This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of lamotrigine in binge-eating disorder (BED) associated with obesity. Fifty-one outpatients with BED by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition criteria, and obesity were randomized to receive either lamotrigine (N=26) or placebo (N=25) in a 16-week, double-blind, flexible-dose study. Lamotrigine (236+/-150 mg/day) and placebo had similar rates of reduction of weekly frequency of binge-eating episodes and binge days, weight and BMI, measures of eating pathology, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, impulsivity, and global se

Using a sample of 781 adolescents (ages 13-17, 52.8% male) from a community survey, this study examined gender differences in the co-occurrence of specific anxiety disorders with substance use in adolescents. The associations between anxiety disorders and substance use differed according to the particular anxiety disorders and forms of substance use being examined, as well as by gender. Social phobia was associated with cigarette smoking among boys only. For girls, social phobia appeared to be negatively associated with drug use. For the other anxiety disorders, the associations with substance

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to describe the natural course of tic disorders over a long period of time in Japanese adults patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) in terms of symptomatology.
METHODS: An extensive literature on TS cases was reviewed selectively and 31 TS patients (mean age: 31.4 years; sex: 28 males and 3 females) at our outpatient clinic were examined. The mean follow-up period of the patients was 7.6 years (SD: 8.1; 0 to 26). All the data available for this study, including medical charts, were examined systematically by two experienced child psychiatrists.

Treatment successes of various stereotyped behaviors in animals and humans has renewed interest in ethologic animal models for the study of psychiatric disorders. This report presents another such behavior occurring in horses to weaving. This anomalous, repetitive, and purposeless behavior draws analogies to human compulsive spectrum behaviors. A "weaver" provided an opportunity to evaluate serotonin, dopamine, and opioid neurotransmitter system contributions by probing each with a selective agent in A-B-A-C-A-D design. The horse was treated in sequential 1-month periods separated by 1-month w

OBJECTIVE: To explore the psychological experience and underlying mechanisms of "rest intolerance" among nursing interns.
BACKGROUND: Effective recovery is essential for preventing burnout and ensuring patient safety. However, nursing interns often experience "rest intolerance", a paradoxical psychological state where resting induces distress rather than recovery. As interns represent the future pipeline of the nursing workforce, understanding this phenomenon is critical for managers aiming to build resilient teams and reduce early-career attrition.
DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive phenome

Background: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder with a significant rate of patients remaining refractory to standard treatments. Refractory TS is defined as the persistence of clinically significant tics causing functional impairment despite adequate trials of both behavioral therapy and at least two generally accepted pharmacological treatments from different classes, administered at appropriate doses and durations. This systematic review synthesizes the current evidence on alternative pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for treatment-resistant TS

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and phonic tics. It is a condition that affects between 0.3% and 0.7% of children, and its pathophysiology remains largely elusive. TS is associated with structural and functional alterations in corticostriatal circuits and neurochemical imbalances. Even though TS is currently incurable, there are established treatment options available, including behavioral therapy and neuroleptics. The use of cannabis-based medicine for tic management is an emerging therapeutic strategy, although its efficacy is still

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a condition, which is an important psychosocial problem. The hormonal variations causing AGA are known, but whether behavioral patterns and lifestyle influence the condition and which age groups they influence is uncertain and such factors have not been studied in detail.
OBJECTIVES: To compare association of lifestyle patterns with androgenetic alopecia, prevalence of psychiatric symptoms and resulting quality-of-life (QoL) between two age groups of males with AGA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male subjects in each of the two age groups attending the hai

UNLABELLED: The recent introduction of the opioid antagonist naltrexone for alcohol-dependence therapy has been mainly based on behavioral animal models that provide evidence of the involvement of the endogenous opioid system in alcohol drinking and dependence. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms of the effect of naltrexone in alcoholic patients remain unknown. This study investigates the effects of a naltrexone challenge on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in chronic alcoholic patients during detoxification.
METHODS: Sixteen alcoholic inpatients underwent two 99mTc-hexamethyl propy

BACKGROUND: Computer perception (CP) technologies hold significant promise for advancing precision mental health care systems, given their ability to leverage algorithmic analysis of continuous, passive sensing data from wearables and smartphones (eg, behavioral activity, geolocation, vocal features, and ambient environmental data) to infer clinically meaningful behavioral and physiological states. However, successful implementation critically depends on cultivating well-founded stakeholder trust.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate, across adolescents, caregivers, clinicians, and devel

Prevalence of current comorbid DSM-IV disorders was assessed in a special school population of children and adolescents with ASD (N = 71, age 6.0-17.9 years), representing all cognitive levels and main ASD subgroups. Symptoms were assessed through parent interview and association to child characteristics was explored. Seventy-two percent was diagnosed with at least one comorbid disorder. Anxiety disorders (41%) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (31%) were most prevalent. Obsessive-compulsive disorder was more common in older children, and oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disord

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity of certain obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs; such as Tourette's disorder) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may serve to define important OCD subtypes characterized by differing phenomenology and neurobiological mechanisms. Comorbidity of the putative OCSDs in OCD has, however, not often been systematically investigated.
METHODS: The Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition , Axis I Disorders-Patient Version as well as a Structured Clinical Interview for Putative OCSDs (SCID-OCSD) were ad

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of olanzapine on aggressive behaviour and tic severity in children with Tourette's Syndrome (TS).
METHOD: Ten (10) subjects (aged 7-13 years) with a primary diagnosis of TS and a history of aggressive behaviour were treated in a single-blind, 2-week placebo run-in, 8-week treatment phase trial. The starting dose of olanzapine was 1.25-2.5 mg/day and was titrated at biweekly intervals, as tolerated. The mean dosage at the end of the trial was 14.5 mg/day.
RESULTS: All 10 subjects completed the study. Olanzapine produced clinically an

INTRODUCTION: Choking phobia has been rarely described in the literature and its prevalence has not yet been determined. Because of its clinical picture (female predominance, avoidance or refusal of certain foodstuffs, secondary weight loss, associated obsessive-compulsive symptoms), it is often misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa.
CASE REPORT: The authors describe the case of an 11-year-old girl, hospitalised for anorexia, who actually had choking phobia. Following a long history of anxiety disorders (including separation anxiety, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder), the choking phobi

Behavioural psychotherapy has long historical roots. Recently it has led to effective treatment for selected neuroses, including phobic, obsessive-compulsive and sexual disorders. Potent therapy has become a tool of experimental psychopathology which advances theory and practice. A pervasive principle is exposure of the patient to those stimuli which evoke his discomfort until this subsides. Level of arousal during exposure does not affect outcome. Theoretical issues are reviewed which decide when exposure will be sensitizing or habituating. Both psychoanalytical and conditioning models of neu

BACKGROUND: In the population of children and adolescents, epilepsy affects approximately 1% of cases, nonepileptic seizures are seen in approximately 3%, and endocrine disorders are several times more common. For this reason, coincidence of endocrine disorders and epilepsy and psychoneurologic disorders is frequent. Much less common are structural abnormalities (tumors, developmental abnormalities), and especially non-structural CNS abnormalities, resulting in coincidence of both disorders. There are no reports available in the literature that would address the problem.
AIM OF THE STUDY: 1)

Generalized Anxiety disorder (GAD) is a widespread psychiatric syndrome involving significant consequences on people's health. However, recent data show that this disorder has received little attention when compared to other anxiety disorders. A review of the publication on GAD also stated that the majority of research has been conducted on descriptive issues, whereas etiological factors received lower rates of publication. This may be explained by the fact that changes in the conceptualization of GAD slowed down the progression of researches focussing on the identification of factors implicat
