The sustainable conversion of floral waste into natural snake repellent and docking studies for antiophidic activity.

Snakes play an important role as predators, prey, ecosystem regulators and in advancing the human economy and pharmaceutical industries by producing venom-based medications such as anti-serums and anti-venoms. On the other hand, snakebites are responsible for over 120,000 annual fatalities; due to snakebites people lose their lives and suffer from diseases such as snake envenoming, epilepsy, and symptoms such as punctures, swelling, haemorrhage, bruising, blistering, and inflammation. Moreover, there are several challenges associated with different interventions for managing snakebites. Theref

Bacteriologic and plasmid analysis of etiologic agents of conjunctivitis in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, is one of the most common eye problems affecting all age groups in Nigeria. A better understanding of its epidemiology and the antibiotic susceptibility of etiologic bacterial agents is crucial for the initiation of preventive and therapeutic measures. This study determined the distribution and patterns of bacterial infections in Nigerian patients with conjunctivitis. Antibiotic resistance patterns and the plasmid profiles of these pathogens were also investigated. METHODOLOGY: A total of 83 consecutive and non-duplicate conjunct

Gram-Negative Taxa and Antimicrobial Susceptibility after Fecal Microbiota Transplantation for Recurrent Clostridioides difficile Infection.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has promising applications in reducing multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization and antibiotic resistance (AR) gene abundance. However, data on clinical microbiology results after FMT are limited. We examined the changes in antimicrobial susceptibility profiles in patients with Gram-negative infections in the year before and the year after treatment with FMT for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (RCDI). We also examined whether a history of FMT changed health care provider behavior with respect to culture ordering and antibiotic prescri

Necrotizing otitis externa: 19 cases' report.

Necrotizing otitis externa is an uncommon but severe infectious disease of the external auditory canal. Patients at risk are those immunodepressed or having diabetes. The causal germ is often Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Over a period of 10 years (1997-2006), we treated 19 patients: 94.7% had diabetes (insulin dependent in 6 cases). The causal germ was P. aeruginosa in 59% of cases. The pretherapeutic work-up included a computed tomography and a scintigraphy practiced in order to confirm diagnosis and assess the extension. Medical treatment was based on a parenteral antibiotic therapy using a third

Validation of a Monte Carlo Framework for Out-of-Field Dose Calculations in Proton Therapy.

Proton therapy enables to deliver highly conformed dose distributions owing to the characteristic Bragg peak and the finite range of protons. However, during proton therapy, secondary neutrons are created, which can travel long distances and deposit dose in out-of-field volumes. This out-of-field absorbed dose needs to be considered for radiation-induced secondary cancers, which are particularly relevant in the case of pediatric treatments. Unfortunately, no method exists in clinics for the computation of the out-of-field dose distributions in proton therapy. To help overcome this limitation,

Prevalence, Etiology, and Outcome of Sepsis among Critically Ill Patients in Malawi.

There are scarce data describing the etiology and clinical sequelae of sepsis in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study describes the prevalence and etiology of sepsis among critically ill patients at a referral hospital in Malawi. We conducted an observational prospective cohort study of adults admitted to the intensive care unit or high-dependency unit (HDU) from January 29, 2018 to March 15, 2018. We stratified the cohort based on the prevalence of sepsis as defined in the following three ways: quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) score ≥ 2, clinical suspicion of

Early generation dynamic and static proton arc treatment planning algorithms assessment in oropharyngeal cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Compared with intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), proton arc treatment (PAT) employs an increased number of gantry angles, potentially reducing healthy tissues doses, especially for complex target geometries found in oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) treatment. PAT plans can be optimized with algorithms, based either on "static" gantry position or "dynamic" gantry movement during dose delivery. Recent results have shown target coverage may suffer more from inter-fraction patient anatomical- and setup changes In PAT than IMPT. PURPOSE: We assessed if PAT plans generated with one st

Potential for Misinterpretation in the Laboratory Diagnosis of Clostridioides difficile Infections.

Background/Objective. Toxin-producing strains of Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) are the most commonly identified cause of healthcare-associated infection in the elderly. Risk factors include advanced age, hospitalization, prior or concomitant systemic antibacterial therapy, chemotherapy, and gastrointestinal surgery. Patients with unspecified and new-onset diarrhea with ≥3 unformed stools in 24 h are the target population for C. diff infection (CDI) testing. To present data on the risks of laboratory misdiagnosis in managing CDI. Materials. In two general hospitals, we examined 116 clinica

[Characteristics of war wound infection].

War wounds are the most complex type of non-targeted injuries due to uncontrolled tissue damage of varied and multifold localizations, exposing sterile body areas to contamination with a huge amount of bacteria. Wound contamination is caused by both the host microflora and exogenous agents from the environment (bullets, cloth fragments, dust, dirt, water) due to destruction of the host protective barriers. War wounds are the consequence of destructive effects of various types of projectiles, which result in massive tissue devitalization, hematomas, and compromised circulation with tissue ische

Knowledge translation concerns for the CONSORT-PRO extension reporting guidance: a review of reviews.

This review of reviews aimed to appraise the use of the CONSORT-PRO Extension as an evaluation tool for assessing the reporting of patient-reported outcome (PROs) in publications, and to describe the reporting of PRO research across reviews. We also outlined how variation in such evaluations impacts knowledge translation and may lead to potential misuse of the CONSORT-PRO Extension. We systematically searched Medline, Pubmed and CINAHL from 2013 to 2025 March 2021 for reviews of the completeness of reporting of PRO endpoints according to CONSORT-PRO criteria. Two reviewers extracted details of

[Prostatic secretion microbiota: a comparative analysis of the hronical prostatitis II and IIIA category].

BACKGROUND: Chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome IIIa (CP/CPPS IIIa) are separate nosologies defined diagnostic verification criteria according to the NIH-NIDDK classification (1995). The identification of enterobacteria in the prostatic secretion (PS) has long been a criterion for the diagnosis of CBP, while PS in patients suffering CP/CPPS IIIa was considered as "sterile". However, the introduction of various methods of PS`s in-depth analysis and UPOINTS classification (2010) development with the allocation of site I (infection) allows us t

Malnutrition-related hyperammonemic encephalopathy presenting with burst suppression: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hyperammonemia is a common cause of metabolic encephalopathy, mainly related to hepatic cirrhosis. Numerous nonhepatic etiologies exist but they are infrequent and not well known, thus, leading to misdiagnosis and inadequate care. Electroencephalography has a proven diagnostic and prognostic role in comatose patients. Burst suppression is a preterminal pattern found in deep coma states and is rarely associated with metabolic causes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 81-year-old Caucasian man presenting with rapidly progressive somnolence and mutism. Soon after his arriva

Leveraging patient experience data to guide medicines development, regulation, access decisions and clinical care in the EU.

Patient experience data (PED), provided by patients/their carers without interpretation by clinicians, directly capture what matters more to patients on their medical condition, treatment and impact of healthcare. PED can be collected through different methodologies and these need to be robust and validated for its intended use. Medicine regulators are increasingly encouraging stakeholders to generate, collect and submit PED to support both scientific advice in development programs and regulatory decisions on the approval and use of these medicines. This article reviews the existing definition

Meropenem-loaded Cement Is Effective in Preventing Gram-negative Osteomyelitis in an Animal Model.

BACKGROUND: Low-dose antibiotic-loaded acrylic cement is routinely used for preventing skeletal infection or reimplantation in patients with periprosthetic joint infections. However, few reports about the selection of antibiotics in acrylic cement for antigram-negative bacteria have been proposed. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does the addition of antibiotics (tobramycin, meropenem, piperacillin, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and aztreonam) to acrylic cement adversely affect compressive strength before and after elution? (2) Which antibiotics have the highest cumulative release within 28 days? (3) Wh

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (1995). I. Susceptibility distribution].

The frequencies of isolation and susceptibilities to antimicrobial agents were investigated on 704 bacterial strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 11 hospitals during the period of June 1995 to May 1996. Of the above bacterial isolates, Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 29.8% and a majority of them were Enterococcus faecalis. Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 70.2% and most of them were Escherichia coli. Susceptibilities of several isolated bacteria to antimicrobial agents were as followed; 1. Enterococcus faecalis Ampicillin (ABPC) and imipenem (IPM) sho

[Surveillance of resistance in the intensive care units using a cumulative antibiogram].

Empiric treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics exerts condensed pressure in intensive care units (ICUs) for the selection of multidrug-resistant bacteria. Multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria became the focus of interest owing to limited treatment options and negative effects on patient survival. Cumulative antibiograms can guide selection of correct empiric treatment, de-escalation treatment according to antibiogram results and development of policies in fight against antibiotic resistance. In this study, we aimed to determine the antibiotic resistance rates of gram-negative bacilli
