimates of the abstinence syndrome. Further, this scoring system has been used by relating it to the dosage schedule of phenobarbital or paregoric as part of an ongoing research project designed to test the comparative usefulness of recommended

Malocclusion impairs cognitive behavior via AgRP signaling in adolescent mice.

INTRODUCTION: Occlusal disharmony induced by deteriorating oral health conditions, such as tooth loss and decreased masticatory muscle due to sarcopenia, is one of the causes of cognitive impairment. Chewing is an essential oral function for maintaining cognitive function not only in the elderly but also in young people. Malocclusion is an occlusal disharmony that commonly occurs in children. The connection between a decline in cognitive function and malocclusion in children has been shown with chronic mouth breathing, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and thumb/digit sucking habits. However,

Cardiofaciocutaneous Syndrome Type 4 due to a MAP2K2 Variant: Expanding the Phenotypic Spectrum With Feeding Dysfunction and Neurodevelopmental Involvement.

We report a female infant with cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome type 4 (CFC4), an ultra-rare RASopathy caused by a heterozygous MAP2K2 (c.619G>A, p.Glu207Lys) variant. From birth, she presented with neonatal hypotonia, respiratory distress, and feeding dysfunction characterized by absent sucking reflex, orofacial hypotonia, and sensory disturbances. Distinct dysmorphic features, including characteristic craniofacial anomalies and macroglossia, were noted. Cardiac evaluation revealed a patent foramen ovale and two small atrial septal defects. Neurologic manifestations included cyanotic apnea, dyst

Should I stay or should I go?: Physiological, metabolic and biochemical consequences of voluntary emersion upon aquatic hypoxia in the scaleless fish Galaxias maculatus.

Hypoxia represents a significant challenge to most fish, forcing the development of behavioural, physiological and biochemical adaptations to survive. It has been previously shown that inanga (Galaxias maculatus) display a complex behavioural repertoire to escape aquatic hypoxia, finishing with the fish voluntarily emerging from the water and aerially respiring. In the present study we evaluated the physiological, metabolic and biochemical consequences of both aquatic hypoxia and emersion in inanga. Inanga successfully tolerated up to 6 h of aquatic hypoxia or emersion. Initially, this involve

Distribution of slow muscle fiber of muscle spindle in postnatal rat masseter muscle.

We investigated the properties of the muscle spindle in the masseter muscle at an immunohistochemical level in rats fed for 6 weeks. Slow myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms were measured and intrafusal fibers in the muscle spindle were studied to determine the relationship between the superficial and deep regions of rat masseter muscle after alternated feeding pattern. However, muscle spindles were found in both regions, mainly in the deep region of the posterior superficial region of masseter muscle. The total number of the slow fiber in the intrafusal fiber and number of muscle spindle in th

Blood pressure responses to milk ejection in the young rat.

When young rats receive milk ejections from their mothers they exhibit abrupt 30-50% increases in blood pressure. In our first experiment, we recorded, via carotid cannulae, blood pressure and heart rate during natural nursing bouts. Blood pressure changes coincident with behaviorally defined milk ejections were twice as large as the changes associated with other behaviors observed. In addition, the increases in blood pressure during milk ejection were significantly greater when pups were separated from their mothers for 18-20 hours prior to testing. A second experiment showed that these respo

Beat the heat: Culex quinquefasciatus regulates its body temperature during blood feeding.

Mosquitoes are regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on earth. Because they are responsible for the spread of a wide range of both human and animal pathogens, research of the underlying mechanisms of their feeding behavior and physiology is critical. Among disease vector mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus, a known carrier of West Nile virus and Western Equine Encephalitis, remains relatively understudied. As blood-sucking insects, adaptations (either at the molecular or physiological level) while feeding on warm blood are crucial to their survival, as overheating can result in death du

Functional assessment of the vascular and translaminar systemicity of insecticides in a cucumber-cotton aphid model.

It is difficult to control insect pests with piercing-sucking mouthparts such as aphids due to their concealed feeding behavior and limited exposure to foliar-applied insecticides. Although systemic insecticides with internal translocation through plant tissues provide a practical alternative to contact-based strategies, they often suffer from uneven deposition and behavioral avoidance by pests. Furthermore, conventional assays used for investigating systemicity provide useful information on insecticide performance; however, their outcomes can reflect a combination of systemic translocation an

The prevalence of malocclusion is higher in schoolchildren with signs of hyperactivity.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder is a behavioral disorder characterized by a lack of focus, impulsive behavior, and or excessive activity. This research aimed to evaluate the association between signs of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and malocclusion in schoolchildren. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 633 children aged 7-12 years. The children were clinically examined for malocclusion using the Dental Aesthetic Index. The predominant breathing pattern was also determined. Parents answered a questionnaire addressing

Supporting oral feeding in fragile infants: an evidence-based method for quality bottle-feedings of preterm, ill, and fragile infants.

Successful oral feeding of preterm and other ill and fragile infants is an interactive process that requires (1) sensitive, ongoing assessment of an infant's physiology and behavior, (2) knowledgeable decisions that support immediate and long-term enjoyment of food, and (3) competent skill in feeding. Caregivers can support feeding success by using the infant's biological and behavioral channels of communication to inform their feeding decisions and actions. The Supporting Oral Feeding in Fragile Infants (SOFFI) Method is described here with text, algorithms, and reference guides. Two of the a

Preterm Infant Feeding: A Mechanistic Comparison between a Vacuum Triggered Novel Teat and Breastfeeding.

The goal for preterm infants is to achieve full oral feeds quickly and ultimately progress to full breastfeeding. Supplementary oral feeds are often given when the mother is not available to breastfeed. Bottles typically deliver milk in a different fashion compared to breastfeeding, which is thought to hamper transition to full breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to compare the sucking dynamics of preterm infants fed at the breast to feeding with an experimental novel teat (NT) designed to release milk only upon the application of vacuum. Simultaneous ultrasound imaging of the infant oral

Effects of providing water from a bucket or a nipple on the performance and behavior of calves fed ad libitum volumes of acidified milk replacer.

Little information is available on how much water ad libitum milk-fed calves consume during the milk-feeding stage and during weaning to solid feed. Further, no information exists on the effects on calf behavior and performance of different water delivery systems during these stages. Therefore, the objectives of this study were first, to examine the water intake of calves fed acidified milk replacer ad libitum during the milk-feeding and weaning stages, and second, to determine whether the method of water delivery affected water and feed intake and growth during these periods or oral behavior

Synthetic orocutaneous stimulation entrains preterm infants with feeding difficulties to suck.

BACKGROUND: Prematurity can disrupt the development of a specialized neural circuit known as suck central pattern generator (sCPG), which often leads to poor feeding skills. The extent to which suck can be entrained using a synthetically patterned orocutaneous input to promote its development in preterm infants who lack a functional suck is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a new motorized 'pulsating' pacifier capable of entraining the sCPG in tube-fed premature infants who lack a functional suck and exhibit feeding disorders. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 31 preterm infa

Follow-up study of functional and morphological malocclusion trait changes from 3 to 12 years of age.

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological and functional malocclusion trait changes in 3- to 12-year-old children and to determine whether such functional traits at the 3, 4, and 5 years of age correlated with malocclusion severity score at 12 years of age. Two hundred and sixty-seven children (132 boys, 135 girls) were randomly selected for a follow-up study from a previous cohort of 560 subjects. Functional and morphological traits were clinically assessed. Five functional malocclusion traits: mouth breathing, atypical swallowing, thumb, pacifier sucking, and bottle feeding were as
