Efficacy of marinades against Listeria monocytogenes cells in suspension or associated with green shell mussels (Perna canaliculus).

In order to determine the listericidal efficacies of three marinades used in the production of marinated green shell mussels (Perna canaliculus), decimal reduction times (D values) were determined for a mixture of seven strains of Listeria monocytogenes exposed to marinades in the presence and absence of mussels. With an acetic acid (1.5%, wt/vol) marinade, calculated D values in the presence and absence of mussels were 77.3 and 33.3 h, respectively. Likewise, for an acetic acid (0.75%)-lactic acid (0.75%) marinade and an acetic acid (1.5%)-Glucono Delta-Lactone (0.2%)-based marinade, the D va

Tetracyclines Removal from Aquaculture Effluents by Waste Mussel Shells After Thermal Modification.

As a class of low-cost and broad-spectrum antibiotics in wide aquaculture use, residues of tetracyclines (TCs) are imperiling aquatic organisms and public health worldwide, leading to a high demand for TC removal from the aquaculture environment. In addition, considerable consumption of thick-shell mussels generates massive mussel shell waste, and their treatment has been an economic and environmental issue. Herein, a low-cost and high-efficiency mussel shells-based material was successfully prepared for TC removal by thermal modification of shell waste of Mytilus coruscus. Morphological and s

Long term study (2012-2021) on Okadaic acid and Yessotoxins in Northwestern Adriatic Sea mussels (Italy). The role of inland rainfall in the dynamics of contamination events.

The Northwestern Adriatic Sea is highly exploited for mussel farming although it is periodically affected by Harmful Algal Bloom. In the last 30 years Okadaic acid (OA) and Yessotoxins (YTXs) predominated the mussels' toxin profile with serious threat to public health and damage to the shellfish industry. The Official Control Authorities address this issue by monitoring Marine Biotoxins in shellfish and toxic phytoplankton in seawater with good results in terms of safeguarding public health but with poor forecasting power. This work reports ten years (2012-2021) monitoring of OA and YTXs in mu

Beyond Genetic Indicators: How Reproductive Mode and Hybridisation Challenge Freshwater Mussel Conservation.

Genetic diversity is a fundamental aspect of biodiversity, yet it is rarely assessed and monitored in conservation practice. Unionid freshwater mussels exemplify the dramatic loss of biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems, yet genomic data for these ecologically important species remain scarce. Here, we conducted a high-resolution population genomics study of all Anodonta species in Switzerland, with a focus on two species with contrasting reproductive strategies. After generating draft genomes of the hermaphroditic Anodonta cygnea and the gonochoric Anodonta anatina, we performed whole-genome

Estrogen receptor knockdown suggests its role in gonadal development regulation in Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum.

The estrogen receptor (ER), a ligand-dependent transcription factor, is critical for vertebrate reproduction. However, its role in bivalves is not well understood, with ongoing debates regarding its function in regulating reproduction similarly to vertebrates. To investigate ER's function, we conducted a 21-day RNA interference experiment focusing on its role in gonadal development in bivalves. Histological analyses revealed that ER inhibition significantly suppressed ovarian development in females and, conversely, promoted gonadal development in males. Additionally, levels of 17β-estrogen (E2

Accumulation of metal(loid)s in the digestive gland of the mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788: A reliable detection of historical freshwater contamination.

The possible influence of historical contamination of water/sediments on the metal(loid) bioaccumulation in the digestive gland of mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788, from two differently contaminated sites at the Mrežnica River was studied in three seasons. The first data for this species on total/cytosolic concentrations of 27 (non)essential elements were obtained by HR ICP-MS. Higher bioaccumulation was observed at the historically contaminated site, with several nonessential elements (Bi, Cs, Pb, Sb, Tl, U) found in 5-6 times higher concentrations compared to the reference site. Although

Assisted natural recovery of hypersaline sediments: salinity thresholds for the establishment of a community of bioturbating organisms.

Hypersaline sediments derived from poor land management or the decommissioning of large-scale salt production contribute to the long-term degradation of aquatic environments. Obstacles impeding remediation of these environments include salt crusts restricting benthic recolonisation, hypersalinity-induced toxicity to organisms, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles. Remediation often focuses on engineered solutions, despite sediment-biota interactions often playing a crucial role in improving long-term remediation and restoration of contaminated areas. The presence of extensive bioturbating c

Lectin CGL from the sea mussel Crenomytilus grayanus induces Burkitt's lymphoma cells death via interaction with surface glycan.

Marine organisms are rich sources of lectins. Lectins are able to bind specifically and reversibly to different types of carbohydrates or glycoproteins. The present study reports the evaluation of glycan binding profile and anti-tumor potential of lectin CGL from the sea mussel Crenomytilus grayanus. Glycan array assay revealed that CGL was able to bind both α and β anomer of galactose, but interaction with the αGal-terminated glycans was stronger. Analysis of most common glycan motifs for CGL showed high affinity to Galα1-4Galβ1-4GlcNAc motif similar to globotriose structure (Gb3: Galα1-4Galβ

Metal and metallothionein distribution in different tissues of the Mediterranean clam Venerupis philippinarum during copper treatment and detoxification.

Filter feeding animals can accumulate large amount of contaminants in their body through particles filtered from seawater. In particular, copper is interesting since it plays important roles as co-factor of numerous proteins but its toxicity is well established, also because it can readily generate free radicals or oxidize cellular components through their redox activity. Its availability is tightly regulated within cells: it is immediately transferred to metallothionein (MT) that in turn provides efficient and specific mechanisms for its intracellular storage and transport. The aim of this st

Effect of a polymetallic mixture on metal accumulation and metallothionein response in the clam Ruditapes decussatus.

The toxic effects of metals are related to changes in natural physiological and biochemical processes in organisms, which are not easily detected. Marine invertebrates developed strategies to survive in the presence of toxic metal levels, by the removal of these compounds from the soluble fraction of the cell through different processes, including the synthesis of metallothionein (MT). To better understand the effect of Cd, Cu and Zn in MT response it is important to consider that in their natural environment these metals are normally mixed. The exposure to a metal mixture result in toxicologi

Experimental study on the bioaccumulation of oxytetracycline and oxolinic acid by the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). An evaluation of its ability to bio-monitor antibiotics in the marine environment.

The ability of blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) to act as a potential antibiotic bioindicator in marine waters was experimentally tested by the study of the kinetics of two veterinary antibiotics (oxolinic acid: OA and oxytetracycline: OTC). Antibiotic uptake was fast in the soft parts of the mussels. OA was quickly eliminated while OTC was released more slowly (half-life in viscera=3.9 days). OA and OTC were preferentially accumulated in gills and in viscera, respectively. Bio-accumulation factors were low (maximum: 2 for OTC in viscera) in accordance with the low K(ow)s. It was assumed that the

Simultaneous determination of mono-, di- and tributyltin in environmental samples using isotope dilution gas chromatography mass spectrometry.

The development of a rapid, precise and accurate speciation method for the simultaneous determination of mono-, di- and tributyltin in environmental samples is described. The method is based on using isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with electron ionization, a widely used technique in routine testing laboratories. A mixed spike containing (119)Sn-enriched monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) was used for the isotope dilution of the samples. Five molecular ions were monitored for each analyte, corresponding to the (116)Sn, (117)Sn, (118)Sn, (11

Sediment geochemical controls on CD, CR, and ZN assmilation by the clam Ruditapes philippinarum.

Several important sediment geochemical factors (particle size, contact time, artificial sediment composition, acid volatile sulfide, and pure inorganic particles coated or uncoated with humic acid) were examined for their influences on the assimilation of Cd, Cr, and Zn in the marine clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Metal desorption and phase speciation were concurrently measured for these particles. Differences in particle size did not significantly affect metal assimilation. Increasing contact time with sediments decreased assimilation by the clams of Cr and Zn, but not of Cd. A significant pos

Specific protein phosphorylation occurs in molluscan red blood cell ghosts in response to hypoosmotic stress.

The regulation of cellular volume upon exposure to hypoosmotic stress is accomplished by specific plasma membrane permeability changes that allow the efflux of certain intracellular solutes (osmolytes). The mechanism of this membrane permeability regulation is not understood; however, previous data implicate Ca2+ as an important component in the response. The regulation of protein phosphorylation is a pervasive aspect of cellular physiology that is often Ca2+ dependent. Therefore, we tested for osmotically induced protein phosphorylation as a possible mechanism by which Ca2+ may mediate osmoti

Mutually reinforcing removal of uranium(VI) and nitrate enabled by pH-buffered nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube-calcium phosphate derived from corn stover and mussel shells.

The coexistence of uranium(VI) (U(VI)) and nitrate (NO3-) in uranium mining wastewater poses significant environmental risks, as NO3- enhances U(VI) mobility in groundwater. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (BCNTs) derived from corn stover were hybridized with calcium phosphate (CaP) sourced from mussel shells to prepare BCNTs-CaP-1 and BCNTs-CaP-2. Structural and compositional characterizations confirmed successful CaP immobilization, well-maintained tubular morphology, and abundant pyrrolic-N active sites. Owing to the reversible transformation of H2PO4-, BCNTs-CaP-1 possesses excelle

Mussel-Inspired Membrane Encapsulation Strategy for Developing Long-Acting Glucose-Responsive Injectable Insulin Crystals.

Inspired by the catechol-lysine synergy and oxidative cross-linking mechanisms in mussel adhesion, we have synthesized poly-l-lysine (PLL) modified with 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) to encapsulate insulin crystals. Upon oxidation, a dense, stable, and uniform membrane with nanochannels is in situ formed on the surface of insulin crystals, achieving high drug encapsulation efficiency, loading content, and sustained release performance. After further functionalization with 4-carboxy-3-fluorophenylboronic acid (FPBA), the membrane can mediate insulin release in a glucose-responsive mann
