Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has emerged as a promising intervention in post-stroke rehabilitation. With approximately 12 million new stroke cases annually, stroke remains the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide, with this condition particularly prevalent in individuals over 60 years of age. Strokes are primarily classified as ischemic (85%) or hemorrhagic (10%-15%), with acute-phase treatments involving thrombolytics or surgery, and chronic-phase management integrating rehabilitatio

BACKGROUND: Impaired illness awareness or anosognosia is common in substance use disorders (SUDs), including alcohol use disorder (AUD), and is a significant barrier to treatment engagement. Neuroimaging studies of the neural correlates of impaired illness awareness in other conditions have observed functional differences in regions involved in self-referential processing, namely the frontoparietal and insular areas. This study aimed to extend this research to impaired illness awareness in SUDs.
METHODS: Twenty participants with AUD (n = 10) or other SUDs (n = 10) (age = 35.10 (± 10.59), 80%

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is frequently followed by persistent executive dysfunction linked to disruption of frontal and frontoparietal networks. High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been proposed as a potential adjunctive intervention to support frontal-network recovery. Still, evidence remains heterogeneous and biomarker-guided interpretation is limited.
METHODS: This retrospective multicenter observational cohort study evaluated adults with traumatic brain injury and persistent executive dysfunc

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus affects 10-15% of adults globally, yet there are still no effective treatments for this major health condition. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a noninvasive neuromodulation technique, allows modulation of pathologically altered functional activities to promote symptom remission. However, its efficacy critically depends on the selection of stimulation targets, and substantial interindividual variability has been observed in clinical trials. Here, we aimed to identify potential target regions that are causally involved in alleviating distinct functional

Background/Objectives: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has proven to be a promising intervention for major depressive disorder (MDD). Even so, the specific neurophysiological mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects, particularly regarding frontal EEG markers, remain insufficiently understood. This pilot study investigated both the clinical efficacy and neurophysiological impact of frontal tDCS in individuals with mild to severe depression, with particular focus on mood changes and alterations in Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA), Beta Symmetry, and Theta/Alpha Ratios at the F3

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of OA. Patients with mild-to-moderate OA, who do not respond to conservative treatment or yet warrant joint replacement, represent a significant clinical challenge. Genicular Arterial Embolisation (GAE) is a promising interventional radiological technique for OA. However, data highlight a consistent subset of patients that do not respond to GAE, despite a successful procedure. Pain Catastrophising (PC) represents a set of cognitive/affective biases to pain, linked to maladaptations in the descending pain modulatory system and has bee

OBJECTIVE: Currently, there is a lack of reliable evidence to prove the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the cognitive and emotional domains of neurodegenerative diseases (ND), leading to the absence of a unified and effective rTMS treatment protocol or stimulation targets. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes existing evidence to evaluate the efficacy of rTMS targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and non-DLPFC in the cognitive and emotional aspects of ND.
METHODS: For two common types of ND Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Park

BACKGROUND: Depression represents a leading cause of disability among adolescents worldwide, underscoring an urgent need for effective and accessible interventions. While pharmacotherapy is a first-line treatment, adjunctive non-pharmacological approaches like aerobic exercise and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have shown promise. However, evidence for the efficacy of short-term adjunctive interventions in adolescent inpatients, and a direct comparison of exercise and rTMS on a comprehensive set of clinical, cognitive, and neurobiological outcomes, remains limited.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) impairment has been found in patients with insomnia, and the frontotemporal region plays a central role in working memory. Therefore, changes in functional connectivity in the frontotemporal region may play an important role in WM impairment in patients of chronic insomnia, but little is known about the neural processes associated with WM dysfunction in patients with chronic insomnia. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate differences in cortical activation and functional connectivity during a WM task between patients with c

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are characterized by progressive cognitive decline. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technology, has been widely used to improve cognition in AD and MCI. However, the impact of rTMS on immediate and long-term cognitive functions in AD and MCI, as well as the optimal stimulating parameters, need further clarification.
METHOD: Thirty-one randomized controlled trials were included to examine the effects of rTMS on immediate cognition (post-treatment cognition), while nin

BACKGROUND: Working memory refers to a process of temporary storage and manipulation of information to support planning, decision-making, and action. Frequently comorbid alcohol misuse and sleep deficiency have both been associated with working memory deficits. However, how alcohol misuse and sleep deficiency interact to impact working memory remains unclear. In this study, we aim to investigate the neural processes inter-relating alcohol misuse, sleep deficiency and working memory.
METHODS: We curated the Human Connectome Project (HCP) dataset and investigated the neural correlation of worki

IMPORTANCE: Heroin addiction and related mortality impose a devastating toll on society, with little known about the neurobiology of this disease or its treatment. Poor inhibitory control is a common manifestation of prefrontal cortex (PFC) impairments in addiction, and its potential recovery following treatment is largely unknown in heroin (or any drug) addiction.
OBJECTIVE: To study inhibitory control brain activity in iHUD and HC, before and after 15 weeks of inpatient treatment in the former.
DESIGN: A longitudinal cohort study (11/2020-03/2022) where iHUD and HC underwent baseline and f

OBJECTIVE: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is resistant to treatment. Recent studies have widely applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to treat various brain dysfunctions, such as post-stroke syndromes. Nonetheless, a protocol for PSCI has not been established. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of our high-frequency rTMS protocol for PSCI during the chronic phase of stroke.
METHODS: In this prospective study, ten patients with PSCI were enrolled and received high-frequency rTMS on the ipsilesional dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DL

BACKGROUND: The tumor invasion of the frontal lobe induces changes in the executive control network (ECN). It remains unclear whether epileptic seizures in frontal glioma patients exacerbate the structural and functional alterations within the ECN, and whether these changes can be used to identify glioma-related seizures at an early stage. This study aimed to investigate the altered structural and functional patterns of ECN in frontal gliomas without epilepsy (non-FGep) and frontal gliomas with epilepsy (FGep) and to evaluate whether the patterns can accurately distinguish glioma-related epile

BACKGROUND: The moment-to-moment variability of resting-state brain activity has been suggested to play an active role in chronic pain. Here, we investigated the regional blood-oxygen-level-dependent signal variability (BOLDSV) and inter-regional dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) in the interictal phase of migraine and its relationship with the attack severity.
METHODS: We acquired resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging from 20 migraine patients and 26 healthy controls (HC). We calculated the standard deviation (SD) of the BOLD time-series at each voxel as a measure of the BO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer dementia is a complex clinical syndrome that can be defined broadly as an amnestic multidomain dementia. We previously reported human cortical proteins that are implicated in Alzheimer dementia. To understand the pathologic correlates of these proteins for underlying disease mechanisms, we investigated cortical protein associations with common age-related neuropathologies.
METHODS: Participants were community-dwelling older adults from 2 cohort studies of aging and dementia. All underwent detailed annual clinical evaluations, and brain autopsies were perfo

Transcranial magnetic stimulation studies have highlighted that corticospinal excitability is increased during observation of object lifting, an effect termed "motor resonance." This facilitation is driven by movement features indicative of object weight, such as object size or observed movement kinematics. Here, we investigated in 35 humans (23 females) how motor resonance is altered when the observer's weight expectations, based on visual information, do not match the actual object weight as revealed by the observed movement kinematics. Our results highlight that motor resonance is not robus

Abnormalities of posttranslational protein modifications (PTMs) have recently been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Glycosylphosphatidylinositols (GPIs) are a class of complex glycolipids, which anchor surface proteins and glycoproteins to the cell membrane. GPI attachment to proteins represents one of the most common PTMs and GPI-associated proteins (GPI-APs) facilitate many cell surface processes, including synapse development and maintenance. Mutations in the GPI processing pathway are associated with intellectual disability, emphasizing the potential role of GPI-APs in c

OBJECTIVE: Lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) are often observed within eloquent regions, which indicates that tumor resection in these areas carries a potential risk for neurological disturbances, such as motor deficit, language disorder, and/or neurocognitive impairments. Some patients with frontal tumors exhibit severe impairments of neurocognitive function, including working memory and spatial awareness, after tumor removal. The aim of this study was to investigate neurocognitive and functional outcomes of frontal LGGs in both the dominant and nondominant hemispheres after awake brain mapping.
