Factors affecting visual acuity after accelerated crosslinking in patients with progressive keratoconus.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to report the outcomes of patients with progressive keratoconus who were treated via accelerated crosslinking (CXL) 6 months earlier and to determine the factors that promoted improved visual acuity after treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study included 35 eyes of 34 patients with progressive keratoconus who underwent CXL. Topographical measurements were obtained preoperatively and in the first, third, and sixth months postoperatively using a rotating Scheimpflug camera. The uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), flat kerat

Endophthalmitis outbreaks following cataract surgery: causative organisms, etiologies, and visual acuity outcomes.

UNLABELLED: A systematic review of 27 reports of endophthalmitis outbreaks following cataract surgery between 1985 and 2011 found the 2 most common causes associated with the outbreaks were contaminated solutions, 10 reports (37%), and contaminated phacoemulsification machines, 6 reports (22.2%). Other possible sources of contamination included ventilation systems, 3 (11.1%); defective sterilization, 3 (11.1%); miscellaneous, 3 (11.1%); in 5 outbreaks (18.5%), no possible source could be identified. Bacteria occurred in 23 outbreaks (85.2%) and fungus in 4 (14.8%). Causative organisms were gra

Visual acuity under combined astigmatism and coma: optical and neural adaptation effects.

Previous studies suggest that certain combinations of coma and astigmatism improve optical quality over astigmatism alone. We tested these theoretical predictions on 20 patients. Visual acuity (VA) was measured under best spherical correction for different conditions: low- and higher order aberrations corrected, in the presence of 0.5 D of induced astigmatism, and adding different amounts of coma to 0.5 D of astigmatism. Measurements were performed for different relative angles between coma and astigmatism and for selected conditions, also through-focus. Adding coma (0.23 μm for 6-mm pupil) to

Inferring myopia over the lifecourse from uncorrected distance visual acuity in childhood.

AIM: To report the usefulness of uncorrected distance visual acuity (DVA) at 16 years to "screen" for myopia status and to assess the lifetime risk of myopia, based on a national birth cohort. METHODS: 1867 members of the 1958 British birth cohort for whom there were data on acuity at 16 years had autorefraction, as part of a biomedical survey, at 45 years. Reduced uncorrected DVA at age 16 years (6/12 or worse in both eyes) was compared with adult refraction (spherical equivalent). RESULTS: Only a quarter of individuals in the population studied who had developed myopia by 45 years of age h

Hypotonous maculopathy and normal visual acuity secondary to post-traumatic cyclodialysis cleft.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic cyclodialysis clefts commonly lead to profound visual loss secondary to hypotonous maculopathy. Current literature regarding cyclodialysis clefts definitively outlines the management of visual loss resulting from hypotonous maculopathy. Because hypotonous maculopathy with normal visual acuity is rarely reported, management is less well defined. Management guidelines for individuals with and without visual loss secondary to hypotonous maculopathy are reviewed. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old man came to us with symptoms of blur and glare in his left eye following airbag t

[Clinical index for prediction of visual acuity after cataract surgery--personal experience].

The authors are giving an account of their own experience with the clinical index for prediction of the visual acuity after cataract surgery. The index uses the following data - age, visual acuity before operation, number of regularly taken drugs and frequency of reading before operation. In 171 eyes of patients operated on account of cataract by different techniques (the patients were not specially selected and some suffered from other eye diseases), the authors found a close agreement between the vision predicted by means of the clinical index and the final visual acuity after operation. Visual acuity in esotropic cats following occlusion of the non-deviating eye.

The present study examined the possibility that strabismic amblyopia may be explained in terms of binocular competition. This was done by measuring visual acuity in strabismic kittens whose deviating eye was placed at an advantage over the other. Four groups of kittens were studied: Normal/Normal (N/N); Lid-sutured/Normal (LS/N); Strabismic/Normal (S/N); Strabismic/Lid-sutured (S/LS). In conditions 2-4 kittens underwent lateral rectus section and/or unilateral lid suture around the time of natural eye opening. Visual acuity measurements were made using the jumping stand technique and the follo

Neodymium: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy: visual acuity outcome and intraocular pressure elevation.

A Q-switched neodymium: YAG laser was used to perform 67 posterior capsulotomies in 67 patients. A clear visual axis was produced in all the eyes. The visual acuity improved by one or more Snellen lines in 90% of the eyes, and the final visual acuity was 20/40 (6/12) or better in 78% of the eyes. Cystoid macular edema developed in two patients after capsulotomy. Increases in intraocular pressure were most prevalent in the early postoperative period. No significant correlation was found between the acute pressure rise and the laser energy used, a previous history of glaucoma or the presence of

Assessment of visual acuity in adult patients with strabismic amblyopia: a comparison between the preferential looking method and different acuity charts.

PURPOSE: Grating acuity values obtained with preferential looking techniques do not correspond to test results obtained with letter charts. The aim of the study was to investigate the agreement between grating acuity and other acuity tests. METHODS: Twenty-eight adult patients with strabismic amblyopia were assessed with the preferential looking-method and other linear and single letter and symbol tests. RESULTS: Assessment with preferential looking regularly led to an overestimation of the acuity values, but between preferential looking and single optotypes there was a much better agreement
