The role of bovine pericardium matrix in immediate prepectoral breast reconstruction: Insights from the largest published retrospective series.

UNLABELLED: Immediate prepectoral breast reconstruction (IPBR) with biological matrices is a widely adopted technique, traditionally guided by ABS-BAPRAS eligibility criteria. In Europe, their use has declined in recent years, while polyurethane-covered implants have emerged as an alternative in some centers. This study reports the outcomes of IPBR with Exaflex, a biological matrix, performed at CHUVI in a real-world clinical setting.A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 80 patients and 112 mastectomies from a prospectively maintained database. The mean patient age was 51 years

Unraveling Benign Breast Conditions: A Comprehensive Study of Diagnosis, Treatment, and Care.

Introduction  The breast undergoes cyclical changes influenced by hormones, with benign breast diseases (BBDs) being more common than malignant conditions. These conditions can present with symptoms such as lumps, pain, swelling, and nipple discharge. This study investigates the incidence, clinical features, age distribution, and management of BBDs, providing insight into the common breast-related issues that affect women across different stages of life. Methodology  A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital from August 2021 to December 2022, including 100 pat

General practitioners' management of mastitis in breastfeeding women: a mixed method study in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Mastitis is a common reason new mothers visit their general practitioner (GP). In Australia, the Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic provides practical advice to GPs managing a range of infections, including mastitis. It is not known if Australian GPs prescribe antibiotics and order investigations as recommended for the management of mastitis. METHODS: A convergent mixed methods design integrated quantitative analysis of a general practice dataset with analysis of interviews with GPs. Using the large-scale primary care dataset, MedicineInsight, (2021-2022), antibiotics prescribed a

Detection of breast abnormalities using a prototype resonance electrical impedance spectroscopy system: a preliminary study.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy has been investigated with but limited success as an adjunct procedure to mammography and as a possible pre-screening tool to stratify risk for having or developing breast cancer in younger women. In this study, the authors explored a new resonance frequency based [resonance electrical impedance spectroscopy (REIS)] approach to identify breasts that may have highly suspicious abnormalities that had been recommended for biopsies. The authors assembled a prototype REIS system generating multifrequency electrical sweeps ranging from 100 to 4100 kHz every 12 s. Us

Retrospective analysis of a detector fault for a full field digital mammography system.

This paper describes objective and subjective image quality measurements acquired as part of a routine quality assurance (QA) programme for an amorphous selenium (a-Se) full field digital mammography (FFDM) system between August-04 and February-05. During this period, the FFDM detector developed a fault and was replaced. A retrospective analysis of objective image quality parameters (modulation transfer function (MTF), normalized noise power spectrum (NNPS) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE)) is presented to try and gain a deeper understanding of the detector problem that occurred. These m

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial of recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin on muscle strength and physical function and activity in older men with partial age-related androgen deficiency.

Despite partial androgen deficiency, the safety and efficacy of androgen therapy in older men remains controversial because controlled studies of testosterone have given equivocal results. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) can be conveniently and infrequently self-administered, and it increases not only circulating testosterone but also estradiol and other testicular steroids. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of 3 months of treatment with sc recombinant hCG (r-hCG, Ovidrel) on muscle mass, strength, mobility, and physical activity in ambulant, community-dwelling men more than 60 yr old ha

Skin-sparing mastectomy and immediate reconstruction: oncologic risks and aesthetic results in patients with early-stage breast cancer.

Skin-sparing mastectomy has been advocated as an oncologically safe approach for the management of patients with early-stage breast cancer that minimizes deformity and improves cosmesis through preservation of the skin envelope of the breast. Because chest wall skin is the most frequent site of local failure after mastectomy, concerns have been raised that inadequate skin excision could result in an increased risk of local recurrence. Precise borders of the skin resection have not been well established, and long-term local recurrence rates after skin-sparing mastectomy are not known. The purpo

Sclerosing lobular hyperplasia of the breast: imaging features in 15 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Sclerosing lobular hyperplasia is an infrequent benign lesion of the breast, defined as prominent hyperplasia of the lobules with sclerosis of the interlobular stroma. It commonly presents as a tumorlike mass clinically. Sclerosing lobular hyperplasia has been identified at biopsy at our institution with rare but increasing frequency. We reviewed the imaging features of 15 patients with biopsy-proven sclerosing lobular hyperplasia to determine if a characteristic imaging pattern could suggest this diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mammograms and sonograms of all women with path

Urinary undiversion in adults with myelodysplasia: long-term followup.

A total of 14 women and 6 men 19 to 39 years old (mean age 27 years) with myelodysplasia underwent undiversion 8 to 29 years (mean 16) after ileal conduit diversion. The main reasons for diversion were incontinence in 17 patients and failed ureteral reimplants in 3, and those for undiversion were a desire for an improved quality of life in 16, increasing hydronephrosis in 4 and stomal problems in 3. Preoperative assessment included upper and lower tract imaging, and video urodynamics. Operations on the ureters included reimplantation into an intussuscepted nipple valve in 8 patients, tunneled

A prospective longitudinal study of the release of oxytocin and prolactin in response to infant suckling in long term lactation.

We studied prospectively eight healthy postpartum breast-feeding women for 6 months during early, middle, and late lactation. Blood for measurement of oxytocin (OT), PRL, and arginine vasopressin was drawn before and every 3 min from each women during 15 min of infant suckling for two consecutive feedings during each stage of lactation. Basal plasma OT was not different in breast-feeding [0.7 +/- 0.1 (+/- SEM) microU/ml] and nonbreast-feeding women (0.8 +/- 0.2 microU/ml). OT increased significantly in response to infant suckling (P less than 0.00001) to 5.9 +/- 0.5 microU/ml and remained elev

Concurrent human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer with axillary nodal metastasis in a patient with pituitary prolactinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Managing high-risk human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer (BC) concurrent with a functioning pituitary adenoma is clinically challenging. Current oncological guidelines lack specific clinical consensus protocols regarding the simultaneous administration of intensive dual-HER2 targeted therapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and continuous dopamine agonists. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 5-year history of pituitary prolactinoma presented with a painless left breast mass over a 2-year duration. Her serum prolactin (PR

Awake endoscopic mastectomy in one-day-surgery: Preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: While enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and awake monitored anaesthesia care (MAC) have been described to promote same-day discharge (SDD) in conventional mastectomy, their application in reverse-sequence endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (R-E-NSM) has not yet been established. We present our protocol and early experience with awake R-E-NSM. METHODS: In this retrospective pilot case series, from February 2026 to April 2026, all consecutive awake R-E-NSM performed at Tor Vergata University Hospital were retrieved from a prospectively maintained database (Approval number 62.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for management of feeding dysfunction in breastfed newborns.

CONTEXT: The benefits of breastfeeding are well established, from reduced incidence of common childhood infections to decreased incidence of sudden infant death syndrome and infant mortality. Offering support to breastfeeding mothers should be a key aspect of care in the perinatal period. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether utilization of a standardized osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) protocol as an adjunct to lactation support improves feeding dysfunction in breastfed newborns. METHODS: This was a single-blinded, randomized, controlled, prospective pilot s

Case report: Possible role of low-dose PEM for avoiding unneeded procedures associated with false-positive or equivocal breast MRI results.

Contrast-enhanced breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is currently recommended as a screening tool for high-risk women and has been advocated for women with radiologically dense breast tissue. While breast MRI is acknowledged for its high sensitivity (with an exception for lower-grade ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) where emerging techniques like diffusion-weighted imaging offer improvement), its limitations include sensitivity to hormonal changes and a relatively high false-positive rate, potentially leading to overdiagnosis, increased imaging uncertainty, and unnecessary biopsies. These
