Phylogenomic and phenotypic analyses highlight the diversity of antibiotic resistance and virulence in both human and non-human Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen that causes infections in the immunocompromised. With a high incidence of muti-drug resistance, carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii is designated as a priority 1 pathogen by the WHO. The current literature has expertly characterized clinical isolates of A. baumannii. As the challenge of these infections has recently been classified as a One Health issue, we set out to explore the diversity of isolates from human and non-clinical sources, such as agricultural surface water, urban streams, various effluents from wastewater treatmen

Phylogenomics of novel clones of Aeromonas veronii recovered from a freshwater lake reveals unique biosynthetic gene clusters.

UNLABELLED: Aquatic ecosystems serve as crucial reservoirs for pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes, thus presenting a significant global health risk. Here, we investigated the phylogenomics of Aeromonas veronii from Lake Wilcox in Ontario. Among the 11 bacterial isolates, nine were identified as A. veronii. Notably, 67% of A. veronii isolates were potential human pathogens. Considerable genetic diversity was noted among the A. veronii isolates, suggesting the lake as a reservoir for multiple human pathogenic strains. Comparison of the A. veronii sequenced with global A. veronii genome

Group B Streptococci recto-vaginal colonization, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and associated factors among pregnant women at selected health facilities of Wolaita Sodo Town, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcal colonization of the gastrointestinal and genital tracts of pregnant women usually remains asymptomatic, even though it is the critical determinant of infection in neonates and young infants. It causes early and late onset of invasive Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease manifesting as septicemia, meningitis, and pneumonia. Now it is recognized as an important cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world including Ethiopia, where the magnitude of the problem has been little studied. The aim of this

Mosaic Ends Tagmentation (METa) Assembly for Highly Efficient Construction of Functional Metagenomic Libraries.

Functional metagenomic libraries, physical bacterial libraries which allow the high-throughput capture and expression of microbiome genes, have been instrumental in the sequence-naive and cultivation-independent exploration of metagenomes. However, preparation of these libraries is often limited by their high DNA input requirement and their low cloning efficiency. Here, we describe a new method, mosaic ends tagmentation (METa) assembly, for highly efficient functional metagenomic library preparation. We applied tagmentation to metagenomic DNA from soil and gut microbiomes to prepare DNA insert

Does ivacaftor interfere with the antimicrobial activity of commonly used antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa?-Results of an in vitro study.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Ivacaftor is a novel potentiator of defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein, which corrects the gating defect and increases ion-function of activated cell-surface CFTR. Bacteria also regulate their physiology through ion channels. However, little is known about the potential effects of ivacaftor on bacterial ion channels, which, in turn, may have a potential effect on transport across the bacterial cell membrane. Therefore, any change in the ability to transport molecules across cell membranes in bacteria could have an important
