Fluid mechanical valving of air flow in bird lungs.

The unidirectional flow through the gas-exchanging bronchi of bird lungs is known to be effected by (1) the structure of the major bronchi and (2) a pressure difference between the cranial and caudal air sacs. To study the effects of bronchial structure, simple physical models of bird lungs were constructed. They suggested that, to achieve unidirectional flow, air in the caudal portion of the primary bronchus must be directed towards the orifices of the mediodorsal bronchi. To study the effect of air sac pressures, a controllable pressure difference was produced between the air sac orifices of

Thoracoscopic right anterior basal segmentectomy with unique anatomic variation: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Anatomic basal segmentectomy is often regarded as a complex procedure, particularly in the presence of complex anatomical variations. CASE REPORT: Herein, we present a case of a 55-year-old female patient diagnosed with invasive lung adenocarcinoma. Three-dimensional computed tomography bronchography and angiography (3D-CTBA) displayed a unique combined variation in the basal segment of right lower lobe (RLL): The medial basal subsegmental bronchi (BX7a+BX7t) originated from both the anterior and posterior segmental bronchi; The medial basal subsegmental arteries emanated from the

Bronchial Sleeve Resection and Double-Barreled Reconstruction for a Carcinoid Tumor.

Sleeve resection and double-barreled reconstruction are very rarely adopted for peripheral bronchial tumors. This surgical procedure was used for a carcinoid tumor in the bifurcation of the left upper and lower lobe bronchi. Bronchoplasty was accomplished by suturing the upper and basal bronchi together and anastomosing them to the left main bronchus. The techniques for double-barreled reconstruction described in this report obtained a successful result. These manipulations may be applicable to resection of other bronchial and tracheal bifurcations.

Phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors modulate beta2-adrenoceptor agonist-induced human airway hyperresponsiveness.

Chronic exposure of human isolated bronchi to beta2-adrenergic agonists, especially fenoterol, potentiates smooth muscle contraction in response to endothelin-1 (ET-1), a peptide implicated in chronic inflammatory airway diseases. 5'-Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) pathways are involved in fenoterol-induced hyperresponsiveness. The present study investigated whether chronic elevation of intracellular cAMP by other pathways than beta2-adrenoceptor stimulation provokes bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Samples from eighteen human bronchi were sensitized to ET-1 by prolonged incubation with 0.

[Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica: a case report].

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TO) is a rare disorder with unknown aetiology. In this paper, a case with TO was presented. A 77 year-old-man was admitted with cough for 2 years. Chest X-ray showed interstitial changes. Computed tomography of thorax demonstrated calcific density lesion in the trachea and in the left and right main bronchi. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed numerous white, hard, irregular nodules on the anterior and lateral walls of trachea and on main bronchi. Pathologic diagnosis of bronchoscopic biopsy was TO.

Tracheostenosis and bronchial abnormalities associated with pulmonary artery sling.

Three patients with aberrant left pulmonary artery (sling artery) are reported to illustrate associated tracheobronchial abnormalities. The clinical picture was that of severe episodic or progressive respiratory distress without dysphagia in early infancy. Striking narrowing of the trachea by complete "ring cartilages," unrelated to compression by the abnormal pulmonary artery, was present. Tracheotomy and intubation failed to relieve the obstruction. In one patient the bronchi and bronchial segmentation pattern were normal, but in the other two patients, bronchial abnormalities included wide

A case of congenital bronchial atresia patient with subclinical infection who underwent lung resection.

Congenital bronchial atresia, CBA, is rare and has often asymptomatic benign condition. The CBA condition usually arose during the formation of bronchi, but the CBA patients are able to live well into adulthood. This case highlights a potential surgical intervention for a CBA patient with subclinical infection. A 55-year-old Japanese male had abnormal findings on his chest X-ray at an annual health check-up in March 2018. His chest computed tomography (CT) revealed bronchial stenosis and infiltrative shadow in the right inferior lobe. He was referred to our hospital for further investigation a

Reflexes from airway rapidly adapting receptors.

Rapidly adapting receptors (RARs) occur throughout the respiratory tract from the nose to the bronchi. They have thin myelinated nerve fibres, an irregular discharge and adapt rapidly to a maintained volume stimulus, but often slowly to a chemical stimulus. They are polymodal, responding to mechanical and chemical irritant stimuli, and to many inflammatory and immunological mediators. RARs show very varied sensitivities to different stimuli, and diverse reflex responses. Those in the larynx are usually called 'irritant' receptors. They probably cause cough, the expiration reflex and other lary

M3/M1-Selective antimuscarinic tropinyl and piperidinyl esters.

The binding affinities of some tropinyl and piperidinyl esters for the submandibulary glands (M3/M1) and heart ventricle (M2) were determined from displacement experiments using 3H-labelled N-methylscopolamine as radioligand. The antimuscarinic activities of these esters were also evaluated on guinea pig bronchi. The esters inhibited the M3-mediated carbachol-induced contraction of the bronchial smooth muscle and a reasonable correlation was obtained between the binding affinities of the esters for the submandibulary glands (pKM3,M1) and their inhibitory activities (pIC50) on guinea pig bronch

Uniportal thoracoscopic left posterior basal segmentectomy using a posterior approach.

Posterior basal (S10) segmentectomy is one of the most challenging (and uncommon) types of pulmonary segmentectomy. Here, we present two key tips for facilitating a uniportal operation. The first is a full understanding of the relative locations of the pulmonary vessels and bronchi (as revealed by preoperative three-dimensional computed tomography/broncho-angiography), and the other is the use of "suction-guided stapling" to dissect and divide the peripheral pulmonary vessels and bronchi. We describe the successful postoperative course of a patient who was so treated.

Neurogenic airway inflammation induced by repeated intra-esophageal instillation of HCl in guinea pigs.

This study was conducted to investigate if repeated intra-esophageal acid administrations may induce neurogenic inflammation in the airways and nodose ganglion in a guinea pig model. Guinea pigs were sedated and perfused with 0.1 N HCl in the distal esophagus via a nasoesophageal catheter for 14 consecutive days. Substance P (SP), neurokinin A (NKA), neurokinin B (NKB), and calcitonin gene-related peptide concentration were measured by ELISA or radioimmunoassay. Neuropeptide expression in the airways and nodose ganglion was detected by immunohistochemistry and assessed semi-quantitatively. Inf

Modulation of hypersensitivity reaction by lipids given orally.

The effect of lipids administration by gavage (0.4% body weight) given daily during four weeks on the hypersensitivity reaction in trachea, upper and lower bronchi, liver, kidney, mesentery, and pancreas was investigated in male rats. The plasma exudation was assessed by using Evans blue (EB) dye extravasation method. There was a significant difference in the permeability of the organs in nonimmunized rats. The immunization increased the vascular permeability and the response with the organs varied greatly. The effect of lipids on anaphylactic reaction was compared to those of untreated rats (

Acetylcholinesterase-positive nerves of the rhesus monkey bronchial tree.

The rhesus monkey lung was stained both by histological methods and histochemically for specific acetylcholinesterase (AChE). AChE-containing nerves in bundles were demonstrated in connective tissue of the hilum and in association with clusters of ganglion cells. These bundles become associated with the bronchial tree as they enter the lung parenchyma, and their numbers of myelinated fibres diminish as they pass scattered ganglion cells along the bronchial system. Extrachondral and subchondral plexuses of nerves were found to be interconnected and to contribute to the perimuscular varicose ner

New pathological findings in emphysema of childhood. 3. Unilateral congenital emphysema with hypoplasia--and compensatory emphysema of contralateral lung.

A quantitative study is here reported on the lungs of a child of 9 months with unilateral emphysema associated with hypoplasia, and with compensatory emphysema in the contralateral lung. The left lung was judged to show congenital hypoplasia because of the reduced number of bronchi and arteries, its small volume, and a total alveolar number less than that normally found at birth. This last was due mainly to reduction in the number of acini, the intra-acinar number seeming little affected. As the alveoli were eight times the normal volume, the case was considered to be one of congenital hypopla

Development of a cotton rat-human metapneumovirus (hMPV) model for identifying and evaluating potential hMPV antivirals and vaccines.

Hispid cotton rats were inoculated with two different human metapneumovirus (hMPV) subtype A strains and one subtype B hMPV. Although no overt disease was seen in any virus-inoculated animal, following an eclipse phase, significant pulmonary virus titers were observed in every hMPV-inoculated animal through day 7 post virus inoculation (p.i.) and in most through day 10. Peak virus titers occurred four days p.i., while virus-induced histopathology was most evident in lung sections obtained from animals 7 to 10 days p.i. The latter consisted primarily of desquamating and hypertrophic columnar ep

[Concept of defects in the interrupted development of the bronchopulmonary system. I. Aplasias and hypoplasias].

The defects in case of interrupted development of broncho-pulmonary systems are intranatal, perinatal and postnatal deviations from its normal development. They could be: 1) aplasias; 2) hypoplasias; 3) dysplasias. The aplasias are early intranatal dysembryopathies, originating under the effect of epigenetic and paragenetic factors. In classical aplasias, the rudimentary development of a bronchus, first and second generation is the absence of pulmonary parenchyma, is concerned. In aplasias of the air passages of third, fourth, etc. generations, the primitive mesoderm could undergo cyst-like fo

Evaluation of bronchoscopic findings in patients with metastatic pulmonary tumor.

To clarify the bronchoscopic findings in metastatic spread to the bronchi, we analyzed the records of 65 cases of metastatic pulmonary disease in which fiberoptic bronchoscopy had been done. Forty-five patients (69.2%) had abnormal bronchoscopic findings. These patients could be divided into three groups, according to bronchoscopic findings and route of metastatic spread to the bronchi: endobronchial metastasis (n=15), bronchial involvement (that is, direct extension to the bronchi from adjacent metastatic foci, n=15), and lymphangitis carcinomatosa (n=15). Breast cancer and colon cancer were

Lung transplantation for Williams-Campbell syndrome.

Williams-Campbell syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by a deficiency of cartilage in subsegmental bronchi leading to distal airway collapse and bronchiectasis. We report the first case of lung transplantation in a patient with end-stage lung disease secondary to Williams-Campbell syndrome. Although the patient did not have proximal airway collapse prior to transplantation, his posttransplant course was complicated by the development of bronchomalacia of the right and left mainstem bronchi. The patient experienced recurrent pulmonary infections and died of bacterial pneumonia 1 year afte
