Anti-virulence strategies are being explored as a novel approach to combat pathogens. Such strategies include inhibition of surface adhesion, tissue invasion, toxin production, and/or interference with the gene regulation of other virulence traits. Listeria monocytogenes, the causative agent of listeriosis, is a facultative intracellular food pathogen characterized by a wide distribution in the environment. Its ability to persist within biofilms and to develop resistance to sanitizers is the cause of significant problems in food processing plants and of steep costs for the food industry. In hu

The current study describes the chemical profiles and biological activities of essential oils (EOs) from Ziziphus leucodermis stem and leaves for the first time. Higher quantity of β-eudesmol (1) was found in stem (43.4 ± 0.68%) compared to leave's oil, while leaves contained higher amounts of α-bergamotene (2, 13.5 ± 0.65%) and β-eudesmene (3, 7.4 ± 0.51%) compared to stem. Significant potential was shown by leave's oil having IC50 of 133.5 ± 0.80 µg/mL than stem's oil (IC50 = 210.4 ± 0.20 µg/mL) against breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cells. Similarly, higher inhibition was observed by leave's oi

In our previous investigation, we found that agarwood essential oil (AEO) has a sedative-hypnotic effect. Sedative-hypnotic drugs usually have an anxiolytic effect, where concomitant anxiety and depression are a common comorbidity. Therefore, this study further investigated the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of AEO using a series of animal behavior tests on a restraint stress-induced mice model. The elevated plus maze (EPM) test, the light dark exploration (LDE) test, and the open field (OF) test demonstrated that AEO has a significant anxiolytic effect. Simultaneously, the tail suspens

Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, characterized by tropical weather, with an estimated population of 21.4 million in 2017, one third of them being children. Advancing and rapidly changing technology, novel industries, consumer goods and equipment have introduced new health hazards of a chemical, biological and physical nature to future generations. The infant mortality rate has declined to around 8-9 per 100,000 since 2015. Congenital malformations were the most significant cause of neonatal death. Thus, there might be unproven environmental factors which affect infan

Diet-induced milk fat depression (MFD) is a multifactorial disorder that can be triggered by a variety of conditions. Feeding high amounts of starch and unsaturated fatty acids has been shown to reduce milk fat yield and composition, as well as alter ruminal biohydrogenation patterns. However, little is known about how starch degradability in the rumen influences recovery from diet-induced MFD and if production of milk fat-inhibiting isomers will persist following an episode of MFD. The objective of this study was to evaluate production performance and ruminal fermentation in cows recovering f

1,1-Dichloroethane (DCE) is a solvent that is often found as a contaminant of drinking water and a pollutant at hazardous waste sites. Information on its short- and long-term toxicity is so limited that the U.S. EPA and ATSDR have not established oral reference doses or minimal risk levels for the volatile organic chemical (VOC). The acute oral LD(50) in male Sprague-Dawley (S-D) rats was estimated in the present study to be 8.2 g/kg of body weight (bw). Deaths appeared to be due to CNS depression and respiratory failure. In an acute/subacute experiment, male S-D rats were given 0, 1, 2, 4, or
