Copy number analysis of 413 isolated talipes equinovarus patients suggests role for transcriptional regulators of early limb development.

Talipes equinovarus is one of the most common congenital musculoskeletal anomalies and has a worldwide incidence of 1 in 1000 births. A genetic predisposition to talipes equinovarus is evidenced by the high concordance rate in twin studies and the increased risk to first-degree relatives. Despite the frequency of isolated talipes equinovarus and the strong evidence of a genetic basis for the disorder, few causative genes have been identified. To identify rare and/or recurrent copy number variants, we performed a genome-wide screen for deletions and duplications in 413 isolated talipes equinova

Identification of a novel LMX1B nonsense variant associated with congenital talipes equinovarus by prenatal exome sequencing: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a rotational foot deformity that affects muscles, bones, connective tissue, and vascular or neurological tissues. The etiology of CTEV is complex and unclear, involving genetic and environmental factors. Nail-patella syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by variants of the LIM homeobox transcription factor 1 beta gene (LMX1B, OMIM:602575). LMX1B plays a key role in the development of dorsal limb structures, the kidneys, and the eyes, and variants in this gene may manifest as hypoplastic or absent patella, dystrophic nails, and el

Gene Environment Interactions Between the COL9A1 Gene and Maternal Drinking of Alcohol Contribute to the Risk of Congenital Talipes Equinovarus.

Background: Previous studies have indicated that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV). The COL9A1 gene encodes one of the three alpha chains of type IX collagen, which is a key collagen component of hyaline cartilage. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of COL9A1 gene polymorphisms on susceptibility to CTEV in the Han Chinese population. Methods: A total of 2205 unrelated subjects comprising 692 CTEV patients and 1513 healthy controls were recruited. Demographic and characteristic information was collected, including maternal

Is congenital talipes equinovarus a risk factor for pathological dysplasia of the hip? : a 21-year prospective, longitudinal observational study.

There is controversy whether congenital foot abnormalities are true risk factors for pathological dysplasia of the hip. Previous United Kingdom screening guidelines considered congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) to be a risk factor for hip dysplasia, but present guidelines do not. We assessed the potential relationship between pathological dysplasia of the hip and fixed idiopathic CTEV. We present a single-centre 21-year prospective longitudinal observational study. All fixed idiopathic CTEV cases were classified (Harrold and Walker Types 1 to 3) and the hips clinically and sonographically a

Functional, clinical, and radiological outcomes of split anterior tibial tendon transfers in patients with sequelae of congenital talipes equinovarus.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of Split Tibialis Anterior Tendon Transfer (Split TATT) in treating residual idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) deformities. METHODS: 15 patients (20 feet) with CTEV, with a mean age of 6.4 ± 3.2 years, initially treated with Ponseti casting, underwent Split TATT. Clinical and radiological evaluations, including Diméglio and Garceau scores, dorsiflexion, and X-ray measurements, were conducted preoperatively and post-operatively at a minimum 2-year follow-up. RESULTS: Significant improvements were observed

Spina bifida cystica and severe congenital bilateral talipes equinovarus in one twin of a monoamniotic pair: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida and congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) are common congenital malformations which may occur together and increase morbidity. Monozygous twins are particularly at risk of these malformations and discordance in one type of malformation is typical. The occurrence of both spina bifida and CTEV in one twin of a monozygotic pair is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22 year-old Cameroonian primigravida at 36 weeks of a twin gestation was received in our district hospital at the expulsive phase of labour on a background of sub-optimal antenatal care. A caesarean section indicated

[Ossification of the Achilles tendon after surgery of talipes equinus in childhood and condition following Köhler II (author's transl)].

In a 48-year old man, ossification was seen in the right achilles tendon which was to be interpreted as due to surgical extension of tendon in childhood following operation of talipes equinus. Only few reports have been published in literature, but in these, the x-ray findings were largely identical, and in all cases except one, injuries of the tendon or operations had preceded the condition. Ossification is associated with mild complaints only. It presents a typical pattern of x-ray findings distinguishing it from tendon ossifications or calcifications of other origin.

Anterior Distal Tibial Guided Growth for recurrent equinus deformity in idiopathic Congenital Talipes Equinovarus treated with the Ponseti method.

INTRODUCTION: Distal Anterior Tibial Guided Growth has been shown to be useful to correct recurrent equinus deformity after open surgical release for Congenital Talipes Equinovarus. This has not been evaluated in a recurrence after use of the Ponseti method, where soft tissue releases are currently understood as the mainstay of treatment. METHODS: Patients with recurrence of equinus component of CTEV, who underwent DATGG with at least 6-month follow-up were identified retrospectively. The criteria for performing this procedure were (1) equinus not correctable to neutral passively (2) the feel

Attaining a British consensus statement on managing idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) through a Delphi process: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is the most common congenital limb deformity. Non-operative intervention using the Ponseti method has shown to be superior to soft tissue release and has become the gold standard for first-line treatment. However, numerous deviations from the Ponseti protocol are still reported following incomplete correction or deformity relapse. Significant variation in treatment protocols and management is evident in the literature. Reducing geographical treatment variation has been identified as one of The James Lind Alliance priorities in chil

Talipes Equinus Deformity Caused by Fibrous Gastrocnemius Muscle Contracture After Direct Contusion in Football Players: Report of Two Cases.

Two main causes of gastrocnemius contracture have been considered: 1) congenital deformities in pediatric patients, such as limb-length discrepancy, cerebral palsy, flatfoot, and clubfoot; and 2) secondary conditions such as immobilization for trauma or a nonfunctional limb. Talipes equinus deformity caused by fibrous gastrocnemius contracture after a direct muscle contusion is extremely rare. We describe 2 cases of talipes equinus deformity caused by fibrous gastrocnemius muscle contracture after a direct contusion in football players. Both of the players had a talipes equinus deformity with

A Novel Surgical Technique for the First Case of Neglected Bilateral Severe Congenital Genu Recurvatum Combined with Bilateral Talipes Equinocavovarus.

Congenital genu recurvatum (CGR) is a rare congenital knee deformity that can be diagnosed pre- or postnatally. Most CGR cases are treated during infancy by manipulation and serial casting or splinting. Only a few neglected cases of CGR in adults with the necessity of surgical treatment have been reported. This study presents the first case of neglected bilateral severe CGR combined with bilateral talipes equinocavovarus (BTE) in a 25-year-old woman. This case is unique, because BTE is secondary to CGR with persistent progression into adulthood. The patient underwent two-stage surgeries with 1
