SWFT-Net: a deep learning framework for efficient fine-tuning spot weights towards adaptive proton therapy.

Objective. One critical task for adaptive proton therapy is how to perform spot weight re-tuning and reoptimize plan, both of which are time-consuming and labor intensive. We proposed a deep learning framework (SWFT-Net) to speed up such a task, a starting point for us to move towards online adaptive proton therapy.Approach. For a H&N patient case, a reference intensity modulated proton therapy plan was generated. For data augmentation, spot weights were modified to generate three datasets (DS10, DS30, DS50), corresponding to different levels of weight adjustment. For each dataset, the samples

Learning properties of quantum states without the IID assumption.

We develop a framework for learning properties of quantum states beyond the assumption of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) input states. We prove that, given any learning problem (under reasonable assumptions), an algorithm designed for i.i.d. input states can be adapted to handle input states of any nature, albeit at the expense of a polynomial increase in training data size (aka sample complexity). Importantly, this polynomial increase in sample complexity can be substantially improved to polylogarithmic if the learning algorithm in question only requires non-adaptive, single

Clutter filters adapted to tissue motion in ultrasound color flow imaging.

The quality of ultrasound color flow images is highly dependent on sufficient attenuation of the clutter signals originating from stationary and slowly moving tissue. Without sufficient clutter rejection, the detection of low velocity blood flow will be poor, and the velocity estimates will have a large bias. In some situations, e.g., when imaging the coronary arteries or when the operator moves the probe in search for small vessels, there is considerable movement of tissue. It has been suggested that clutter rejection can be improved by mixing down the signal with an estimate of the mean freq

DYNAMIC CLASSIFICATION OF LATENT DISEASE PROGRESSION WITH AUXILIARY SURROGATE LABELS.

Disease progression prediction based on patients' evolving health information is challenging when true disease states are unknown due to diagnostic capabilities or high costs. For example, the absence of gold-standard neurological diagnoses hinders distinguishing Alzheimer's disease (AD) from related conditions such as AD-related dementias (ADRDs), including Lewy body dementia (LBD). Combining temporally dependent surrogate labels and health markers may improve disease prediction. However, existing literature models informative surrogate labels and observed variables that reflect the underlyin

Machine learning based tuberculosis (ML-TB) health predictor model: early TB health disease prediction with ML models for prevention in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the top infectious killers in the world and a prominent fatal disease in developing countries. This study proposes a prototypical solution to early prevention of TB based on its primary symptoms, signs, and risk factors, implemented by means of machine learning (ML) predictive algorithms. Further novelty of the study lies in the uniqueness of patient dataset collected from three top-ranked hospitals of Sindh, Pakistan, via a self-administered survey patient-records that comprises a set of questions asked by the doctors treating TB patients in real-t

Real-Time Classification of Bladder Events for Effective Diagnosis and Treatment of Urinary Incontinence.

Diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunction with urodynamics has historically relied on data acquired from multiple sensors using nonphysiologically fast cystometric filling. In addition, state-of-the-art neuromodulation approaches to restore bladder function could benefit from a bladder sensor for closed-loop control, but a practical sensor and automated data analysis are not available. We have developed an algorithm for real-time bladder event detection based on a single in situ sensor, making it attractive for both extended ambulatory bladder monitoring and closed-loop control of stimulati

Laparoscopic Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Carcinomatosis of Gastric Adenocarcinoma Origin.

The use of heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in conjunction with cytoreductive surgery has been gaining increasing traction in treating gastric adenocarcinoma with metastasis to the peritoneum in recent years. The addition of laparoscopic HIPEC (LS-HIPEC) to these treatment algorithms has increased the flexibility and adaptability of HIPEC integrating into treatment sequencing, allowing for iterative protocols of LS-HIPEC prior to cytoreduction as neoadjuvant treatment, as well as in the palliation of patients with unresectable disease and uncontrolled ascites. As the use of HIPEC in

Refining the Clinical Pathway for Nasotracheal Intubation: An Updated Decision Making Algorithm.

Nasotracheal Intubation (NTI) is a common route of airway management in many situations. Over the years, numerous techniques and approaches have been described in performing NTI safely and effectively, including many innovative techniques being published in recent years. However, there hasn't been a summary of the recent approaches to NTI, especially in an easy, clinically applicable decision making format. In fact, the last algorithmic approach to nasal intubation in the literature was published in 2008. This comprehensive review details an updated analysis of NTI techniques along with a new

Cross-domain policy adaptation with dynamics alignment.

The implementation of robotic reinforcement learning is hampered by problems such as an unspecified reward function and high training costs. Many previous works have used cross-domain policy transfer to obtain the policy of the problem domain. However, these researches require paired and aligned dynamics trajectories or other interactions with the environment. We propose a cross-domain dynamics alignment framework for the problem domain policy acquisition that can transfer the policy trained in the source domain to the problem domain. Our framework aims to learn dynamics alignment across two d

A contour property based approach to segment nuclei in cervical cytology images.

BACKGROUND: Segmentation of nuclei in cervical cytology pap smear images is a crucial stage in automated cervical cancer screening. The task itself is challenging due to the presence of cervical cells with spurious edges, overlapping cells, neutrophils, and artifacts. METHODS: After the initial preprocessing steps of adaptive thresholding, in our approach, the image passes through a convolution filter to filter out some noise. Then, contours from the resultant image are filtered by their distinctive contour properties followed by a nucleus size recovery procedure based on contour average inte

Adaptive computation of approximate entropy and its application in integrative analysis of irregularity of heart rate variability and intracranial pressure signals.

The present study introduces an adaptive calculation of approximate entropy (ApEn) by exploiting sample-by-sample construction and update of nearest neighborhoods in an n-dimensional space. The algorithm is first validated with a standard numerical test set. It is then applied to electrocardiogram R wave interval (RR) and beat-to-beat intracranial pressure signals recorded from 12 patients undergoing normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis. The ApEn time series are further processed using the causal coherence analysis to study the interaction between ICP and RR interval. Numerical validation d

Online adaptive assistance control in robot-based neurorehabilitation therapy.

Repetitive and task specific robot-based rehabilitation has been proved to be effective for motor recovery over time. During a therapy, the task should improve subject's impaired movements, but also enhance their efforts for a more effective recovery. This requires an accurate tuning of the task difficulty, which should be tailored directly to the patient. In this work, we propose a system for real-time assistance adaptation based on online performance evaluation for post-stroke subjects. In particular, the aim of the system is to implement the "assist-as-needed" paradigm based on actual patie
