Endoscopic laser thyroarytenoid myoneurectomy in patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia: a pilot study on long-term outcome on voice quality.

OBJECTIVES: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is a focal laryngeal dystonia, which compromises greatly the quality of life of the patients involved. It is a severe vocal disorder characterized by spasms of laryngeal muscles during speech, producing phonatory breaks, forced, strained and strangled voice. Its symptoms result from involuntary and intermittent contractions of thyroarytenoid muscle during speech, which causes vocal fold to strain, pressing each vocal fold against the other and increasing glottic resistance. Botulinum toxin injection remains the gold-standard treatment. However, a

Longitudinal effects of botulinum toxin injections on voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL) for patients with adductory spasmodic dysphonia.

Adductory spasmodic dysphonia is a focal dystonia of laryngeal muscles. Patients with this disorder typically have severe vocal difficulties, with significant functional, social, and emotional consequences. There is no widely accepted cure for this condition, however, botulinum toxin injections of the thyroarytenoid muscles are considered by most voice clinicians to be the state of the art treatment. Based on extensive experience treating patients for adductory spasmodic dysphonia, we feel that traditional means of voice assessment do not adequately measure either the disease severity or the t

Acoustic outcomes and voice-related quality of life in male-to-female transsexuals undergoing Wendler glottoplasty: a single-centre experience.

INTRODUCTION: Many transsexual women seek to feminise their voice through pitch elevation surgeries so that it becomes congruent with their gender identity. This study aims to determine the safety and effectiveness of Wendler glottoplasty (WG) in vocal feminisation through the assessment of acoustic and aerodynamic parameters of the voice, as well as voice-related quality of life (QoL) in male-to-female transsexuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of transsexual women who underwent WG for voice feminisation at our institution between 2016 and 2023. All a

Relationships Between Vocal Fold Adduction Patterns, Vocal Acoustic Quality, and Vocal Effort in Individuals With and Without Hyperfunctional Voice Disorders.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Increased vocal effort and aberrant vocal quality are often attributed to vocal fold hyperadduction in hyperfunctional voice disorders. However, there are currently no established methods to quantify vocal fold adduction beyond subjective descriptors in this clinical population. Furthermore, relationships between vocal fold adduction patterns, vocal effort severity, and vocal quality are not well characterized. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (1) quantify vocal fold adduction, applying a previously validated method developed for patients with vocal fold p

Diagnostic Accuracy of Acoustic Voice Quality Index Version 02.03 in Discriminating across the Perceptual Degrees of Dysphonia Severity in Kannada Language.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has been reported to be a sensitive tool for discriminating between the normal and dysphonic voices, however, there is a dearth of research focused on investigating the diagnostic accuracy of AVQI in discriminating across the perceptual categories of dysphonia severity ie, slight, moderate, and severe. Hence, the present study is a preliminary attempt to document the AVQI across the degrees of dysphonia severity and to verify whether the AVQI can discriminate across these degrees of perceptual dysphonia severity. METHOD: A total of 71 dysphonic

[Context influence on the perception of dysphonia: when the knowledge of the patient's clinical state can modify the results of perceptual voice quality assessment].

Two experiments were conducted to examine how knowledge of the patient's clinical state affects the results of perceptual voice quality assessment performed by specialists in voice therapy. This study involved 53 patients with a dysphonia. For each speaker, we selected a pair of recordings made in different circumstances. These pairs of voices were presented to seven listeners (ENT surgeons or speech therapists). The task was to perceptually compare the severity of the dysphonia between the 2 recordings of the pair. Stimuli were presented first in a blind test, then several weeks later with ac
