The present study was undertaken to investigate the functional role of monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) in the ruminant large intestine. We investigated if stimulation of T-type Ca(2+) channels with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a donor of hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), could cause neuronal differentiation of NG108-15 cells. The aim of this study was to generate and characterize a thiolated carrageenan. Thiolated carrageenan (carrageenan-SH) was synthesized from kappa (κ)- and iota (ι)-carrageenan by bromine replacement of the hydroxyl moieties followed by substitution to thiol groups using thiourea. Death induced by oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) to embryonic CNS neuronal and neuroblastoma cells was investigated. Cell damage and viability were evaluated by LDH leakage and the MTT method, respectively.
