Extracapsular lumpectomy and SMAS flap for benign parotid tumours: an early outcome in a small number of cases on Frey's syndrome and facial nerve dysfunction.

Parotidectomy is the most common approach for benign salivary neoplasms. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyse no. 34 extracapsular lumpectomies (ELs) performed with superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flaps on 32 patients for benign parotid tumours. Based on the extent of the surgical defect the surgical resection was associated with sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle rotation flap in 8 patients, superficial temporal artery fascial flap (STAFF) in 2, and temporalis muscle rotation flap in 2. None of the patients affected by pleomorphic adenoma or Warthin's tumour

Sympathectomy for neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is defined as pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction in the nervous system. Some examples of this condition are phantom limb pain, post-stroke pain and complex regional pain syndrome type I (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and type II (causalgia). Treatment options include drugs, physical treatments, surgery and psychological interventions. The concept that many neuropathic pain syndromes, particularly RSD and causalgia are "sympathetically maintained pains" has historically led to attempts to temporarily or permanently interrupt the sympathetic

Long-term results of thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic sympathectomy is now the reference treatment for severe palmar hyperhidrosis, but this is offset by the occurrence of compensatory sweating. It has been studied in this series to improve the indications and information given to patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of 124 patients who were previously afflicted with bilateral thoracoscopic sympathectomy 6 years earlier was conducted. Patients were interviewed by postal questionnaire regarding the results and side effects. RESULTS: The series consisted of 89 females (72%) and 35 males and the mean age was 28 years

The Effectiveness of Sternocleidomastoid Flap Versus Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System Flap for the Prevention of Frey Syndrome and Facial Depressed Deformity in Parotid Surgery for Pleomorphic Adenoma.

The purpose of this study was to compare 2 types of reconstruction techniques: sternocleidomastoid (SCM) flap and superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) flap after partial parotidectomy (PP) for preventing Frey syndrome (FS) and concave facial depressed deformity. A total of 99 patients underwent PP for pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. The patients were divided in 2 groups according to the dimension of the tumor: tumors less than 3 cm (group A, 47 patients) and tumors greater than or equal to 3 cm (group B, 52 patients). The patients in the 2 groups were assigned to 3 subgroups:

Superficial Parotidectomy: Impact of Postoperative Drainage.

BACKGROUND: Use of suction drain after superficial parotidectomy (SP) is based on national consensus considered best practice, but there is no evidence on the effect of the treatment. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of drainage after SP by evaluating the rate of complications after SP in relation to the (ie, duration) of drainage and tumor size. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed involving data from all consecutive patients undergoing SP at the Ear, Nose, and Throat department, Regional Hospital West Jutland, Denmark, between January 1, 2011, and Decem

Superficial parotidectomy versus retrograde partial superficial parotidectomy in treating benign salivary gland tumor (pleomorphic adenoma).

PURPOSE: Of all benign salivary gland tumors of the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common. It accounts for 60% to 70% of all benign tumors of the parotid gland. This neoplasm arises in patients in the fourth to sixth decade of life, with a female predominance. The surgical excision of this lesion continues to be the subject of major debate. The goal is to avoid facial disability yet attain complete resection without perforation of the capsule/pseudocapsule. The purpose of our study is to compare 2 surgical techniques performed at the Ear, Nose, and Throat and Maxi

Modified superficial parotidectomy: preserving both the great auricular nerve and the parotid gland fascia.

OBJECTIVE: To reduce the incidence of sensory deficits and Frey's syndrome by modifying the traditional superficial parotidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: After raising the skin flap, the parotid gland fascia (PGF) was elevated to form a posterior pedicle fascial flap and then was replaced after the gland removal. The great auricular nerve (GAN) that runs within the PGF was not separated, so both the GAN and the PGF were preserved. Before this modification, the GAN and PGF were examined anatomically. The complication rates in the modified and control groups were compared. RESULTS: 1) The GAN, which ru

[The indications for and results of video thoracoscopic sympathectomy].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Thoracoscopic sympathectomy, for years an effective way to treat mainly palmar and axilla hyperhidrosis, experienced a revival since the application of the principles of minimally invasive surgery. We report the personal experiences of three surgeons with this technique, as well as patients' view of the outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1990 and November 1997, 73 procedures were performed in 43 patients (23 males, 20 females, mean age 38.1 years, range 15-82 years), and the outcome was prospectively studied. Palmar hyperhidrosis without axilla symptoms

A novel approach for benign parotid tumors: a dual-focused strategy on functional preservation and aesthetics.

OBJECTIVE: Benign tumors of the parotid gland are the most common salivary gland diseases, Conventional parotid surgery often leads to various complications that severely affect the postoperative quality of life of patients. METHODS: This study included 400 patients with clinically benign tumors in the tail of the parotid gland, divided into two groups: one group received the classical surgical method, and the other group received the new surgical method.Through postoperative follow-up, the differences in postoperative quality of life between the two groups were compared by recording the inci

Logistic regression analysis of risk factors for post-operative morbidities in parotidectomy: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we reviewed the post-operative complications in parotidectomy and its association with various patient, tumour and surgical factors. METHODS: All parotidectomies performed in our regional unit between 2013 to 2020 were identified. Electronic medical record and clinic letters were reviewed for any post-operative complications. A logistical regression model was applied on data collected on twelve patient factors, three tumour factors and four surgical factors. RESULTS: 379 cases of parotidectomy were identified in the eight-year study period. 55% (n = 210) were docume
