Adolescent intermittent ethanol exposure produces sex-specific development of functional tolerance to ethanol-induced motor impairment and hypothermia.

Adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) exposure has been shown to attenuate sensitivity to ethanol effects, suggesting tolerance development. The present studies sought to determine whether AIE-exposed male and female rats would develop tolerance to ethanol-induced motor impairment and hypothermia, and to test the effects of AIE on ethanol-metabolizing enzymes in the brain. Adult rats showed motor impairment at 2 g/kg i.p. ethanol, with intoxicated practice attenuating ethanol-induced motor impairment (Experiments 1 & 2). AIE-exposed males, but not females, showed reduced motor impairment when

Patterns of Polydrug Use in Patients Presenting at the Emergency Department with Acute Intoxication.

Studies analyzing the prevalence of associated substance use are limited. Currently, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines polydrug use as the concurrent (simultaneous use) or sequential (use of one drug followed by another) abuse of more than one drug or type of drug, with dependence on at least one. Associated drug consumption can exacerbate the adverse effects and complicate the clinical management of patients. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of polydrug use, excluding tobacco, in patients presenting with acute intoxication in the Emergency Department (ED) of the Clinic

A ten-year analysis of drug-facilitated crimes: Prevalence and characteristics at a tertiary hospital victim protection center.

Drug-Facilitated Crimes (DFCs) involve criminal offenses where the victim's intoxicated state plays a central role. The substances used, often central nervous system depressants, are challenging to detect, leading to a high rate of undiagnosed cases. As a result, DFCs remain a form of violence that is weakly characterized. This cross-sectional study analyzed 1104 violence-related cases presented to the Children and Victim Protection Center (CAVPC) at a tertiary hospital. Of these, 12.2 % were suspected to be DFCs between 2014 and 2019, while 38.5 % were suspected to be DFCs between 2020 and 20

Early-life inflammation increases ethanol consumption in adolescent male mice.

Recent studies have demonstrated that stress during the critical windows of development can evoke a cascade of neurological changes that can result in neuropsychiatric disorders later in life. In this study, we examined the effect of early-life inflammation on ethanol consumption in adolescent mice. C57BL/6J mice were assigned to either the control or Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) group on postnatal day 14 (P14). In the latter group, LPS at a dose of 50 μg/kg was injected intraperitoneally. The mice were weaned at P21, and behavior tests were performed at P45. Ethanol consumption was assessed using

Data mining-based clinical profiles of substance use-related emergency department utilizers.

OBJECTIVE: Substance-use is a prevalent presentation to the emergency department (ED); however, the clinical characterization of patients who are treated and discharged without admission for further treatment is under-investigated. The study aims to define and characterize the clinical profiles of this patient population. METHODS: Patients' presentations were examined by clinical data mining (chart review) of ED records of substance use-related events of individuals discharged without admission for further treatment. Records (N = 199) from three major hospitals in New York City from March and

Burden of motorcyclists without helmets in a state without a universal helmet law: a propensity score analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although helmets are associated with reduction in mortality from motorcycle collisions, many states have failed to adopt universal helmet laws for motorcyclists, in part on the grounds that prior research is limited by study design (historical controls) and confounding variables. The goal of this study was to evaluate the association of helmet use in motorcycle collisions with hospital charges and mortality in trauma patients with propensity score analysis in a state without a universal helmet law. METHODS: Motorcycle collision data from the Arizona State Trauma Registry from 2014

Thrombolytic treatment in stroke mimic, inevitable but fortunately safe: An observational study from Iran.

Background: A number of patients with symptoms of acute cerebral ischemia may have other causes called stroke mimics (SM). The prevalence of SM can be as high as 31% in some reports, and these patients are potentially at the risk of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) therapy and its complications. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of our center's SM (Firoozgar Hospital) among patients who received IVT, their baseline characteristics, final diagnoses, and outcomes. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of all patients who received IVT between June 2015 and May 2018. The followi

Guideline-recommended vs high-dose long-term opioid therapy for chronic noncancer pain is associated with better health outcomes: data from a representative sample of the German population.

Recent evidence-based guidelines for long-term opioid therapy (LTOT) for chronic noncancer pain (CNCP) have defined daily morphine equivalent doses (MEQ/d) that require particular caution. The recommendation for a threshold MEQ/d is based on North American studies that have demonstrated negative health outcomes associated with high-dose LTOT for CNCP. We have conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study using an anonymized German health claims database, including 4,028,618 persons insured by 69 German statutory health insurances, representative of age and sex for the German population in 20

Yield of serious axial injury from pan scans after blunt trauma in haemodynamically stable low-risk trauma patients.

OBJECTIVES: Whole body computed tomography (WBCT) scanning for trauma has gained popularity but its role in low-risk patients is controversial. We aimed to determine the rate of serious axial/truncal injury and emergency intervention in conscious, stable patients undergoing WBCT for blunt trauma in two non-trauma centre EDs in the Victorian trauma system. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study by medical record and radiology report review. Patients were included if they were conscious, haemodynamically stable adults presenting by ambulance and having WBCT scan. Exclusion criteria were age <16 ye

Some aspects of health status of the Gypsy population in Slovakia.

Population of the Gypsy people living currently in Slovakia reaches approximately 400,000 people which represents 7.5% of the total Slovak population. The age structure of the Gypsy population is of a considerably progressive type with a high number of children and very low number of old people. This is due to the high natality and high mortality of Gypsies, whose health status is worse than the health status of the majority population. Gypsy people represent an important "old-new" risk group in case of tuberculosis and a more frequent occurrence of other transmitted diseases is observed in th

Gender differences in drug abuse in the forensic toxicological approach.

Gender differences in substance use/abuse have been the focus of research in the last 15 years. Initiation, use patterns, acceleration of disease course, and help-seeking patterns are known to be influenced by gender differences with regard to biological, psychological, cultural and socioeconomic factors. This paper presents a systematic review of published data on gender differences in the use/abuse of psychoactive and psychotic drugs, focusing on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. The basis for this paper was obtained by Medline searches using the search terms "human" and "gende

Chronic Generalized Harassment During College: Influences on Alcohol and Drug Use.

The experience of chronic generalized harassment from others can have a deleterious impact on individuals over time. Specifically, coping resources may be taxed, resulting in the use of avoidant coping strategies such as substance use. However, little is known about the experience of chronic generalized harassment (e.g., verbal hostility, manipulation by others, exclusion from important events) and its impact on substance use in collegiate populations. In the current study, we examined the latent growth of generalized harassment across the transition from high school to college, whether this g

Gastric lavage guided by ultrathin transnasal esophagogastroduodenoscopy in a life-threatening case of tobacco extract poisoning: a case report.

Nicotine, which is found in tobacco, is one of the most toxic of all known poisons. A 31-year-old woman was brought to our emergency department 2 hours after ingesting a usually fatal dose of a tobacco extract. Although gastric lavage was once commonly used to treat poisoning cases of this type, lavage can lead to such complications as aspiration, hypoxia, oropharyngeal and gastric trauma, and electrolyte disturbances. Recent guidelines have suggested less-aggressive gastric-emptying procedures as initial treatments. Currently, there are no absolute indications for gastric lavage use. The pres
