This review underlines the importance of indoor contamination as a pathway of human exposure to hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). There is ample evidence of substantial contamination of indoor dust with these chemicals and that their concentrations in indoor air exceed substantially those outdoors. Studies examining the relationship between body burden and exposure via indoor dust are inconsistent; while some indicate a link between body burdens and PBDE and HBCD exposure via dust ingestion, others find no correlation.

In the present study, we demonstrate that male scid/scid mice have higher adult worm burdens than do female scid/scid mice following equal challenge doses of infective Brugia malayi L3 larvae. Gonadectomy of four week old immature mice has no effect on worm burden in either sex, suggesting that the gender dichotomy between males and females does not depend on continued presence of endogenous gonadal steroids. Groups of beagle dogs were exposed by inhalation to attain either low or high initial lung burdens (ILB) of BeO calcined at 500 degrees or 1000 degrees C. Dogs were killed at 8, 32, 64, 180, and 365 days after exposure for evaluation of beryllium tissue burdens and histopathologic examination. A survey of the medical records of 813 female radium dial workers first exposed to radium before 1930 yielded reports of 119 cataracts in the group whose radium body burden had been measured at least once.
