A comparison of alcohol and commercial tobacco use in populous American Indian/Alaska Native states.

BACKGROUND: Modern research suggests that the racial influence on smoking and drinking behaviors may not be as prevalent as once thought. This study utilizes national survey data to compare binge drinking and commercial cigarette smoking behaviors between American Indians/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) and non-Hispanic Whites in the five most populous AI/AN U.S. states. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2018 to 2022; White (n=79,405), AI/AN (n=11,007). Data analyses include frequency statistics, followed by two model evaluations comparing ma

Screening for Alcohol Use and Brief Counseling of Adults - 13 States and the District of Columbia, 2017.

Binge drinking* is a leading preventable public health problem. From 2006 to 2010, binge drinking contributed to approximately 49,000 annual deaths resulting from acute conditions (e.g., injuries and violence) (1). Binge drinking also increases the risk for adverse health conditions, including some chronic diseases (e.g., breast cancer) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (2). In 2004, 2013, and again in 2018, for all U.S. adults aged ≥18 years in primary care, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended alcohol screening and brief intervention (alcohol SBI) or counseling for

Alcohol consumption, drinking pattern, and self-reported visual impairment.

PURPOSE: To examine whether alcohol drinking status and drinking pattern are associated with self-reported visual impairment. METHODS: We used data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a state-based telephone health survey conducted by random-digit dialing among non-institutionalized US adults. The Visual Impairment and Access to Eye Care module was implemented among 42, 713 adults aged 50 years and older in 2005 and 2006. Visual impairment was defined as any degree of difficulty experienced in recognizing a friend across the street or reading print in newspaper, magazine, rec

Job stressors and the incidence of alcohol-related outcomes: prospective findings from the national French ESPS survey.

BACKGROUND: Prospective studies are lacking on the associations between job stressors and alcohol-related outcomes in the working population. The objectives were to explore the prospective associations of these exposures, including changes in exposure, with three alcohol-related outcomes. METHODS: The study relied on the prospective data of the national French ESPS survey (Health, health care and insurance survey) collected among a sample of 2080 workers in 2010 and 2014. Ten job stressors, derived from the job strain and effort-reward imbalance models, in 2010 (baseline) and changes in these

Holiday Heart Syndrome: A Literature Review.

Holiday Heart Syndrome (HHS) is a condition characterised by the development of atrial fibrillation (AF) and other tachyarrhythmias following episodes of binge drinking in individuals without pre-existing cardiac disease. As the binge drinking rate rises worldwide, it is increasingly important to understand the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical significance of this syndrome. The objective of this literature review is to synthesise current evidence on the relationship between binge alcohol drinking and AF, exploring the underlying mechanisms and risk factors associated with HHS. A lit

Alcohol Use and Transactional Sex among Women in South Africa: Results from a Nationally Representative Survey.

BACKGROUND: Transactional sex is a risk factor for HIV infection. Alcohol use may increase the risk of transactional sex. No nationally-representative studies have examined the relationship between multiple dimensions of alcohol use and transactional sex in women in South Africa. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between alcohol dependence, binge drinking and frequency of drinking in the past month and transactional sex in adult women in South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using multi-stage, cluster sampling collected data from a nationally representative sample

Evening binge alcohol disrupts cardiovagal tone and baroreflex function during polysomnographic sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Binge alcohol consumption is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The effects of evening binge alcohol consumption (i.e. 4-5 beverages within 2 h) on the vagal components of HRV and cardiovagal baroreflex sensitivity (cvBRS) during sleep remain largely equivocal. The present study examined the effects of evening binge alcohol consumption on nocturnal cardiac vagal tone and baroreflex sensitivity during stage N2, slow wave (SWS), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. We hypothesized that evening binge drinking would reduce HRV and cvBRS in each sleep stage. METHODS: F

Nicotine Vaping and Co-occurring Substance Use Among Adolescents in the United States from 2017-2019.

Background: The use of electronic cigarettes (or "vaping") among adolescents remains a public health concern given exposure to harmful substances, plus potential association with cannabis and alcohol. Understanding vaping as it intersects with combustible cigarette use and other substance use can inform nicotine prevention efforts. Methods: Data were drawn from 51,872 US adolescents (grades 8, 10, 12, years: 2017-2019) from Monitoring the Future. Multinomial logistic regression analyses assessed links of past 30-day nicotine use (none, smoking-only, vaping-only, and any smoking plus vaping) wi

You Didn't Drink During Pregnancy, Did You?

BACKGROUND: Accurate characterization of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is challenging due to inconsistent use of screening questionnaires in routine prenatal care and substantial underreporting due to stigma associated with alcohol use in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to identify self-report tools that are efficient in accurately characterizing PAE. METHODS: Participants meeting eligibility criteria for mild-to-moderate PAE were recruited into the University of New Mexico Ethanol, Neurodevelopment, Infant and Child Health cohort (N = 121) and followed prospectively. Alcohol use during pregnancy: the impact of social determinants of health on alcohol consumption among pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: There is no safe amount or time of alcohol consumption during pregnancy; however, many women drink while pregnant placing themselves and their fetuses at risk for alcohol-related health complications. Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) impact alcohol use during pregnancy. Understanding the impact of SDoH across pregnancy will elucidate important information to reduce rates of prenatal alcohol exposure. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the National Survey of Drug Use and Health from 2009 to 2019 was used to explore the impact of SDoH on alcohol use across pregnancy. The study a

Bone density in relation to alcohol intake among men and women in the United States.

UNLABELLED: Studies of postmenopausal women have shown a positive association between BMD and alcohol intake. We found that BMD was higher in men, and possibly postmenopausal women, who drank alcohol compared with those who abstained. Drinking alcohol, but not binge drinking, may benefit bone health of men and postmenopausal women. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporotic fractures account for over 2.5 million physician visits annually for persons ages >or=45 years in the United States. Studies of postmenopausal women show a positive association between bone mineral density (BMD) and alcohol intake, but fo

Peer effects on risky behaviors: new evidence from college roommate assignments.

Social scientists continue to devote considerable attention to spillover effects for risky behaviors because of the important policy implications and the persistent challenges in identifying unbiased causal effects. We use the natural experiment of assigned college roommates to estimate peer effects for several measures of health risks: binge drinking, smoking, illicit drug use, gambling, having multiple sex partners, suicidal ideation, and non-suicidal self-injury. We find significant peer effects for binge drinking but little evidence of effects for other outcomes, although there is tentativ

The impact of partner psychological abuse on health behaviors and health status in college women.

Previous research documents increased health problems, somatic complaints, and negative health behaviors among victims of physical and sexual violence. This study extended existing literature by examining the unique effects of partner psychological abuse on physical health and the moderating effects of approach and avoidance coping strategies. Psychological abuse was positively related to illegal drug use, physical and role limitations, negative health perceptions, and cognitive impairment in college women even after controlling for physical victimization. Psychological abuse was not related t

Adolescent drinking causes a loss of aspartoacylase-expressing oligodendrocytes and hypomyelination of anterior cingulate and corpus callosum axons in male mice, but not females.

Adolescent binge drinking is a strong predictor of alcohol use disorder and related mental health outcomes in adulthood, which may be due to disruptions in myelination during this dynamic period of brain development. White matter expansion in frontal regions during adolescence is essential for mature decision-making and stress regulation, yet the cellular mechanisms by which alcohol impairs myelination remain poorly understood. Multi-label immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy were used to visualize proteins in oligodendrocyte lineage cells and myelin ensheathment of axons in the anterior

Veteran status and alcohol use in men in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare patterns of alcohol use between male veterans and nonveterans. METHODS: Data came from the 2004 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a U.S. national telephone survey using stratified random sampling. Outcomes were 30-day alcohol use, binge drinking (5+ drinks on one occasion), and heavy drinking (2+ drinks per day). Age-stratified weighted regression analyses compared men who were veterans (n = 36,874) to those who were not (n = 77,056), and veterans who used Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services in the past year (n = 7,606) to veterans w

Patterns and predictors of high-intensity drinking and implications for intervention.

Efforts to intervene with subgroups at particularly high risk for alcohol use require information on factors that differentiate drinking intensity levels. This article summarizes existing research and provides new findings on sociodemographics and risk factors that differentiate high-intensity drinking (HID) to provide context for developing and delivering interventions for the highest-risk drinkers. Cross-sectional data were obtained in 2019 from participants who reported past 30-day alcohol use in 2018 as part of the nationally representative 12th grade Monitoring the Future study. Among pas

Repeated cycles of binge-like ethanol consumption and abstinence alter neuropeptide mRNA in prefrontal and insular cortex, amygdala, and lateral hypothalamus of male and female C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is a risky pattern of alcohol (ethanol) consumption associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including the development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Many neuropeptide systems are thought to become dysregulated in AUD; however, whether repeated cycles of binge-like ethanol consumption and abstinence following binge-like drinking alter neuropeptide mRNA in key brain regions, such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), insular cortex (IC), amygdala, and lateral hypothalamus (LH), remains unknown. METHODS: Male and female mice underwent 0, 3, or 6 cycles of bin

Readiness to change alcohol use after trauma.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the leading risk factor for severe injury. This study examined whether patients hospitalized after an alcohol-related injury are motivated to change alcohol use, thus making them potential candidates for brief motivational interventions. METHODS: Fifty patients hospitalized in a Level I trauma center, admitted with a positive blood alcohol concentration, were assessed for motivation to change alcohol-related behavior using validated questionnaires. Information was gathered regarding level of alcohol use, consequences of use, and motivation to change drinking habits. Dem

Alcohol Drinking Patterns and Laboratory Indices of Health: Does Type of Alcohol Preferred Make a Difference?

Although excessive alcohol consumption is a highly prevalent public health problem the data on the associations between alcohol consumption and health outcomes in individuals preferring different types of alcoholic beverages has remained unclear. We examined the relationships between the amounts and patterns of drinking with the data on laboratory indices of liver function, lipid status and inflammation in a national population-based health survey (FINRISK). Data on health status, alcohol drinking, types of alcoholic beverages preferred, body weight, smoking, coffee consumption and physical ac

Alcohol consumption, blood pressure, and the risk of stroke.

A synergistic effect of alcohol and hypertension has been suggested to increase the risk for stroke. However, the contribution of alcohol-induced hypertension to stroke morbidity and mortality may be greater than observed, because the effects of different drinking patterns have not been separately investigated. Alcohol-induced transient peaks in systolic blood pressure may predispose to stroke. Recent studies have measured time trends of blood pressure elevations in relation to alcohol consumption. They found a significant morning surge in blood pressure, which was related to alcohol intake in
