Personal Development of Adolescent Peer Leaders of a Whole-of-School Physical Activity Programme: Expectations Versus Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The Active School Flag (ASF) programme for second-level schools in Ireland is a whole-of-school physical activity initiative involving adolescents as peer leaders. This study explores how the peer leadership of this programme influenced adolescents' skills, competencies, perceived health, and school experience. Based on situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT), we examined how outcomes met peer leaders' expectations as this can influence motivation for their peer leader role. METHODS: Data from peer leaders' focus groups and teacher interviews conducted at beginning and end of acad

Puberty timing and cognitive functioning: insights from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study and Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: Early puberty timing is linked to altered neurodevelopment and adverse mental health outcomes, yet its relationship with cognitive functioning remains unclear. We examined the effects of puberty timing across multiple cognitive domains. METHODS: In 10,722 participants from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, we assessed associations between puberty timing, operationalized using sex specific logistic growth curve models, and performance on six cognitive tasks at baseline, 2-year, and 4-year follow-ups. Linear-mixed regression models were calculated separate

Electrophysiological reactivity to emotional images and targets predicts the development of substance use disorders in adolescent girls.

A blunted P300, an event-related potential indicator of attentional processes, and blunted late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential indicator of elaborative processing, confer risk for development of substance use disorders (SUD) in adolescents. However, few studies have examined whether electrophysiological reactivity to emotional stimuli predicts development of SUD in adolescents. It is also unclear whether these neural responses are a risk factor of proximal, precocious development of SUD versus distal SUD later in adolescence. The present study examined whether electrophys

Development of a clinical decision-support tool for management of adolescent knee pain (The MAP-Knee tool).

BACKGROUND: Adolescent knee pain was historically viewed as a self-limiting condition. Still, it may severely impact health-related quality of life and physical activity, and almost half of adolescents may continue to experience pain into adulthood. Currently, no tool is available to support the consultation and shared decision-making process when an adolescent suffering from non-traumatic knee pain presents at clinical practice. By supporting shared decision-making and tailoring management strategies, such a tool could optimize treatment delivery and improve the prognosis of this common condi

Association Study on Multi-Timepoint DNA Methylation Levels of Serotonin Transporter Gene and Adolescent Psychological-Behavioral Development.

AIMS: This study aimed to investigate whether multi-timepoint DNA methylation levels at the SLC6A4 gene during early adolescence are associated with psychopathological and behavioral clusters, SLC6A4 encodes the serotonin transporter, which regulates the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. The clusters were previously identified by deep learning analysis of self- and parental-report questionnaires from participants in the Tokyo Teen Cohort (TTC) study in Japan. METHODS: We extracted genomic DNA from saliva samples of a subset of TTC participants (N = 122) at ages 11, 13, and 15.

Ruptured Appendicitis Leading to Development of a Tubo-Ovarian Abscess in a Non-sexually Active Adolescent Patient.

Tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOA) are commonly associated with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) caused by sexually transmitted infections (STI). There have been several reports of adolescent non-sexually active female patients diagnosed with TOAs. Symptoms of TOAs often mimic appendicitis and have often been diagnosed as such. We present a case of a 12-year-old non-sexually active adolescent who was initially diagnosed with ruptured appendicitis and found to have a TOA engulfing the appendix.

Dental Age Estimation based on Development Dental Atlas Assessment in a Child/Adolescent Population with Systemic Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Forensic estimation of chronological age has played an increasingly important role as part of cadaver identification, and also in living individuals due to the phenomenon of immigration and sexual abuse of undocumented trafficked children. OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to validate the already used dental mineralization and eruption atlas in normal children and adolescent population in estimating chronological age in a young population, particularly those with special needs, majority of them with systemic diseases. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A sample of 163 orthopantomograms from

Abuse Experiences of Family Members, Child Maltreatment, and the Development of Sex Offending Among Incarcerated Adolescent Males.

Child sexual abuse is considered a risk factor for the development of sexual offending in adolescence. Beyond this, comparisons of the risk factor profiles between adolescent sex offenders (ASOs) and adolescent non-sex offenders (ANSOs) have uncovered minimal differences. However, differences between ASOs and ANSOs in terms of patterns in the abuse histories of their family members have rarely been studied. The aim in the current study was to retrospectively examine histories of abuse among family members of ASOs compared with ANSOs to determine whether and how these were related to youth abus

Genetic and environmental influences on thin-ideal internalization across puberty and preadolescent, adolescent, and young adult development.

OBJECTIVE: Mean-levels of thin-ideal internalization increase during adolescence and pubertal development, but it is unknown whether these phenotypic changes correspond to developmental changes in etiological (i.e., genetic and environmental) risk. Given the limited knowledge on risk for thin-ideal internalization, research is needed to guide the identification of specific types of risk factors during critical developmental periods. The present twin study examined genetic and environmental influences on thin-ideal internalization across adolescent and pubertal development. METHOD: Participant

Fetoplacental growth and vascular development in overnourished adolescent sheep at day 50, 90 and 130 of gestation.

To establish the basis for altered placental development and function previously observed at late gestation, fetoplacental growth and placental vascular development were measured at three stages of gestation in a nutritional paradigm of compromised pregnancy. Singleton pregnancies to a single sire were established and thereafter adolescent ewes were offered an optimal control (C) or a high (H) dietary intake. At day 50, the H group had elevated maternal insulin and amniotic glucose, whereas mass of the fetus and placenta were unaltered. At day 90, the H group exhibited elevated maternal insuli

Development and psychometric validation of the Adolescent Self-Harm Risk Assessment (ASRA) Scale: A multi-dimensional approach.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent self-harm has become an increasingly severe public health issue worldwide. However, existing assessment tools mainly rely on self-reporting and fail to effectively capture the multidimensional and systemic risk factors. This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive self-harm risk assessment tool (ASRA), integrating ecological systems theory and the cumulative ecological risk model, to fill the gaps in current assessment tools. METHODS: Through an extensive literature review, two rounds of expert consultations (Delphi method), and a pre-survey, we developed the

A Formal Needs Assessment in Palliative Care Clinic Development for Adolescent/Young Adults (AYAs) With Neuromuscular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Although medical advancements have prolonged survival in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), it remains a life-limiting diagnosis with numerous challenges. Palliative care is recommended for all patients with DMD, but there is no consensus on the recommended outpatient care model. Our initial objective was to establish a palliative care clinic for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with DMD. METHODS: We used the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) Community-Based Palliative Care Needs Assessment and Decision-Making Tool to identify a patient population, create structured surve

Impact of Pre-Gestational BMI and Gestational Weight Gain on Fetal Development Outcomes in Adolescent Pregnant Women.

Background. Gestational weight gain (GWG) constitutes an essential aspect of the gestational process. Due to factors such as pregestational body mass index (BMI), nutritional intake, level of physical activity, and psychological aspects, the recommended GWG may not be achieved, leading to adverse neonatal outcomes. Adolescents, due to their physiological and mental developmental stage, are at a higher risk of inappropriate GWG. Our aim is to highlight the importance of GWG in our population and to determine the correlation with perinatal outcomes. Methods. Pregnant adolescents who attended a t

Development and validation of machine learning-based models for prediction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A retrospective study.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) can cause abnormal body posture, which has a negative impact on the overall posture. Therefore, timely prevention and early treatment are extremely important. The purpose of this study is to build an early warning model of AIS risk, so as to provide guidance for accurately identifying early high-risk AIS children and adolescents. We conducted a retrospective study of 1732 children and adolescents with or without AIS who underwent physical examination in Longgang District Central Hospital of Shenzhen (LDCHS queue) from January 2019 to October 2022 and 1581

Association of adverse prenatal exposure burden with child psychopathology in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous adverse prenatal exposures have been individually associated with risk for psychiatric illness in the offspring. However, such exposures frequently co-occur, raising questions about their cumulative impact. We evaluated effects of cumulative adverse prenatal exposure burden on psychopathology risk in school-aged children. METHODS: Using baseline surveys from the U.S.-based Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (7,898 non-adopted, unrelated children from 21 sites, age 9-10, and their primary caregivers), we examined 8 retrospectively-reported adverse prena
