Nasal obstruction symptom evaluation score outcomes in patients awaiting septoplasty at a tertiary ENT centre.

OBJECTIVE: Nasal septoplasty is one of the most performed procedures within ENT. Nasal obstruction secondary to a deviated nasal septum is the primary indication for functional septoplasty. Since the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, waiting lists have increased and are now long. This study assessed patients on the waiting list for septoplasty and/or inferior turbinate reduction surgery using the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation instrument. METHOD: Patients on our waiting list for septoplasty and/or inferior turbinate reduction surgery were reviewed using a validated patient-reported out

Nasal Septal Abscess Caused by Protrusion of a Dental Implant Into the Nasopalatine Duct: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVE: A nasal septal abscess after placement of a dental implant is seldom seen and is usually caused by an infection around the implant. A septal haematoma following dental implantation leading to septal abscess formation has never been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case of a patient who developed a septal abscess after dental implantation without accompanying signs of infection around the implant. On the computed tomography scan we found the implant protruding the nasopalatine duct which led to bilateral septal hemorrhage, resulting in abscess formation. The patient under

Reconstruction of Nasal Defects With Dermal Skin Substitutes-A Retrospective Study of 36 Defects.

OBJECTIVES: It is uncertain whether dermal regeneration templates (DRTs) are helpful to reconstruct nasal defects. The aim of this study was to assess whether the aesthetic subunits determine the outcome. METHODS: In this unicentric, retrospective study, the surgical procedures and outcomes of patients who received DRTs to reconstruct nasal defects were assessed and compared with the involved aesthetic subunits. RESULTS: DRTs were used for reconstruction of 36 nasal defects in 35 patients with involvement of 76 aesthetic subunits: nasal sidewall (n = 21), nasal ala (n = 13), nasal tip/colume

A case-controlled, retrospective, comparative study on the use of biodegradable synthetic polyurethane foam versus polyvinyl acetate sponge after nasal fracture reduction.

One of the most frequently used packing materials in closed reduction of a nasal bone fracture is the hydroxylated polyvinyl acetate sponge (PVAS; Merocel(®)); however this may cause synechia, epistaxis, and pain. Synthetic polyurethane foam (SPF; Nasopore(®) Forte) has recently been used in septoplasty to prevent synechia or restenosis and haematoma formation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of PVAS and SPF on postoperative appearance and discomfort following the reduction of nasal bone fractures. We retrospectively reviewed all patient questionnaires and medical historie

Intranasal lidocaine plus naphazoline nitrate improves surgical conditions and perioperative analgesia in septorhinoplasty surgery.

BACKGROUND: Septorhinoplasty is a traumatic procedure that is associated with epistaxis and postoperative pain. The primary objective of this randomized double-blind controlled trial was to determine whether intranasal 5% lidocaine plus naphazoline decreases postoperative pain and lessens the use of rescue analgesics. METHODS: After induction of general anesthesia and laryngeal topical anesthesia with 5% lidocaine, 28 adult patients, scheduled to undergo septorhinoplasty, were randomly assigned to one of two groups, either topical intranasal saline 20 ml (control group) or intranasal 5% lidoc

Pre- and postoperative x-ray and computed tomography evaluation in acute nasal fracture.

Between January 1997 and July 2003, 156 acute nasal fractures were treated by closed reduction in Ishikiri-Seiki Hospital. For all patients, x-ray and computed tomography (CT) taken pre- and postoperatively were used to classify fractures and evaluate postoperative conditions. Acute nasal fractures requiring surgery were classified into the following 5 types. Unilateral type (U), bilateral type (B), frontal type (F), laterofrontal type (L), and comminuted type (C). Postoperative conditions were classified as good, fair, or poor. On statistical analysis, it was found that reduction is easier in

Search for the human papillomavirus in nasal polyps, using a polymerase chain reaction-method.

Viral etiology of nasal polyps was postulated as many as 40 years ago, but so far, no study has shown an association or causal relation between any specific virus and nasal polyps. By using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, nasal polyps from both 10 patients with intolerance to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID intolerance) (e.g., Aspirin) and from 10 patients with no history of NSAID intolerance were studied for the presence of papillomavirus DNA. Nasal mucosa from 10 patients who had undergone surgery for septoplasty served as controls. The PCR test used covers approxi

Plastic surgeon's life: marvelous for mind, exhausting for body.

Surgery is accepted as one of the most demanding professions that create both physical and mental strain on the performers. Therefore, the authors aimed to elucidate the mental burden of surgeons, which is dedicated to operative stress. They also tested the hypotheses that participating in surgery creates mental stress on surgeons that leads to cardiovascular changes, and that this stress is more pronounced for actual operators than for first assistants. The method chosen for this purpose was an analysis of heart rate variability. Twelve surgeons (five plastic surgery staff and seven plastic s

COVID-19 and anosmia in Tehran, Iran.

Patients with acute olfactory disorders typically present to the otolaryngologist with both acute hyposmia and less often with anosmia. With the onset of COVID-19 we have noticed an increase in the number of patients who have presented with new onset of complete smell loss to the senior author's practice in Tehran, Iran. This anosmia and the frequency with which patients present is highly unusual. Coronaviruses have been known to cause common cold symptoms. COVID-19 infections have been described as causing more severe respiratory infections and the symptoms reported by authors from Wuhan, Chi
