Attention deficit in Alzheimer's disease is not simulated by an anticholinergic/antihistaminergic drug and is distinct from deficits in healthy aging.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate attention deficit in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its relationship to attention deficits associated with aging and with medications altering alertness. METHODS: Ten patients with probable AD, 10 healthy old controls, and 15 young controls performed a covert orienting of spatial attention task. Young controls performed the task an additional time after ingestion of diphenhydramine 1 mg/kg. Reaction times were obtained following valid, neutral, and invalid cues. RESULTS: In all groups, the reaction times were shortest for the validly cued stimuli and longest for the inva

Empirical support for recognizing pathological buying/shopping as a mental disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To address the question of whether pathological buying/shopping differs from both risky and non-problematic buying/shopping. METHOD: Post-hoc analysis of data collected within the Addiction Research Unit FOR2974. Three predefined groups, as determined by face-to-face diagnostic interviews, were compared: with pathological (pBSh, n = 62), risky (rBSh, n = 62), and non-problematic (control group, CG, n = 117) buying/shopping. Questionnaires were used to assess symptom severity (according to ICD-11 criteria for disorders due to addictive behaviors), functional impairment, craving, exp

Home cage-based insights into motor learning and strategy adaptation in a Huntington disease mouse model.

Huntington disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Assessing early motor skill deficits in HD mouse models is challenging with traditional behavioral tasks. This study uses a home cage-based lever-pulling task, PiPaw2.0, to evaluate motor learning in 6-7 months-old zQ175 knock-in HD mice in a more naturalistic environment. In this task, mice learn to pull a lever for a water reward, with the requirement to hold the lever within a specific goal range for a required hold time. As the mi

Adaptive rightward gaze shifts support configural object recognition during perceptual challenge.

We investigated gaze lateralization during object and face recognition using stimuli containing only low spatial frequency information. Using Dots stimuli that isolate configural structure while allowing precise control of sensory evidence, we recorded eye movements during free-viewing and time-restricted exploration across four experiments. Gaze shifted reliably toward the right visual hemifield as perceptual demands increased, appearing as reduced leftward bias, or clear rightward lateralization. This shift was strengthened by lower visibility, intrinsic ambiguity, and higher task demands. I

Exploring early-stage orienting behavior using an eye tracker for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder classification.

Exploring early-stage orienting behavior is essential for elucidating the behavioral mechanisms underlying attentional shifts in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, traditional tasks lacking eye-tracking data often obscure these mechanisms. This study investigates low-level attentional shifting in ADHD using a simplified gaze-cueing task and explores classification markers via eye movement. Eye-tracking data were analyzed from 27 typically developing children and 19 children diagnosed with ADHD. We constructed a logistic regression model for classification purposes. Eye m

Modified Egocentric Viewpoint for Softer Seated Experience in Virtual Reality.

Users in a prolonged experience of virtual reality adopt a sitting position according to their task, as they do in the real world. However, inconsistencies in the haptic feedback from a chair they sit on in the real world and that which is expected in the virtual world decrease the feeling of presence. We aimed to change the perceived haptic features of a chair by shifting the position and angle of the users' viewpoints in the virtual reality environment. The targeted features in this study were seat softness and backrest flexibility. To enhance the seat softness, we shifted the virtual viewpo

Executive functioning in anorexia nervosa patients and their unaffected relatives.

Formal genetic studies suggested a substantial genetic influence for anorexia nervosa (AN), but currently results are inconsistent. The use of the neurocognitive endophenotype approach may facilitate our understanding of the AN pathophysiology. We investigated decision-making, set-shifting and planning in AN patients (n=29) and their unaffected relatives (n=29) compared to healthy probands (n=29) and their relatives (n=29). The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), the Tower of Hanoi (ToH) and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) were administered. Concordance rates and heritability indices were also ca

Effects of preterm experience on the developing visual system: a longitudinal study of shifts of attention and gaze in early infancy.

Several studies on visual development support the notion that healthy, low-risk preterm infants benefit from their early exposure to the visual world. It has been suggested, however, that mainly early developing sensory and motor processes are enhanced as a result of visual experience and early exercise, whereas later maturing processes might not. This study investigates whether preterm infants' visual and attentional development is accelerated as a consequence of their early visual experience and whether early and later maturing processes are affected differently. Preterm and full-term infant

Coordinated Information Generation and Mental Flexibility: Large-Scale Network Disruption in Children with Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes deficits in social cognition, communication, and executive function. Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that ASD disrupts the structural and functional organization of brain networks and, presumably, how they generate information. Here, we relate deficits in an aspect of cognitive control to network-level disturbances in information processing. We recorded magnetoencephalography while children with ASD and typically developing controls performed a set-shifting task designed to test mental flexibility. We used multiscale entropy (MSE) to estimate the rat

Comprehension of the communicative intent behind pointing and gazing gestures by young children with Williams syndrome or Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors examined the ability of preschoolers with Williams syndrome (WS) or Down syndrome (DS) to infer communicative intent as expressed through gestures (pointing and eye-gaze shift). METHOD: Participants were given a communicative or noncommunicative cue involving pointing or gaze shifting in the context of a hiding game. Each child completed 4 conditions formed by crossing Communicative Style (communicative vs. noncommunicative) and Gesture (point vs. gaze shift). RESULTS: At the group level, children in both groups located the toy significantly more often tha

Integrated Care Models for Hepatitis C: Lessons From Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Hepatitis C continues to pose a significant global health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where access to diagnosis and treatment remains limited. This perspective explores how integrated care models, featuring decentralization, task-shifting, and simplified protocols, can accelerate hepatitis C elimination. Drawing on case studies from Egypt, Rwanda, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Nigeria, we highlight key enablers such as political commitment, infrastructure integration, and public engagement. These examples demonstrate that scalable, cost-effective strategies can achieve

Factors influencing dynamic prioritization during dual-task walking in healthy young adults.

Appropriate prioritization during dual-task walking is necessary to achieve task goals and maintain walking stability. We examined the effects of increased walking task difficulty on dual-task walking prioritization in healthy young adults. Walking under simple usual-base conditions was similar between equal-focus and cognitive-focus instructions, but these differed from walking-focus instructions, consistent with cognitive task prioritization. In contrast, narrow-base walking was similar between equal-focus and walking-focus instructions, but these differed from cognitive-focus instructions.

fMRI reveals brainstem and cortical networks contribute to the instruction-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses.

Reliable noninvasive measurement of human brainstem activity during motor control remains challenging due to small anatomical structures and physiological noise, yet it is essential for understanding descending contributions to rapid feedback control. We used brainstem-optimized whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether task-dependent modulation of stretch-evoked motor responses in humans is associated with changes in activation within reticulospinal regions of the human brainstem. Acceptability and feasibility of using non-specialist health workers to deliver mental health care: stakeholder perceptions from the PRIME district sites in Ethiopia, India, Nepal, South Africa, and Uganda.

Three-quarters of the global mental health burden exists in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), yet the lack of mental health services in resource-poor settings is striking. Task-sharing (also, task-shifting), where mental health care is provided by non-specialists, has been proposed to improve access to mental health care in LMICs. This multi-site qualitative study investigates the acceptability and feasibility of task-sharing mental health care in LMICs by examining perceptions of primary care service providers (physicians, nurses, and community health workers), community members, and

Effect of acute alcohol consumption in a novel rodent model of decision-making.

AIMS: We sought to explore how acute alcohol exposure alters decision-making in rats performing an approach-avoid decision-making task. Increasing concentrations of alcohol were mixed with decreasing concentrations of sucrose to mimic mixed/sweetened alcoholic beverages. METHODS: Rats were trained on an apparatus in which different concentrations of sucrose were available in four different corners of the arena. During daily sessions, a tone signaled each trial start, followed by illumination (15 lux, blue LEDs) of a single corner port, indicating the potential availability of sucrose at that

Opioid misuse detection from cognitive and physiological data with temporal fusion deep learning.

INTRODUCTION: Machine learning may enable detection of opioid misuse to prevent opioid-related risks including overdose and opioid use disorder. METHODS: Here, we collected 9238 datapoints from on-body sensors and cognitive tasks in a sample of 169 patients who were prescribed opioid analgesics to manage chronic pain. We categorized patients into one of two groups using the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM): those showing signs of opioid misuse (MISUSE+, n = 116) and those without signs of opioid misuse (MISUSE-, n = 53). Heart rate variability and respiration rate were assessed while part

Complex assessment of distinct cognitive impairments following ouabain injection into the rat dorsoloateral striatum.

A stroke in humans may induce focal injury to the brain tissue resulting in various disabilities. Although motor deficits are the most discernible, cognitive impairments seem to be crucial for patients mental well-being. The current lack of effective treatments encourages scientists and clinicians to develop novel approaches. Before applying them in clinic, testing for safety and effectiveness in non-human models is necessary. Such animal model should include significant cognitive impairments resulting from brain lesion. We used ouabain stereotactic injection into the right dorsolateral striat
