Developing content for a mHealth intervention to promote postpartum retention in prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission programs and early infant diagnosis of HIV: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal attendance at postnatal clinic visits and timely diagnosis of infant HIV infection are important steps for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. We aimed to use theory-informed methods to develop text messages targeted at facilitating these steps. METHODS: We conducted five focus group discussions with health workers and women attending antenatal, postnatal, and PMTCT clinics to explore aspects of women's engagement in postnatal HIV care and infant testing. Discussion topics were informed by constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and prior empiri

Young People's Views and Experiences of a Mobile Phone Texting Intervention to Promote Safer Sex Behavior.

BACKGROUND: The risk of poor sexual health, including unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), is greatest amongst young people. Innovative and acceptable interventions to improve sexual health are required. Mobile phone text messaging (short message service, SMS) interventions have the potential to reach large numbers of people at relatively low cost, but greater understanding is needed on how these interventions should be developed and how they work. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to explore young people's views of and experiences with a mobile phone text messag

Novel Implementation Strategy to Electronically Screen and Signpost Patients to Health Behavior Apps: Mixed Methods Implementation Study (OptiMine Study).

BACKGROUND: Behavior change apps have the potential to provide individual support on a population scale at low cost, but they face numerous barriers to implementation. Electronic health records (EHRs) in acute care hospitals provide a valuable resource for identifying patients at risk, who may benefit from behavior change apps. A novel, emerging implementation strategy is to use digital technologies not only for providing support to help-seeking individuals but also for signposting patients at risk to support services (also called proactive referral in the United States). OBJECTIVE: The OptiM

How Risky is Online Sexting by Minors?

What proportion of minors who engage in sexting find themselves involved in an episode of image abuse? The data come from a US nationally representative sample of 2639 respondents aged 18-28 reporting about experiences before the age of 18, of whom 23% had engaged in sexting as minors. Among those who sexted the rate of image abuse was 37%, a risk ratio of 13.2 compared to those who did not engage in sexting. For females who sexted the victimization rate was particularly high, but sexting increased risk for females and males. Among the minors who only sexted occasionally (vs those who sexted f

Barriers and facilitators to physical activity participation in adults living with type 1 diabetes: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map barriers to and facilitators of physical activity in adults living with type 1 diabetes. INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is crucial to the day-to-day management of type 1 diabetes and in the prevention of diabetes-related complications. Despite these benefits, people living with type 1 diabetes have higher inactivity rates than those in the general population. Identifying barriers and facilitators to physical activity, specific to the type 1 diabetes population, may help explain this discrepancy. INCLUSION CRITERIA: This

Using a Textual Prompt to Teach Multiword Requesting to Two Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by social and communication impairment, but some children appear to have relative strength in areas such as reading printed words. The present study involved two children with limited expressive communication skills, but relatively stronger reading ability. Based on this existing strength, we evaluated a textual prompting procedure for teaching the children to produce multiword spoken requests. The effect of providing textual prompts on production of multiword requests was evaluated in an ABAB design. The results showed that multiword requests increase

Using SMS Texting for Adverse Drug Reaction Surveillance: Evaluation of New Medication Prescriptions in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and their timely recognition are major patient safety concerns. Earlier detection of ADRs can improve outcomes through more timely medication management thereby minimizing harm. The research team has conducted studies to proactively monitor patients prescribed medications to identify potential ADRs, through pharmacist phone calls, interactive voice response (IVR) calls, and patient portal messaging. Because many patients regularly use SMS texting, the authors sought to leverage this technology to improve convenience and response rates. METHODS: The te

Outcomes of a Live Messaging, Blended Care Coaching Program Among Adults With Symptoms of Anxiety: Pragmatic Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common and can be debilitating. In addition, various barriers exist that can hinder access to adequate care. Coaching that is grounded in evidence-based interventions and delivered via synchronous (ie, live) text-based messaging could potentially increase the reach of mental health services among populations who select this modality instead of other services (eg, face-to-face coaching and psychotherapy). In addition, the delivery of live messaging coaching within a blended care model has the potential to combine the benefits of coaching with those of evidence-

Technical and Psychosocial Challenges of mHealth Usage for Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence Among People Living With HIV in a Resource-Limited Setting: Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Mobile communication has been found to improve antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among people living with HIV. In an ongoing randomized clinical trial, 2 mobile communication strategies (ie, sending SMS text messages and real-time medication monitoring [RTMM]) were used to improve adherence to ART among people living with HIV in Tanzania. We noticed remarkable discrepancies between self-reported adherence and adherence recorded by SMS text messaging or RTMM among some of the first trial participants. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe these cases and the observed discre

Automated Calls Added to SMS Reminders Reduce Missed Appointments among High-Risk Patients.

Missed outpatient appointments (or no-shows) pose a significant challenge to health systems by reducing access to care, wasting resources, and negatively impacting patient outcomes. Traditional interventions - such as overbooking, transportation services, phone calls, and financial incentives - have yielded mixed results and face limitations in terms of scalability. Predictive modeling offers a promising tool for identifying patients at high risk of missing their appointment, allowing for targeted outreach. However, targeted outreach typically needs to be paired with manual outreach efforts to

Exploring the Use of Instant Messaging Groups in the Postoperative Period for Pectus Excavatum Patients.

As a National Centre for Pectus Surgery, our department receives referrals from across England. To strengthen perioperative support for patients undergoing the Nuss procedure in the RESTORE Trial (August 2024-May 2025), individual WhatsApp groups were introduced, reflecting growing evidence of the value of text-based communication in surgical care. Fifty-two groups were established, each averaging 6.7 members, including patients, relatives, secretarial, and research staff. These groups facilitated direct communication with the clinical team. All conversations were anonymized prior to analysis.
