Short-Term Warm Water Immersion for Improving Whole-Body Heat Loss in Older Men.

PURPOSE: Exercise-induced heat acclimation can mitigate age-related reductions in heat loss capacity, although performing repeated bouts of strenuous exercise in the heat may be untenable for many older adults. Although short-term passive heat acclimation (e.g., ≤7 days of warm water immersion) enhances whole-body heat loss in young adults, evidence of its efficacy in older adults is lacking. Thus, we examined whether 7 days of warm water immersion would improve whole-body heat loss in older adults. METHODS: Twelve habitually active older men (median [interquartile-range] age, 68 [64-73] year

Intestinal bacteria trigger a hibernation-like state in homotherms via the gut-brain axis.

The adaptation to low temperature has research value in the fields of spaceflight, disease treatment, and ecological evolution. However, continuous exposure to cold leads to hypothermia and death in homothermic animals. Interestingly, heterothermic animals can easily overcome this challenge. We transferred intestinal bacteria from hibernating Marmota himalayana into mice (homothermic animals) and successfully induced a torpor-like state. The mice exhibited typical characteristics of hibernation (torpor-like), such as the rectal temperature decreased by 3.72-4.58 °C, respiration rate and physic

Effect of initial core temperature on hyperthermic hyperventilation during prolonged submaximal exercise in the heat.

We investigated whether a core temperature threshold for hyperthermic hyperventilation is seen during prolonged submaximal exercise in the heat when core temperature before the exercise is reduced and whether the evoked hyperventilatory response is affected by altering the initial core temperature. Ten male subjects performed three exercise trials at 50% of peak oxygen uptake in the heat (37°C and 50% relative humidity) after altering their initial esophageal temperature (T(es)). Initial T(es) was manipulated by immersion for 25 min in water at 18°C (Precooling), 35°C (Control), or 40°C (Prehe

Environmental conditions affecting the athlete.

The athlete is exposed to a number of environmental conditions that may affect performance and health. The sports physical therapist must be aware of the effects of these conditions on the performance and well-being of athletes under his/her care. Decisions about an individual's participation and decisions about the safety of holding an event are within the scope of practice of a sports physical therapist. Additionally, the athlete looks to the sports physical therapist for training guidelines for events in various environmental conditions. A literature search was performed to determine the re

Tracheobronchial and upper airway blood flow in dogs during thermally induced panting.

Tracheobronchial blood flow increases two- to fivefold in response to isocapnic hyperventilation with warm dry or cold dry air in anesthetized, tracheostomized dogs. To determine whether this response is governed by central nervous system thermoregulatory control or is a local response to the drying and/or cooling of the airway mucosa, we studied eight anesthetized spontaneously breathing dogs in a thermally controlled chamber designed so that inspired air temperature, humidity, and body temperature could be separately regulated. Four dogs breathed through the nose and mouth (group 1), and fou

Ultrasound Deep Brain Stimulation Modulates Body Temperature in Mice.

Body temperature plays a critical role in rehabilitation, and numerous studies proved that the regulation of body temperature contributes to the sensorimotor recovery of patients with brain diseases such as stroke. The hypothalamus plays a key role in thermoregulation. Ultrasound deep brain stimulation (UDBS) can noninvasively modulate deep brain nuclei and have potential applications in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and depression, among others. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether ultrasound stimulation of the hypothalamus could regulate body temp

A characterisation of elite open water swimmers' core temperature responses and preparation practices in European Aquatics competitions.

OBJECTIVES: Open water swimming competition occurs within a water temperature (Tw) range (World Aquatics Tw: 16-31 °C) where heat- (hyperthermia) and cold-related (hypothermia) medical events and race-dropouts regularly occur. These can be attributed to the thermodynamic properties of water and human thermoregulatory (Treg) maladaptations for submersion [modest deviations (±0.5-2 °C) in core temperature (Tc) can impair performance and health]. Additionally, little real-world knowledge regarding elite open water swimmer preparation [e.g., heat/cold acclimation/acclimatisation] for extreme envir

Rate dependency and role of nitric oxide in the vascular response to direct cooling in human skin.

Local cooling of nonglabrous skin without functional sympathetic nerves causes an initial vasodilation followed by vasoconstriction. To further characterize these responses to local cooling, we examined the importance of the rate of local cooling and the effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition in intact skin and in skin with vasoconstrictor function inhibited. Release of norepinephrine was blocked locally (iontophoresis) with bretylium tosylate (BT). Skin blood flow was monitored from the forearm by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated as

Prehospital body temperature measurement in trauma patients: A literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Accidental hypothermia in trauma patients can contribute to cardiorespiratory dysfunction, acidosis, and coagulopathy, causing increased morbidity and mortality. The early recognition of the clinical signs of hypothermia and the accurate measurement of body temperature by prehospital care providers are essential to avoid deterioration. This review provides an overview of studies that examine the reliability of different core temperature measurement options, with a focus on the prehospital setting. METHODS: A search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL usin

The Physiology behind the Epidemiology of Heat-Related Health Impacts.

A direct consequence of climate change is the intensification of hot weather and extreme heat events that are epidemiologically associated with a greater risk of heat-related illnesses and other adverse health outcomes, often resulting in subsequent hospital admissions and mortality. The health risks associated with hot weather directly arise from the body's physiological responses (i.e., heat strain) to heat exposure. The magnitude of heat strain experienced and the extent of heat strain required to cause an adverse health outcome can be modulated by personal characteristics and the adoption

Neandertal Cold Adaptation: Technological, Anatomical, and Physiological Responses to Cold Stress in One of Our Closest Fossil Relatives.

Neandertals occupied western Eurasia for over 100 000 years, repeatedly enduring climates that ranged from seasonally cold to glacial. This paper reexamines the question of Neandertal cold adaptation using updated fossil, physiological, and archaeological evidence. While some populations lived outside glacial extremes, all faced periodic cold stress, and their survival depended on a diverse set of strategies. Technological buffers, including fire use, hide processing tools, and possible clothing and footwear, likely played a primary role in reducing cold exposure. Anatomically, Neandertals exh

Anatomical and physiological adaptation of the scrotal artery with muscular reinforcement in the middle layer and connective reinforcement of the adventitia.

The histology of blood vessels shows they are structured in three layers or tunics: tunica intima, which includes the internal limiting lamina with high elastin content; tunica media of smooth muscles fibers of circular disposition, which includes the external limiting lamina; and tunica adventitia of connective tissue. The vascular system is essential in regulating body temperature, especially in the scrotum and testis. This study aimed to analyze the histology of the scrotal arteries and their possible relationship to testicular temperature homeostasis. This study used scrotal samples from h

Social interaction and the thermogenic response of chicken hatchlings.

The aggregation of two or more individuals of the same species (huddling) is common in mammals and birds, especially in the cold. The physical contact reduces the weight-specific body surface exposed to the environment, thus lowering heat loss and the thermogenic needs. This study investigated the possibility that the mere presence of a conspecific, in absence of physical contact, may by itself influence metabolic rate during cold. The oxygen consumption (Vo2) of pairs of chicken hatchlings was measured when the hatchlings were in isolation (individuals), together in the respirometer but kept

Thermoregulatory responses in persons with lower-limb amputation during upper-limb endurance exercise in a hot and humid environment.

BACKGROUND: Persons with an amputation may have an increased heat strain due to reduced surface area. However, there is limited evidence on the thermoregulatory responses in persons with lower-limb amputation (LLA). Although a previous study reported no difference in their rectal temperatures (Tres) in a hot environment, suggesting compensatory sweating of the intact limb, we examined the thermoregulatory responses of such persons in a hot and humid environment. OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermoregulatory responses-through changes in Tre, sweat, and oxygen uptake (O2)-between persons with LLA

Regulation of Heat Exchange across the Hornbill Beak: Functional Similarities with Toucans?

Beaks are increasingly recognised as important contributors to avian thermoregulation. Several studies supporting Allen's rule demonstrate how beak size is under strong selection related to latitude and/or air temperature (Ta). Moreover, active regulation of heat transfer from the beak has recently been demonstrated in a toucan (Ramphastos toco, Ramphastidae), with the large beak acting as an important contributor to heat dissipation. We hypothesised that hornbills (Bucerotidae) likewise use their large beaks for non-evaporative heat dissipation, and used thermal imaging to quantify heat excha

Core and body surface temperatures of nesting leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea).

Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) are the largest species of marine turtle and the fourth most massive extant reptile. In temperate waters they maintain body temperatures higher than surrounding seawater through a combination of insulation, physiological, and behavioural adaptations. Nesting involves physical activity in addition to contact with warm sand and air, potentially presenting thermal challenges in the absence of the cooling effect of water, and data are lacking with which to understand their nesting thermal biology. Using non-contact methods (thermal imaging and infrared th

Acid-base balance of the domestic turkey during thermal panting.

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effects of thermal panting in domestic turkeys on arterial blood values for the acid-base variables, pH(a), bicarbonate concentration ([HCO(-) (3)](a)), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (P(a)CO(2)), and hemoglobin concentration [Hb]. In addition, body temperature and partial pressure of oxygen (P(a)O(2)) were measured to determine the effectiveness of panting in their control. Nine adult (23 wk) broad-breasted white turkey toms, all from the same hatch and reared contemporaneously in the same facility, were acclimated to room conditions of
