Spillover infections by rustrela virus, borna disease virus 1 and tick-borne encephalitis virus revealed by retrospective screening of mammalian encephalitis of unknown origin.

BACKGROUND: Cross-species transmission of several viral neuropathogens may lead to fatal disease in incidental hosts. The newly discovered rustrela virus (RusV) as well as Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) of hemagglutinin subtype H5 may cause fatal lymphocytic meningoencephalitis in a broad range of mammalian species after crossing species borders. Here, we tested brain tissue samples from 191 animals representing 19 mammalian species diagnosed with lymphocytic meningoencephalitis from 1989 to 2024 for the

Exposure to selected pathogens in wild mammals from a rescue and rehabilitation center in southern Italy.

Wildlife is at the same time a reservoir and sentinel of numerous infections for humans and domestic animals. For this reason, wildlife rehabilitation centers represent an opportunity to carry out surveillance against the most varied infections. In this work, wild animals (canids, mustelids, erinaceids, and cervids) hospitalized at a first aid center in southern Italy were sampled and tested with multispecies ELISAs and rapid tests against a panel of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Foxes and wolves were exposed to Brucella canis, Coxiella burnetii, canine coronavirus, an

Infectivity and Potential Zoonotic Characteristics of Porcine Pseudorabies Virus in Human Cells.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is widely spread, characterized by high contagiousness, high viral load, and strong infectivity, and poses severe threats to the global pig farming industry. Apart from pigs, PRV can also infect several other mammals, including mice, cattle, cats, dogs, and wolves, with diverse clinical symptoms. Notably, approximately more than 20 cases of human PRV infection have been reported in recent years, with fever, seizures, human encephalitis, intraocular inflammation, and severe central nervous system symptoms. However, whether PRV can infect humans or belongs to a zoonotic

Clade-specific forebrain cytoarchitectures of the extinct Tasmanian tiger.

The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, is the largest of modern-day carnivorous marsupials and was hunted to extinction by European settlers in Australia. Its physical resemblance to eutherian wolves is a striking example of evolutionary convergence to similar ecological niches. However, whether the neuroanatomical organization of the thylacine brain resembles that of canids and how it compares with other mammals remain unknown due to the scarcity of available samples. Here, we gained access to a century-old hematoxylin-stained histological series of a thylacine brain, digitalized it at high resol

Genetic identification of Trichinella species found in wild carnivores from the territory of Kazakhstan.

Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is a foodborne parasitic disease caused by eating raw or undercooked meat from animals infected with Trichinella spp. larvae and affects both animals and humans. Although on the territory of Kazakhstan, the species characteristics and prevalence of this helminth were studied back in the 90s, the data have not been updated since then. Given the above, our study was aimed at identifying Trichinella spp. using parasitological and molecular genetics methods. In our work, we studied 160 samples of muscle tissue of wild animals living in the natural zones of

What colour are your eyes? Teaching the genetics of eye colour & colour vision. Edridge Green Lecture RCOphth Annual Congress Glasgow May 2019.

Eye colour and colour perception are excellent examples to use when teaching genetics as they encompass not simply the basic Mendelian genetics of dominant, recessive and X-linked disorders, but also many of the new concepts such as non-allelic diseases, polygenic disease, phenocopies, genome-wide association study (GWAS), founder effects, gene-environment interaction, evolutionary drivers for variations, copy number variation, insertions deletions, methylation and gene inactivation. Beyond genetics, colour perception touches on concepts involving optics, physics, physiology and psychology and

Dental pathology of the wild Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus): The study of a 20th century Portuguese museum collection.

For some wild canids, such as the Iberian wolf, there is a lack of in-depth knowledge about dental pathology. We aimed to evaluate it, in a standardized manner, in specimens from a Portuguese museum collection. Sixty-five deceased specimens of wild Iberian wolves, 61 complete skulls and 4 mandibles, collected in Portugal between 1977 and 1995, were analyzed. Sample comprised 18 females, 24 males and 23 individuals of undetermined sex. Teeth were evaluated by visual observation and dental radiography for tooth wear, periodontitis, fractures and other dental lesions. We have found several causes

Factors associated with uterine endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra in wild canids: implications for fertility.

The ability to safely and effectively manage reproduction is central to the success of AZA captive-breeding programs. Although the AZA Wildlife Contraception Center routinely monitors contraceptive safety, there have been no studies that compare the effects of contraceptive use to separation of males from females, the other option for preventing reproduction. We used retrospective medical records and pathology reports submitted by AZA and related facilities for the seven AZA-managed canid species to assess rates of uterine pathology relative to female reproductive life histories. Our results s

[Parasite-host relationships and treatment].

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a parasitic disease caused by intrahepatic growth of the larval stage of the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis. The main definitive host in Europe is the fox. The adult worms live in the fox intestine and their oncospheres are disseminated by faeces. Wolves, dogs and cats may also serve as definitive hosts. Small rodents--especially voles in Europe and small lagomorphs in Asia--are the natural intermediate hosts. The tumour-like larva is composed of multiple vesicles which produce protoscoleces, the fertile stage of the E. multilocularis metacestode. Carnivore

Environmental and human influence on the ecology of Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi in Western Europe.

Surveys on Trichinella parasites in domestic and sylvatic animals collected in France, Italy, and in the Extremadura region of Spain showed that the distribution of Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi is influenced by both environmental and human behaviour factors. In France, both Trichinella species are prevalent in the fox population from mountain areas and natural parks but are infrequent in wild boars (< 0.001%). In Italy, only T. britovi is present in sylvatic animals (foxes, wolves, and mustelids) living 500 m above sea level. This species is rare in wild boars (< 0.001%) in tha

Using 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography to localize the accessory pathway and evaluate cardiac function and dyssynchrony in pediatric patients with Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Wolf-Parkinson-White (WPW) accessory pathway (AP) may be associated with reentry supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in addition to ventricular dyssynchrony and cardiac dysfunction. Electrophysiological studies (EPS) are the gold standard for the localization of the AP; however, 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) may help in the localization of the AP noninvasively. Our study aims to evaluate the capability of 2D-STE for AP localization and the identification of AP-related contractile abnormalities and dyssynchrony in pediatric patients with WPW syndrome. This prospective

Circulation of diverse protoparvoviruses in wild carnivores, Italy.

Protoparvovirus is a monophyletic viral genus that includes the species Carnivore protoparvovirus-1 infecting domestic and wild carnivores. In this paper, the results of an epidemiological survey for Carnivore protoparvovirus-1 in wild carnivores in Italy are reported. Overall, 34 (11.4%) out of 297 tested animals were positive for Carnivore protoparvovirus-1, but the frequency of detection was much higher in intestine (54%) than in spleen samples (2.8%), thus suggesting that the intestine is the best sample to collect from wild animals for parvovirus detection. [History of the study, epidemiology of the disease and characterization of Borrelia burgdorferi infection].

From the beginning of the twentieth century interest in tick-borne borreliosis continues to be an important diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In 1977, in Lyme and Old Lyme, Cunnecticut, in the United States, arthritis and skin lesions were described in 12 children, which were associated with tick bites. The name of the place was called a syndrome of Lyme disease. Dr Willy Burgdorfer observed microaerophilic Gram-negative bacteria (Spirochetes) with a diameter of 0.3-0.5 µm and a length of about 20-30 µm, which were isolated from the tick colon. Lyme disease (borreliosis) is the most common t

A Novel SLC27A4 Splice Acceptor Site Mutation in Great Danes with Ichthyosis.

Ichthyoses are a group of various different types of hereditary disorders affecting skin cornification. They are characterized by hyperkeratoses of different severity levels and are associated with a dry and scaling skin. Genome-wide association analysis of nine affected and 13 unaffected Great Danes revealed a genome-wide significant peak on chromosome 9 at 57-58 Mb in the region of SLC27A4. Sequence analysis of genomic DNA of SLC27A4 revealed the non-synonymous SNV SLC27A4:g.8684G>A in perfect association with ichthyosis-affection in Great Danes. The mutant transcript of SLC27A4 showed an in

Surveillance for Echinococcus canadensis genotypes in Canadian ungulates.

The geographic and host distribution, prevalence and genotypes of Echinococcus canadensis in wild ungulates in Canada are described to better understand the significance for wildlife and public health. We observed E. canadensis in 10.5% (11/105) of wild elk (wapiti; Cervus canadensis) in Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, examined at necropsy, over two consecutive years (2010-2011). Molecular characterization of hydatid cyst material from these elk, as well as three other intermediate wildlife host species, was based on sequence of a 470 bp region of the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (NAD

Artificial insemination in canids: a useful tool in breeding and conservation.

Artificial insemination (AI) and semen freezing have become services available to dog owners worldwide, and the demand for services to freeze semen is increasing. In other canids such as the fox, the fur industry utilizes fresh or frozen semen to artificially inseminate vixens to produce pelts. Clearly, AI facilitates the use of a male to sire several females by diluting the ejaculate, increases breeding hygiene, and allows crossing between species with slightly different breeding seasons. The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is currently considered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) as on

Hydatidosis: dynamics of transmission.

Hydatidosis is a widespread zoonosis infecting a large number of animals and humans. Echinococcus granulosus has the smallest taenia adult of the cestodes but with the largest larva. Its morphologic and biologic features were identified with DNA analysis. Different strains were separated according to the intermediate hosts: sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, camels. Definitive host are canids, mostly dogs, where the worm grows to adulthood in several months. The eggs are scattered in the pasture by wind and water and are ingested by various hosts. The larvae migrate through the intestinal wall and p

Exploring the Genetic Diversity of Candida albicans in Animal Hosts: A One Health Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Candida albicans is an important priority fungal pathogen that commonly colonizes humans and a wide range of animal hosts, although its population structure in wildlife remains poorly explored. METHODS: In this study, 41 C. albicans isolates obtained from Italian wild animals (European hedgehogs, wolves, foxes, badgers, roe deer and porcupine) were identified by hwp1-specific PCR and subsequently genetically characterized using ABC typing, mating-type locus analysis and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). RESULTS: Several isolates were heterozygous at the hwp1 locus, and one rar

Lead and Other Trace Element Levels in Brains of Croatian Large Terrestrial Carnivores: Influence of Biological and Ecological Factors.

Trace element pollution can adversely affect the brains of individuals and thus impact the entire population of apex predators, such as large European carnivores. We assessed exposure to prominent neurotoxicants As, Cd, Hg and Pb by measuring their brain stem levels in brown bears (n = 114), grey wolves (n = 8), Eurasian lynx (n = 3), and golden jackals (n = 2) sampled in 2015-2022 in Croatia. The highest of the non-essential elements was the Pb level in the bears' brains (median, Q1-Q3; 11.1, 7.13-24.1 μg/kg wet mass), with 4% of animals, all subadults, exceeding the established normal bovine
