Airway inflammatory effect of hydrogen peroxide in guinea pigs.

Reactive oxygens are now considered to be important substances in promoting inflammatory process. Recently, airway inflammation has attracted attention closely linked to bronchial asthma. The present study was undertaken to examine whether hydrogen peroxide, one of the reactive oxygens, could produce airway inflammation. Airway inflammation was assessed by airway vascular permeability in terms of pontamine sky blue (PSB) exudation. Airway resistance was measured with a modified Konzett-Rössler method and was expressed as a change in ventilation overflow. Inhalation of hydrogen peroxide (0.01-1

Ulcerative tracheobronchitis after lung transplantation. A new form of invasive aspergillosis.

Invasive aspergillosis is frequently a fatal disease in the setting of immunosuppression, including organ transplant recipients. The fungus usually affects lung parenchyma and may disseminate from there. We have recently noted tracheobronchitis in six patients with heart-lung and lung transplants, three of whom had deep mucosal ulceration and histologic evidence of invasive aspergillosis. This apparently new form of invasive disease is initially limited to the anastomosis site and large airways. Ulceration, necrosis, cartilage invasion, and formation of a pseudomembrane are the pathologic feat

Etiology of stridor in the neonate, infant and child.

Of 219 patients whose primary presenting symptom was stridor, 150 were males, 69 were females. All were under 2 1/2 years of age; more than half were four months of age or younger. Congenital anomalies caused stridor in 191 (87.2%). Congenital laryngeal anomalies accounted for the stridor in 132 (60.3%); there were 35 (16.0%) patients with congenital tracheal anomalies, 11 (5.0%) with congenital bronchial anomalies, 12 (5.5%) with infectious conditions, 12 (5.5%) with internal laryngeal trauma and 15 (6.8%) patients with other conditions. The cause of stridor was undetermined in two patients.

[Nasotracheal intubation and tracheostomy in acute epiglottitis and laryngotracheal bronchitis].

Acute infectious respiratory distress in children has known different modalities of treatment during these past few years, but controversy remains between tracheostomy and naso-tracheal intubation as ways to cope with the problem. This study, which was undertaken at St. Justine's Hospital in Montreal, reports our complications with the two methods and shows that non-fatal complications are about the same but less serious with naso-tracheal intubation, whereas mortality was 3.2% with tracheostomy and 0% with naso-tracheal intubation. These results entitle us to think that naso-tracheal intubati

The influence of dose fractionation on acute and late reactions in patients with postoperative rasiotherapy for carcinoma of the breast.

The clinical courses of 418 patients with breast carcinoma who received postradical-mastectomy radiation therapy to the internal mammary and supraclavicular are were revied in order to determine the normal tissue tolerance with various time-dose fractionation radiation regimens. Four different dose fractionation schedules wereemplyed during the period 1958-1968 at Memorial Hospital: 4900 rads/10f/32d; 4410 rads/9f/30d; 5000 rads/13f/18d; and 4600 rads/20f/28d. There was no difference in the acute reaction or local recurrence rate of the tumor in the irradiated area among the four fractionation

Antibiotic Choice and Outcomes for Respiratory Infections in Children With Tracheostomies.

OBJECTIVE: Respiratory infections are a major cause of hospitalization in children with tracheostomies, contributing significantly to hospital expenses. Limited data exist to describe optimal diagnostic strategies or management recommendations for these infections. This study aimed to explore factors associated with antibiotic therapy, including usage, administration route, duration, variables influencing the decision to prescribe antibiotics, and outcomes in children with tracheostomies experiencing episodes of respiratory infection other than pneumonia (tracheobronchitis and nonspecific resp

Case of pseudomembranous necrotizing tracheobronchial aspergillosis in an immunocompetent host.

A 44-year-old Korean male died of rapidly progressive respiratory failure and refractory hypoxemia in 8 days after being admitted with a fever and dyspnea. The patient was diagnosed with pseudomembranous necrotizing tracheobronchial aspergillosis by fibroptic bronchoscopy and it was not related to an invasion of the pulmonary parenchyma. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents a patient with pseudomembranous necrotizing tracheobronchial aspergillosis that developed in an immunocompetent host, rapidly resulting in airway obstruction with acute respiratory failure and refractory hypox

Laryngeal sporotrichosis causing stridor in a young child.

Fungal infections of the larynx are rare entities that must be considered in the differential diagnosis of the patient who presents with laryngeal symptoms. We present an unusual case of initially recurrent and then persistent stridor in a 19-month-old girl, unresponsive to 4 months of antibiotic and steroid therapy. Upon our laryngoscopic examination, the patient was noted to have an ulcerated, granulomatous process involving the larynx. She also had an erythematous papule on the left thigh. Fungal cultures of both sites grew Sporothrix schenckii. The patient was treated with systemic antifun

[Some respiratory viruses in the etiology of acute upper respiratory infections].

The viral etiology of acute respiratory diseases, determined in 107 children admitted to hospital during the 1966-1969 period, was confirmed in 36% of the cases by isolation of the viral agent and in 59% by serologic reactions. Parainfluenza viruses, especially of type 1 and 3, were encountered more often in the etiology of acute or obstructive laryngitis, and the syncytial respiratory virus in tracheobronchitis.

Pathology of wild Norway rats in Vancouver, Canada.

To achieve a contemporary understanding of the common and rare lesions that affect wild, urban Norway rats ( Rattus norvegicus), we conducted a detailed pathology analysis of 672 rats from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Grossly evident lesions, such as wounds, abscesses, and neoplasms, were present in 71 of 672 rats (11%) and tended to be severe. The most common and significant lesions were infectious and inflammatory, most often affecting the respiratory tract and associated with bite wounds. We assessed a subset of rats (up to n = 406 per tissue) for the presence of microscopic lesions

Pathology of Equine Influenza virus (H3N8) in Murine Model.

Equine influenza viruses (EIV)-H3N8 continue to circulate in equine population throughout the world. They evolve by the process of antigenic drift that leads to substantial change in the antigenicity of the virus, thereby necessitating substitution of virus strain in the vaccines. This requires frequent testing of the new vaccines in the in vivo system; however, lack of an appropriate laboratory animal challenge model for testing protective efficacy of equine influenza vaccine candidates hinders the screening of new vaccines and other therapeutic approaches. In the present investigation, BALB/
