Prognostic Factors and Survival Time in Patients with Small Bowel Tumors: A Retrospective Observational Study.

This study examines survival time in patients with small bowel tumors and determines its contributing factors. In this retrospective analytical study, the medical records of 106 patients with small bowel cancer (from 2006 to 2011) were investigated. The patients' data were extracted, including age, gender, clinical presentation, location of tumor, histological type, grade of tumor, site of metastasis, and type of treatment. The Kaplan-Meier test was used to estimate the overall survival time and the Log-rank test to compare the survival curves. The Cox regression was also used to evaluate the

Evaluation of Impact of Perinatal Factors on Time to First Meconium Passage in Nigerian Neonates.

BACKGROUND: Delayed meconium passage is usually a signal to congenital distal bowel dysfunction. Timing of meconium passage may vary depending on race, sex and several perinatal factors. Understanding the timing and associated perinatal factors in any given population will help in prompt diagnosis and adequate management of cases in that population. OBJECTIVES: To determine the timing of first meconium passage amongst Nigerian neonates, and evaluate the impact of various associated perinatal factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study using interviewer-administered questionnaires

Improving pancreas surgery over time: Performance factors related to transition of care and patient volume.

BACKGROUND: Pancreas surgery has evolved with better diagnostic imaging, changing indications, and improved patient selection. Outside high-volume tertiary centers, the documented effect of evolution in care and volumes are limited. Thus, we aimed to review indications and outcomes in pancreas surgery during the transition from community-based hospital to a university hospital. METHODS: All pancreatic surgeries performed between 1986 and 2012 within a well-defined Norwegian population were identified from the hospital's database. Indications and postoperative outcomes, including mortality, we

Pre-operative risk factors associated with need for vasoepididymostomy at the time of vasectomy reversal.

The absence of sperm in the ejaculate after vasectomy reversal is commonly caused by failure to recognize and subsequently bypass epididymal or proximal vasal obstruction at the time of vasectomy reversal. If intra-operative proximal obstruction is suspected, vasoepididymostomy (VE) is recommended rather than vasovasostomy (VV). We sought to calculate the associated risk of needing VE, rather than VV with time from original vasectomy (obstructive interval) using a large cohort of vasectomy reversal patients. We reviewed the electronic and paper vasectomy reversal database by a single surgeon f

Factors affecting time to death from start of treatment among children succumbing to bacterial meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Many risks of death in childhood bacterial meningitis are well-identified, but factors influencing survival time have received less attention. Better understanding of this issue could help explain why adjuvant medications have performed unevenly in different trials. METHODS: In a post hoc analysis of prospectively collected data from a large bacterial meningitis treatment trial in Luanda, Angola, we compared time to death after initiation of antimicrobial treatment among 206 children with etiology and other patient characteristics. The risks of dying very quickly (0-4 hours), quic

Factors related to the time to cryptorchidism surgery--a nationwide, population-based study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Current guidelines recommend that the optimal timing for cryptorchidism surgery is by the age of 12 months. This study investigated the trend of surgical timing and examined the factors associated with time to surgery for cryptorchidism in Taiwan by using a nationwide, population-based database. METHODS: The present study utilized the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005, a subset of the National Health Insurance Research Database, which contains data on all paid medical benefit claims over the period 1997-2007 for a subset of 1 million beneficiaries randomly drawn

Results of second-time angioplasty and stenting for femoropopliteal occlusive disease and factors affecting outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Repeat percutaneous endoluminal interventions for femoropopliteal occlusive disease are common, but the outcomes are poorly understood. We sought to determine the results of second-time femoropopliteal percutaneous transluminal angioplasty/stenting (SPTAS) and identify factors associated with success or failure of a continued endoluminal revascularization strategy. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients undergoing multiple percutaneous endoluminal lower extremity interventions at a single institution from 2002 and 2009 identified 70 SPTAS in 70 limbs. Patient comorbidities, an

Pancreatic cellular injury after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: frequency, time course and risk factors.

Although often clinically silent, pancreatic cellular injury (PCI) is relatively frequent after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass; and its etiology and time course are largely unknown. We defined PCI as the simultaneous presence of abnormal values of pancreatic isoamylase and immunoreactive trypsin (IRT). The frequency and time evolution of PCI were assessed in this condition using assays for specific exocrine pancreatic enzymes. Correlations with inflammatory markers were searched for preoperative risk factors. One hundred ninety-three patients submitted to cardiac surgery were enro

[Combined hereditary deficiency in factors VII and X revealed by a prolonged partial thromboplastin time].

BACKGROUND: Congenital factors VII and X deficiency is rare. Association of both deficiencies is exceptional. CASE REPORT: A 3 year-old boy, born to consanguinous Moroccan parents, had a prolonged partial thromboplastin time discovered fortuitously. This finding led to the diagnosis of combined factors VII and X deficiency. His siblings had the same deficiencies. CONCLUSION: Profound deficiencies in factors VII and X are inherited following an autosomal-recessive mode. These deficiencies may be asymptomatic, only discovered by prolonged partial thromboplastin time. They may also be revealed

Age is Associated with Level of First-Time Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: An Ordinal Analysis of Factors Influencing Timing of Cervical Degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic cervical spondylosis is often treated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). However, few factors can predict which cervical level will degenerate and require intervention. This analysis evaluates preprocedural factors associated with level of first-time single-level ACDF. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent single-level ACDF without prior history of spine surgery. Mann Whitney U-tests and Spearman rank-order correlation were performed for analyses of associations between variables of interest and ACDF level. Adjusted

Factors Associated with Time to Change of Resuscitation Code (Do-Not-Resuscitate) and Time to Death after a Stroke: Palliative Aspects from a Tertiary Center.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Strokes rank among the most common acute conditions in neurology, leading to substantial increases in morbidity and mortality rates. It is essential to preserve patients' autonomy in decision-making regarding resuscitation measures to prevent unnecessary interventions and safeguard their right to self-determination. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with an active decision against post-stroke patient resuscitation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 139 patients from 2014 to 2021 at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. All

Transdiagnostic factors differentially shape choices and decision times in social evaluative learning.

BACKGROUND: Learning from feedback provided by others is important for navigating complex social environments. Aberrant processing of such social feedback is implicated in the psychopathology of several mental health disorders including social anxiety and depression. Recent psychiatric research increasingly adopts transdiagnostic approaches that examine mechanisms and constructs cutting across traditional diagnostic categories. METHODS: Here, we applied reinforcement learning models together with transdiagnostic measures of psychopathology to formally assess social evaluation learning. Human

Sinking Flap Syndrome: Risk Factors, Outcomes, and the Role of Neuroradiology in Cranioplasty Timing.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sinking flap syndrome (SFS) is an underrecognized complication of decompressive craniectomy often associated with neurologic decline. We assessed the neuroradiologist's role in identifying SFS, the effect of SFS development on the timing to cranioplasty, and predictive factors for development. We also propose standardized criteria for diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adults who underwent cranioplasty of ≥5 cm between 2019 and 2024. Radiology reports were reviewed for formal documentation of SFS. Patients meeting imaging criteri

Development of a time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay for salmonid insulin-like growth factor-2.

In mammals, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and IGF-2 regulate postnatal growth and embryonic development, respectively. In fish, as in mammals, IGF-1 promotes somatic growth, whereas evidence suggests the possible involvement of IGF-2 in the regulation of somatic growth. However, the measurement of circulating IGF-2 in fish has been hampered, possibly because of interference from IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs). Extraction of IGFs from IGFBPs is essential before measuring them using immunoassays. We optimized acid-ethanol (AE) extraction method for salmonid IGF-2 and developed a time-resolve
