The temporal bone contains important sensory and neural structures that may be damaged in patients who experience craniofacial trauma. The most serious complications of temporal bone trauma include facial nerve paralysis, cerebrospinal fluid leak, and hearing loss. Injury to the temporal bone often presents with subtle signs and symptoms, such as otorrhea, facial palsy, and hemotympanum. A high index of suspicion and a thorough knowledge of how to diagnose injury to the temporal bone are paramount in treating patients who present to the emergency room with craniofacial trauma. To compensate for the loss of tissue after transferring the temporalis muscle, it is advisable to fill the temporalis fossa for aesthetic reasons. In so doing, we have used IONOS bone cement to augment the fossa after muscle transfers. Twelve procedures have been performed within the past 3 years. The average follow-up time has been 23 months. Surgery was required in 6 cases following delayed reconstruction to rehabilitate the paralyzed face after loss of facial nerve function, four times to stabilize a duraplasty at the skull base and twice for aesthetic facial augmentation. A prefabricated I

CT examinations of temporal bones were performed in 31 deaf patients from qualify diagnostic stage prepared for cochlear implants. Essential for surgical treatment anatomic details were estimated, especially canalis spiralis cochleae was paid to attention. In our group, 8 patients had some CT changes (abnormal findings) which corresponded to different stages of obliteration the cochlea. The majority of patients lost the hearing because of meningitis. In 6 implanted patients CT scan was compared with surgical findings. During the operation 1 patient with patent cochlea on CT scan had partially

Cogan's syndrome (CS) presents typical and atypical types. Typically, there are episodes of nonsyphilitic keratitis and audiovestibular dysfunction. Atypically, there are inflammatory changes in other eye structures and other organ systems, particularly the cardiovascular system. The temporal bone pathology in a case of CS shows changes that are similar to those observed in other autoimmune disorders associated with audiovestibular dysfunction. The following pathologic features characterize autoimmune inner ear disease: 1. acute labyrinthitis resulting in atrophy of inner ear tissues including

Cholesterol cyst (or granuloma) of the temporal bone, a recognized clinical entity distinct from cholesteatoma, is more common than previously thought. Apparently it is caused by obstruction of previously pneumatized temporal bone air cells. Surgical cure is achieved by drainage and reestablishment of normal pneumatization. This paper reviews 14 cholesterol cysts of the temporal bone, emphasizing the importance of preoperative imaging and surgical approach. Use of magnetic resonance imaging differentiates cholesterol cysts from cholesteatoma or other neoplasms. Computed tomography delineates t

The changes in the facial nerve at autopsy are described in a case in which there had been an acute onset of lower motor neurone facial paralysis, with a clinical diagnosis of Bell's palsy, 11 days before death. There was congestion and infiltration of the nerve in the internal auditory meatus and proximal fallopian canal by lymphocytes. Features indicating compression of the nerve in the proximal part of the fallopian canal were seen in the presence of congestion and osteoclastic resorption of the bone surrounding the proximal fallopian canal. Demyelination was present in the tympanic part of

An 80-year-old man was seen in the clinic with a two month history of pain, bleeding and deafness in his left ear; accompanied by a left facial palsy. Six months earlier, anaplastic carcinoma of the bladder had been diagnosed and treated with radiotherapy. On examination there was a mass in his left external auditory canal and VII, VIII, IX and X left cranial nerve palsies. Histology of a biopsy was identical with his original bladder tumour. He received a course of palliative radiotherapy but died shortly after. Post-mortem demonstrated the left temporal bone metastasis extending into the mid

Out of 2,888 blunt head injuries that were treated at the Hermann Hospital Trauma Center of the University of Texas at Houston, only 123 temporal bone fractures were diagnosed in 110 patients. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed with high resolution computerized tomography of the temporal bones. Three main categories of fractures were identified: oblique in 74%, longitudinal in 13% and transverse in 13%. The clinical manifestations included hemotympanum in 83%, cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea in 21% and Battle's sign in 10.6%. One third of the patients had conductive hearing loss, 1/2 had mixed

Jugulotympanic glomus tumors have been called many things, but "paraganglioma of the temporal bone" is perhaps a more suitable term. This tumor is generally described as benign with a predilection for middle-aged women. Herein we report the case of an 11-month-old female infant with this condition. The extensiveness of the tumor with intracranial involvement at presentation suggests that the lesion might have been present for some time and raises the question of it being congenital in origin. We emphasize the overall importance of including paraganglioma of the temporal bone in the differentia

The principal features of the otopalatodigital syndrome are hearing loss, cleft palate, and skeletal dysplasia of the hands and feet. The right temporal bone was acquired from a boy with this syndrome who died at the age of 2 1/2 years. Behavioral audiometry had indicated a conductive hearing loss, with probable near-normal sensorineural function; brainstem evoked response audiometry indicated a mild sensorineural hearing loss. Histologic studies of the temporal bone revealed dysmorphic features in both the middle ear and the bony labyrinth. The ossicles were deformed, the stapes was fixed, an

A retrospective analysis of 29 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the external and middle ear and 15 cases of glomus jugulare tumors of the middle ear was performed to evaluate the incidence of osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone following surgery and/or radiotherapy. Osteoradionecrosis occurred in 42% (8/19) of cases of squamous cell carcinoma which were treated with radical mastoidectomy, lateral or subtotal temporal bone resection leaving an open cavity and followed by an average of 5,840 rad postoperatively. No osteoradionecrosis, wound breakdown or otorrhea occurred in another group

Using serially sectioned human temporal bones, endolymphatic volumes of utriculus and sacculus were measured with the aid of a computer. The mean of the utricular volume was 8.187 mm3, and the saccular volume, 2.096 mm3. The former was 3.9 X the latter. The surface area of the macula utriculi was 3.271 mm2, and the macula sacculi was 2.188 mm2. The former was 1.5 X the latter. The study using pathologic temporal bones (Meniere's disease, otosclerosis, and otitis media chronica) showed that the utricular volume could indeed increase, and the saccular membrane was found to be more fragile than t

Ectopic bone in the scala tympani is characteristic of cochlear otosclerosis and meningitis, which are the two most frequent etiologies of deafness in cochlear implant patients. The ectopic bone in a multiple-electrode implanted bone is probably caused by disease (syphilis) rather than by the electrode or electrical stimulation. The sensory elements being stimulated by intracochlear electrodes probably are the ganglion cells.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma of the temporal bone and middle ear is a rare but aggressive pediatric malignancy that often mimics chronic otitis media, resulting in delayed diagnosis and advanced disease at presentation.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, staging, management strategies, and outcomes of pediatric temporal bone rhabdomyosarcoma.
METHODS: A review was conducted using Embase (Ovid), MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect databases. Articles published between 2000 and 2025 were screened. Inclusion criteria compr

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness is a common disease. However, approximately 10-40% of patients were diagnosed unknown dizziness even though general, neurological, and otological examinations were performed. The aim of this otopathological study was to investigate the histopathology of the peripheral vestibular system of patients who suffered from undiagnosed dizziness.
METHODS: Eighteen temporal bone specimens from 9 patients with undiagnosed dizziness and 20 temporal bone specimens from age-matched 10 normal controls were selected. Cases with a history of dizziness and vertigo caused by particular p

Neurenteric cysts are rare, developmental malformations mainly found in the spinal canal. The authors report on a 29-year-old woman who presented with congenital left-sided hearing loss and a 9 days history of left ear pain and facial weakness (House-Brackmann IV). Radiological examination revealed a complex 7 mm cystic structure involving the petrous and mastoid portions of the left temporal bone. Intraoperatively, a red-brown multicystic mass was discovered and excised completely. Histologic findings showed simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells and bilayers of submucosal musculature,

OBJECTIVE: Acquired encephaloceles of the temporal bone may be traumatic, spontaneous, or from chronic ear disease or previous surgery. Iatrogenic encephaloceles arise in the setting of previous mastoidectomy and traditionally involve both bony dehiscence and dural injury. We aim to classify and analyze the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and treatment options for patients with iatrogenic tegmen defects and encephaloceles of the temporal bone.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Single tertiary academic center.
PATIENTS: Subjects with iatrogenic tegmen defects and enceph
