Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2001eng
OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of middle ear abnormalities in patients with bilateral otosclerosis, which could potentially affect successful stapedectomy, and the rates of success in these patients, including the chance of overclosure in the second ear.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review of operative and audiologic records.
SETTING: Private otology practice.
PATIENTS: One thousand eight hundred patients underwent 3,600 primary stapedectomies for bilateral otosclerosis.
INTERVENTION: Analysis of perioperative and follow-up audiograms with associated operative findings, includi

HYPOTHESIS: Large osteoclast-like cells, labeled by using monoclonal antibodies directed against macrophages, are participating in a bone remodeling process in the rat bullar bone after induced experimental acute otitis media, leading to tympanosclerosis.
BACKGROUND: In humans, tympanosclerosis is a sequale of chronic otitis media. It causes hearing disability, especially if the ossicles or the inner ear are affected. No successful treatment is available. To evaluate the inflammatory stages that may lead to tympanosclerosis, the current study was performed.
METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were

Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2001eng
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate issues pertaining to cochlear implantation in patients with far advanced cochlear otosclerosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort.
SETTING: Tertiary care referral center.
PATIENTS: Eight adult patients (18 years of age or older) referred for management of profound hearing loss, the cause of which was determined to be otosclerosis.
INTERVENTION: Cochlear implantation with multichannel cochlear implant device.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Benefit from cochlear implant as measured by CID sentence scores, incidence and management of facial nerve stimulation, and technical issu

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the clinical presentation and natural history of chronic myringitis (CM).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Chronic myringitis is defined as a loss of tympanic membrane epithelium for >1 month without disease within the tympanic cavity. Seven hundred fifty patient records were reviewed to determine the prevalence of CM in an academic otology practice. The records of 40 patients (45 ears) with CM seen between 1995 and 1999 inclusive were reviewed.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The series was reviewe

Otology & neurotology : official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society [and] European Academy of Otology and Neurotology2001eng
OBJECTIVE: To review current knowledge of the pathophysiology of otosclerosis and to review hypotheses for the amelioration of this disease.
DATA SOURCES: Review of the literature and experimental observations by the authors.
CONCLUSIONS: Otosclerosis is a localized disease of bone remodeling within the otic capsule of the human temporal bone. Unlike other similar bone diseases, it does not occur outside of the temporal bone. These lesions seem to begin by resorption of stable otic capsule bone in adults, followed by a reparative phase with bone deposition. There are clearly genetic factors

OBJECTIVE: Sudden hearing loss is a frightening symptom that often prompts an urgent or emergent visit to a health care provider. It is frequently but not universally accompanied by tinnitus and/or vertigo. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss affects 5 to 27 per 100,000 people annually, with about 66,000 new cases per year in the United States. This guideline update provides evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients who present with sudden hearing loss. It focuses on sudden sensorineural hearing loss in adult patients aged ≥18 years and primarily on

This article provides an overview of rare orbital diseases. Congenital malformations, inflammatory diseases, benign and malignant neoplasias are described. Although it represents a relatively small area of the body the orbit contains multiple different tissues. Therefore, a great variety of diseases can be found within the orbital space. That is the reason, why both the completeness and the level of detail in the description of particular diseases must be somewhat limited. Nevertheless, clinical manifestations, important aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies, and, when specific data are a

BACKGROUND & IMPORTANCE: This patient and public-involved systematic review originally focused on arachnoiditis, a supposedly rare "iatrogenic chronic meningitis" causing permanent neurologic damage and intractable pain. We sought to prove disease existence, causation, symptoms, and inform future directions. After 63 terms for the same pathology were found, the study was renamed Diseases of the Leptomeninges (DLMs). We present results that nullify traditional clinical thinking about DLMs, answer study questions, and create a unified path forward.
METHODS: The prospective PRISMA protocol is pu
