Impact of lab-based drug checking services on syringe service program engagement in Maryland, USA.

PURPOSE: The introduction of synthetic substances into the unregulated drug supply has driven a surge in overdose deaths, posing significant public health challenges in timely substance identification, engagement with people who use drugs (PWUD), and access to treatment. Maryland's rapid analysis of drugs (RAD) program, piloted through syringe service programs (SSPs), provides a proactive harm reduction strategy by integrating mail-in, laboratory based drug checking with broader public health services to enhance surveillance and improve engagement with PWUD. We aim to investigate the associati

Optimal provision of opioid agonist therapy (OAT) and needle and syringe programmes (NSP): a realist evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors that hinder or support engagement with Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) and Needle and Syringe Provision (NSP) is essential for increasing retention and reducing drug-related harm. This study comprised a multimethod realist evaluation to develop a theory of the factors influencing service provision, focusing on access, engagement, retention, and successful exit (clients outcome met) from services. DESIGN: Phase 1 involved an online survey of UK drug and alcohol service commissioners, focus groups with interest holders, and a qualitative systematic review to b

Syringic Acid-Loaded Emulsomes as a Neuroprotective Delivery System: Formulation Optimization and In-Vivo Pharmacokinetic Evaluation.

Syringic acid (SA) demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Unfortunately, its clinical applicability is limited by low solubility and low bioavailability. SA-loaded emulsomes were developed to overcome these limitations. The emulsomes were prepared using thin-film hydration method and optimized by a Central Composite Design. Three independent variables were studied: the solid lipid-to-phosphatidylcholine ratio, drug amount, and solid lipid type (trilaurin or tripalmitin). The measured responses were entrapment efficiency (EE%), particle size (PS

New Hybrid Benzothiazole Derivatives from Gallic and Syringic Acid as a Potential Multifunctional Skin Disease.

Multifunctional drugs represent an emerging strategy for treating complex skin disorders and melanoma. A series of benzothiazole-based hybrids incorporating gallic and syringic acid moieties was synthesized and evaluated as multifunctional agents for skin-related applications. Six hydrazone (GAHYDR1-3) and acyl-hydrazone (GACIN1-3) derivatives were obtained and fully characterized. Hydroxylated compounds showed the strongest antioxidant activity, with GAHYDR1 and GACIN1 displaying low DPPH IC50 values and high FRAP reducing power. UV-Vis studies revealed strong UVA-UVB absorption, with molar e

Effects of syringic acid on the indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model in rats: in vivo and in silico study.

In this study, the potential protective effects of syringic acid (SA) on gastric tissue were investigated in an indomethacin (INDO)-induced gastric ulcer model. A total of 84 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into seven groups. In the in vivo experiments, rats were administered SA at doses of 5, 50, and 100 mg/kg and omeprazole (OMP) at a dose of 5 mg/kg intragastrically (i.g.) for 14 days, and indomethacin (100 mg/kg, i.g.) was administered on the final day. Following INDO administration, the rats were sacrificed under anesthesia, and gastric tissues were carefully excised for fu

Endophthalmitis Caused by α-Streptococcal Following Intravitreal Ranibizumab Biosimilar Administration Using a Prefilled Syringe.

Endophthalmitis continues to represent a vision-threatening complication of intravitreal injection. Herein, we present a rare case of endophthalmitis caused by α-streptococcal following intravitreal ranibizumab biosimilar administration using a prefilled syringe. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our clinic and diagnosed with acute endophthalmitis in the left eye, following intravitreal administration of a ranibizumab biosimilar delivered via a prefilled syringe. A hypopyon was noted at a height of 3 mm, and the fundus examination of the left eye was obscured by corneal edema. The best-corre

Sterile syringe availability in Georgia pharmacies remained rare, despite policy change permitting sales.

BACKGROUND: Numerous states, including Georgia in April 2019, have advanced policies designed to increase availability of sterile syringes in pharmacies for people who inject drugs (PWID); however, the extent to which pharmacies are willing to sell syringes to PWID is unclear. We examine sterile syringes sales practices in Georgia pharmacies to PWID following a recent policy change and pharmacists' cited reasons for these practices. METHODS: We conducted a telephone survey from October 2020 through May 2021 of one pharmacist (staff or manager) per pharmacy in a sample of Georgia retail pharma

Assessing direct transfusion feasibility with syringe-based collection of whole blood from universal donors.

BACKGROUND: The anticipated multidomain operations of future battlefields necessitates minimalistic medical strategies for treatment of combat wounded. Direct transfusion, involving the administration of blood directly from a donor to a recipient, may be a solution for treating hemorrhagic shock patients in an austere environment where the tools to execute clinical practice guidelines are unavailable. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Six participants were enrolled in this observational pilot study. Blood was drawn through medical tubing using a 60 mL syringe and pushed through a second medical tubin

Impact of an air bubble within the syringe on test results obtained with a modern blood gas analyzer.

BACKGROUND: Minimizing air aspiration by carefully filling blood gas syringes is crucial to prevent air contamination from causing undesirable variations in gasses and other molecules. While some previous studies investigated this aspect, these are now outdated and only analyzed a limited number of blood gas parameters. Thus, we investigated the effects air contamination in the syringe using a modern blood gas analyzer. METHODS: We sampled venous blood from 17 laboratory workers (mean age: 46±11 years; 10 women), filling two consecutive blood gas syringes. The first was filled exactly to its

A Case of Aquagenic Syringeal Acrokeratoderma in a Male Patient Undergoing Treatment With an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor.

Aquagenic syringeal acrokeratoderma (ASA) is a rare dermatological condition characterized by the transient appearance of edematous, white, translucent papules on the palms following water exposure. While the condition is most commonly associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) and predominantly affects young women, this report presents a unique case in a 24-year-old man without a history of cystic fibrosis. The patient reported a 10-month history of painful, pruritic eruptions on the hands following exposure to water. Symptoms resolved within an hour post-exposure but were persistent and increasing

Syringic acid attenuates acute lung injury by modulating macrophage polarization in LPS-induced mice.

BACKGROUND: Acute lung injury (ALI) is a continuum of lung changes caused by multiple lung injuries, characterized by a syndrome of uncontrolled systemic inflammation that often leads to significant morbidity and death. Anti-inflammatory is one of its treatment methods, but there is no safe and available drug therapy. Syringic acid (SA) is a natural organic compound commonly found in a variety of plants, especially in certain woody plants and fruits. In modern pharmacological studies, SA has anti-inflammatory effects and therefore may be a potentially safe and available compound for the treatm

Characteristics and context of fentanyl test strip use among syringe service clients in southern Wisconsin.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl adulteration of illicit drugs is a major driver of opioid-involved overdose in the USA. Fentanyl test strips are increasingly used by people who use drugs to check for fentanyl. However, little is known about factors that influence test strip use in this population. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study employing semi-structured open-ended interviews (n = 29) and a structured survey (n = 341), we examined characteristics associated with test strip use, characteristics of test strip use, and situational, logistical and psychosocial factors influencing test strip use. Application of machine learning algorithms for localized syringe services program policy implementation - Florida, 2017.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at an amplified vulnerability for experiencing a multitude of harms related to their substance use, including viral (e.g. HIV, Hepatitis C) and bacterial infections (e.g. endocarditis). Implementation of evidence-based interventions, such as syringe services programs (SSPs), remains imperative, particularly in locations at an increased risk of HIV outbreaks. This study aims to identify communities in Florida that are high-priority locations for SSP implementation by examining state-level data related to the substance use and overdose crises. METH

Effects of Syringic Acid on Apoptosis, Inflammation, and AKT/mTOR Signaling Pathway in Gastric Cancer Cells.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancer and deadly disease worldwide. Despite substantial advances made in the treatment of gastric cancer, existing therapies still encounter bottlenecks. Chemotherapy, for instance, could lead to serious side effects, high drug resistance and treatment failure. Phytochemical-derived compounds from plants offer novel strategies as potent drug molecules in cancer therapy. Given the low toxicity and higher tolerance rate of naturally occurring compounds, the present study evaluated the effects of syringic acid on cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondr

Comparison of Efficacy Between Paladai and Syringe Feeding in Stable Preterm Neonates-A Randomized Control Trial.

Background: Feeding abilities of preterm neonates differ based on their gestational and postnatal maturity. Maturity of sucking pattern and improved coordination between sucking and swallowing and breathing, which is seen in babies with a gestation of 32 weeks onward, makes trial of oral feeds more successful in these babies. The oral feeds can be given either with a cup and spoon or a paladai. However, we observed that the milk spilt during feeding was an issue due to a wider spout of the paladai. Feeding through syringe is practiced in many neonatal units. However, there is a lack of scienti
