Risk factors and economic impact of long-term nursing care after major trauma.

INTRODUCTION: The public could bear a heavy economic burden for trauma survivors needing long-term nursing care, especially in countries such as Taiwan that have universal health insurance coverage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the data from the National Health Insurance Research Database and to assess reimbursement to trauma patients with long-term sequelae who need nursing care. METHODS: This study included all patients who suffered major trauma (injury severity score ≥ 16) in Taiwan from 2003 to 2007. Ten years of follow-up were analyzed. Patients aged 18 to 70 who survived for

Three decades of eating disorders in Dutch primary care: decreasing incidence of bulimia nervosa but not of anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Whether the incidence of eating disorders in Western, industrialized countries has changed over time has been the subject of much debate. The purpose of this primary-care study was to examine changes in the incidence of eating disorders in The Netherlands during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. METHOD: A nationwide network of general practitioners (GPs), serving a representative sample (~1%) of the total Dutch population, recorded newly diagnosed patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) in their practice during 1985-1989, 1995-1999, and 2005-2009. GPs are key player

Climatic factors associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a spatial analysis from Taiwan.

Few studies have assessed the spatial association of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) incidence in the world. The aim of this study was to identify the association of climatic factors and ALS incidence in Taiwan. A total of 1,434 subjects with the primary diagnosis of ALS between years 1997 and 2008 were identified in the national health insurance research database. The diagnosis was also verified by the national health insurance programme, which had issued and providing them with "serious disabling disease (SDD) certificates". Local indicators of spatial association were employed to invest

The effect of herd formation among healthcare investors on health sector growth in China.

BACKGROUND: China has become the world's second largest healthcare market based on a recent report by the World Health Organization. Eventhough China achieved universal health insurance coverage in 2011, representing the largest expansion of insurance coverage in human history achieved; health inequality remains endemic in China. Lessons from the effect of market crisis on health equity in Europe and other places has reignited interest in exploring the potential healthcare market aberrations that can trigger distributive injustice in healthcare resource allocation among China's provinces. Health USA. A national health program for the United States.

The Health USA Act of 1991 addresses two fundamental health services financing problems: the more than 30 million uninsured persons and the rising costs for health care and for health insurance. Health USA would provide coverage of the entire resident population for comprehensive medical and preventive health and long-term care services through a universal tax-funded financing system. The federal government would contribute an average of 87% of program costs to each state, which would establish, under federal guidelines, a state health program. Each individual or family may enroll in any healt

Falling short of universal access to reproductive health: unintended pregnancy and contraceptive use among Mexican women with HIV.

A favourable context for women with HIV to prevent unintended pregnancy is a cornerstone of reproductive rights and will contribute to achieving universal access to reproductive health, a Millennium Development Goal target. This analysis explores the reproductive trajectories of Mexican women with HIV post-diagnosis and their access to reproductive counselling and use of contraceptives. In-depth interviews and short surveys were conducted with women of reproductive age living with HIV. Results indicate that sexual and reproductive health counselling in HIV care focuses on the male condom and d

Prevalence and predictors of self-medication among university students in Dodoma City, central Tanzania.

Self-medication carries substantial risk of deleterious consequences to individuals and the healthcare system. Understanding its prevalence and predictors is an important pre-requisite for changing this behavior. This was an analytical cross-sectional study that involved university students in two universities in Dodoma city council. We selected 620 study participants for inclusion through multistage sampling procedure, for a semi-structured questionnaire interview. We used STATA version 14 to perform logistic regression analysis in determining the strength of the association. The prevalence o
