Psychological and sleep-related functioning among women with unsettled infants in Victoria, Australia: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: To identify (a) clinical symptom profiles based on psychological and sleep-related functioning among women admitted to a residential early parenting service (REPS) and (b) factors associated with membership of profile groups. Background: Depression and anxiety are common among women with unsettled infants; less is known about other indicators of psychological distress and about maternal sleep. Methods: Women admitted to a REPS during a 5-month period completed validated measures of depression, anxiety, stress, irritability, alcohol use, fatigue, sleepiness and sleep quality. Latent

Modifiable partner factors associated with perinatal depression and anxiety: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal distress is a significant public health problem that adversely impacts the individual and their family. The primary objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to identify factors that partners can modify to protect each other from developing perinatal depression and anxiety. METHOD: In accordance with the PRISMA statement, we reviewed the risk and protective factors associated with perinatal depression and anxiety symptoms that partners can potentially modify without professional assistance (PROSPERO reference CRD42014007524). Participants were new or expe

Neonatal outcomes with caesarean delivery at term.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the impact of caesarean delivery on the incidence of selected neonatal outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 15-year, population-based, cohort study (1988-2002) using the Nova Scotia Atlee Perinatal Database compared neonatal outcomes in term newborns born by spontaneous and assisted vaginal delivery, with newborns born by caesarean delivery, with and without labour, using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: From a total of 142 929 deliveries, there were 27 263 caesarean deliveries, 61% of which were performed in labour. Relative risks were adjusted for year of birth, m

Maternal healthcare quality, continuity, and experiences among pregnant adolescents and adult women in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa: A cohort study.

The capacity of health systems to provide quality care for pregnant adolescents remains underexplored. This study examined the quality, continuity, and experiences of maternal healthcare among pregnant adolescents (<20 years) compared with adult women (20 + years) in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa. It also explored factors associated with mistreatment and obstetric complications among adolescents using data from the Maternal and Newborn Health eCohort study. We followed 3,051 pregnant women from their first antenatal care (ANC) visit until six weeks postpartum. We used descriptive analyses

Unveiling the potential biochemical effects of selected heterocyclic compounds as human Type-A γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA A) Modulator: An Insilico Approach.

BACKGROUND: Investigating the bioactivities of zuranolone derivatives as Type-A γ-aminobutyric acid inhibitors which will thereby down-regulate postpartum depression is considered a crucial study. METHOD: This study is aimed at investigating the biochemical activities of 1-(2-((3R,5R,8R,9R,10S,13S,14S,17S)-3‑hydroxy-3,13-dimethylhexadecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-17-yl)-2-oxoethyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carbonitrile derivatives against type-A γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA A) which will thereby enhance the activity of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in human central nervous system. RESULTS: In this wor

A brief international screening tool for traumatic birth and childbirth-related PTSD: the city BiTS-short form.

INTRODUCTION: Screening to identify traumatic births and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (CB-PTSD) is critical for reducing the global burden of maternal mental health challenges. Despite this, no brief, validated tools exist for international use. This study therefore developed and validated a short version of the City Birth Trauma Scale (City BiTS) to provide a brief, globally relevant screening tool. METHODS: The City BiTS-Short was developed in three stages. In stage 1, exclusive lasso statistical analyses were conducted on survey data of 11 302 postpartum women in 31 co

Development and Validation of a Novel Risk Calculator to Predict Sub-optimal HIV Outcomes Among Pregnant and Postpartum Women with HIV in Kenya.

No tool currently exists to predict the cumulative risk of suboptimal clinical outcomes among pregnant and postpartum women with HIV (PPWH). This study sought to develop and validate a parsimonious risk calculator capable of predicting disengagement from care and HIV treatment failure among PPWH. We created the risk calculator using data from 1,331 PPWH from Southwestern Kenya (Homabay, Migori, and Kisumu Counties) in the Mother Infant Visit Adherence and Treatment Engagement Trial. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression retained the most predictive variables from

Sense of coherence and health in women: a 25-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Health and Sense of Coherence (SOC) has been shown to be intertwined and argued to have a reciprocal relationship. The theory of SOC implies relatively stable scores during adulthood, however there are few longitudinal studies on the association between SOC and mental and somatic health. The main aim of the present study was to examine how SOC and self-rated health (SRH) are related during 25 years of follow-up. METHODS: Using paper questionnaires distributed by postal services, 415 mothers were followed from childbirth and 25 years prospectively. SOC was measured at three, 12 and

The contribution of iron deficiency to the risk of peripartum transfusion: a retrospective case control study.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency in pregnancy is associated with inferior maternal and fetal outcomes. Postpartum depression, prematurity, intrauterine growth restriction, impaired childhood cognition and transfusion are all sequelae of maternal iron deficiency anemia. Transfusion to women of childbearing age has important consequences including increasing the risk of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn with future pregnancies. The relative contribution of iron deficiency to transfusion rates in the peripartum period is unknown. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of iron deficiency

Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (single dose) for perineal pain in the early postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: Many women experience perineal pain after childbirth, especially after having sustained perineal trauma. Perineal pain-management strategies are thus an important part of postnatal care. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a commonly used type of medication in the management of postpartum pain and their effectiveness and safety should be assessed. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of a single dose of an oral NSAID for relief of acute perineal pain in the early postpartum period. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Tria

Psychiatric nurses' descriptions of women with postpartum psychosis and nurses' responses--an exploratory study in Sweden.

Postpartum psychosis is the most serious type of psychiatric illness related to childbirth. This interview study with nine psychiatric nurses in Sweden explored psychiatric nurses' descriptions of women with psychosis occurring in the postpartum period and nurses' responses when providing care to these women. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The nurses described delusions, disconnection, aggression, changed personality, self-absorption, insomnia, chaos, quietness, suicidal ideation, and 'strange eyes.' The description of strange eyes noted by the nurses has not been found in the

Implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of the continuous midwifery care model in socially vulnerable women: a convergent parallel mixed methods study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Social vulnerability during pregnancy correlates with an increased risk of negative maternal and neonatal outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) endorse the implementation of continuous care strategies to enhance outcomes. This project aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a continuous midwifery care model during pregnancy and delivery, as well as its impact on various maternal and neonatal outcomes for socially disadvantaged women in Iran. METHODS/DESIGN: This research will utilize a convergent parallel mi

A retrospective audit of pain assessment and management post-caesarean section at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The most common major surgical procedure performed worldwide is the caesarean section (CS). Effective pain management is a priority for women undergoing this procedure, to reduce the incidence of persistent pain (a risk factor for postpartum depression), as well as optimise maternal-neonatal bonding and the successful establishment of breastfeeding. Multimodal analgesia is the gold standard for post-CS analgesia. At present, no perioperative pain management protocols could be identified for the management of patients presenting for CS at regional hospitals in South Africa. This aud

The relationship between intimate partner violence and HIV outcomes among pregnant women living with HIV in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health concern particularly in pregnancy where IPV can have negative health implications for the mother and child. Data suggest IPV disproportionately affects pregnant women living with HIV (PWLWH) compared to those without HIV. HIV-related outcomes are worse among women experiencing IPV. Despite this knowledge, there is paucity of data concerning PWLWH and IPV in Malawi, where there is a high HIV prevalence (10.6%). OBJECTIVES: We aim to characterize IPV amongst PWLWH in Malawi and describe its relationship to demographic charact

The effect of pestle acupuncture for patients with lactation insufficiency after cesarean section: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cesarean section is a common operation in obstetrics, and the incidence of insufficient breast milk is high in parturients undergoing cesarean section. Studies have shown that acupuncture or massage at related acupoints can promote the secretion and excretion of milk. These external treatments are quick, safe, and effective. On the other hand, they can avoid the potential risk of changes in milk composition that may be caused by the use of drugs. Pestle needle therapy is a new branch of traditional acupuncture, and pestle needle operation does not need to break the skin. The pest
