Parietal dysgraphia: characterization of abnormal writing stroke sequences, character formation and character recall.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize various dysgraphic symptoms in parietal agraphia. METHOD: We examined the writing impairments of four dysgraphia patients from parietal lobe lesions using a special writing test with 100 character kanji (Japanese morphograms) and their kana (Japanese phonetic writing) transcriptions, and related the test performance to a lesion site. RESULTS: Patients 1 and 2 had postcentral gyrus lesions and showed character distortion and tactile agnosia, with patient 1 also having limb apraxia. Patients 3 and 4 had superior parietal lobule lesions and features characteristic of

Changes in cortical inhibition during task-specific contractions in primary writing tremor patients.

Primary writing tremor (PWT) is a rare disease of unknown pathophysiology. We studied changes in silent period (SP) duration, after transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), set at 20% above the motor threshold in 6 PWT patients and 7 healthy control subjects. SP duration was tested during a task-specific act, i.e., writing that induced tremor in all patients in the affected hand (Wr); nonspecific voluntary contraction of intensity, matching that developed during writing (VCWr); and during near maximal voluntary contraction (VCNmax). There were no differences in SP duration during Wr and VCWr c

[Alphabetization and rehabilitation of reading/writing disorders through a phonetic-visual-articulatory method].

BACKGROUND: Alphabetization and rehabilitation of reading/writing disorders through a phonetic-visual-articulatory method (Método das Boquinhas - Jardini, 1997). This methodology combines neuropsychological inputs, such as sounds/phonemes, letters/graphemes to the visual representation of mouth position/articulemes. AIM: To alphabetize and/or rehabilitate children who presented reading/writing disorders, of varied etiologies, with consistent short-term results, in a combined intervention with a speech-language pathologists and a psycho-pedagogue. METHOD: Participants of this study were 30 ch

Stroke direction asymmetry in figure drawing: influence of handedness and reading/writing habits.

Recent studies suggest that asymmetries noted in certain nonlinguistic tasks used in laterality research (e.g., facial affect judgment, line bisection) may in part be influenced by prior reading/writing habits. The present study examined the relative influence of reading/writing direction and handedness on the direction of stroke movement in free-hand figure drawing. One hundred twenty right and left handed brain-intact adult readers of scripts with opposing directionality (Hindi vs Urdu) and illiterate controls were observed while drawing a tree, a hand, a house, an arrow, a pencil, and a fis

[Micromotor recording of writing pressure during intracerevral stimulation at stereotactic operations (author's transl)].

Eight cases of spastic torticollis were examined during the course of stereotactic operations with the writing pressure apparatus of Steinwachs while the ventrolateral thalamus was stimulated. When 50 stimuli per sec are given, the significant changes of motor function in writing are the following: slowing of writing speed, an increase in writing pressure, greater changes of pressure amplitude with tendences to parallel course. With 25 stimuli per sec, simular results may appear, but smaller amplitude changes and lowering of writing pressure may also occur. When 8 stimuli per sec are given, no

Development and Validation of a Measure of Undergraduate Students' English Writing Motivation in Chinese Universities.

Prior second language writing motivation research tends to view writing motivation as a unidimensional construct or fails to represent the latest theoretical insights in motivational research. This study therefore aimed to validate the English as a Foreign Language Writing Motivation Questionnaire (EFL-WMQ) designed to capture the multidimensionality of EFL writing motivation from multiple theoretical perspectives. A secondary aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between EFL-WMQ dimensions and English writing performance. Data were collected from two independent samples of un

Reducing write amplification of DM-SMR disks by shingle-aware persistent cache.

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) Technology is a cutting edge disk tech that boosts areal density via overlapping track writing. However, track overlapping makes SMR devices unable to support in place updates on shingled tracks, risking data corruption and degrading random write performance. DM-SMR devices use an internal persistent cache to absorb writes and persist them later on in batches during garbage collection process to maintain compatibility. In this paper, we propose a new shingle aware persistent cache cleaning policy for DM-SMR drives. Unlike traditional management polices, our ne

Facilitators and barriers to engaging in expressive writing among health and social care professionals.

Healthcare workers in the UK report high levels of burnout and poor wellbeing, and interventions are urgently needed to address this issue. Expressive writing, whereby individuals write about emotionally laden thoughts or experiences, is an effective intervention for reducing stress and enhancing wellbeing, and is a potential candidate for use with healthcare workers. However, it is crucial that the preferences of healthcare workers are taken into account in the design of future trials in this area, and that perceived barriers and facilitators to engaging with expressive writing activities are

The use of Artificial Intelligence in neurosurgical manuscript writing: Journal specific policies and their implementation.

INTRODUCTION: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown dramatically in recent years. In addition to its use for data analysis, its applications have extended to manuscript writing. In this article, we analyze the policies within top neurosurgical journals surrounding AI use for manuscript writing, its implementation, and whether disclosure of this practice affects article citation metrics. METHODS: Neurosurgical journals with h-indices ≥ 100 and with "spin*" or "neurosurg*" (including translations in other languages) and no other medical subspecialty within their title were included

Applying the ICRP model to writing recommendations in a neuropsychological evaluation for brain injury populations.

OBJECTIVE: This manuscript aims to describe how to use the Integrative Cognitive Rehabilitation Psychotherapy (ICRP) model to formulate neuropsychological recommendations following brain injury that are comprehensive, individually tailored, empirically based, and culturally appropriate. BACKGROUND: The ICRP model utilizes a developmental metacognitive approach to increase self awareness after brain injury by first addressing basic cognitive abilities before focusing on higher-level cognitive domains. Detailed within this model are assessments of stages of recovery (e.g. surviving, healing, th

Contribution of an academic writing intervention on the micro-macrostructure skills of students with intellectual disability.

Academic writing is a complex task involving microstructure (linguistic-level) and macrostructure (coherence structure) indices. Our goal was to examine the contribution of an academic writing intervention programme among students with intellectual disability at the microstructure and macrostructure levels while characterising the learning curves. Six students with mild intellectual disability studying for a BA (MCA = 30.43, MIQ = 69.17) participated in a spiral intervention programme of 32 lessons focusing on improving paragraph complexity and text structure measured at five time-points. Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in writing: a case report of deep agraphia.

We present the case report of a 61-year-old male participant with chronic conduction aphasia and deep agraphia after ischemic stroke who received training on writing under dictation associated with transcranial direct current stimulation. The treatment consisted of five 50-minute dictation sessions with the application of 2 mA of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation for 20 minutes over the left occipitotemporal cortex. The participant improved his written production of pseudowords and regular low-frequency words, via the phonological route, in addition to a small improvement in the p

No Check We Won't Write: A Report on the High Cost of Sex Offender Incarceration.

Child sexual abuse is a preventable public health problem that is addressed primarily via reactive criminal justice efforts. In this report, we focus on the cost of incarcerating adults convicted of sex crimes against children in the United States. Specifically, we summarize publicly available information on U.S. state and federal prison and sex offender civil commitment costs. Wherever possible, we used government data sources to inform cost estimates. Results indicate the annual cost to incarcerate adults convicted of sex crimes against children in the United States approaches $5.4 billion.

Reading and writing difficulties in third- and sixth-grade students: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: In Southern Italy and, specifically, in the region of Campania, many surveys show that the average of students with reading difficulties is much higher than in northern Italy and abroad. On the other hand, specific learning disorders (SLDs) in Campania are much less certified. Since there are no etiological reasons that can explain this apparent inconsistency, an objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the extent of reading/writing difficulties in students from a province of Campania and then to assess the ability of teachers to identify such difficulties in their s

Effects of Learning Strategy Training on the Writing Performance of College Students with Asperger's Syndrome.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are increasingly entering institutions of higher education. However, many are not prepared for the academic and social demands of postsecondary environments. Although studies have evaluated academic and social interventions for children and adolescents with ASD, little research exists on the college population. The current study utilized a multiple baseline across participants design to evaluate the effectiveness of a writing learning strategy on the writing performance of three college students with ASD. Results indicated that the quality of wr
