A principled framework for phenotyping postpartum hemorrhage across multiple levels of severity.

Maternal morbidity and mortality have gained major attention recently, spurred on by rising domestic rates even as maternal mortality decreases in Europe. A major driver of morbidity and mortality among delivering women is postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). PPH is currently phenotyped using the subjective measure of 'Estimated blood loss' (EBL), which has been shown to be unreliable for tracking quality. Here we present a framework for phenotyping PPH into multiple severity levels, using a combination of data-driven techniques and expert-derived clinical indicators. We validate the framework by pred

Simultaneous prediction of multiple outcomes using revised stacking algorithms.

MOTIVATION: HIV is difficult to treat because its virus mutates at a high rate and mutated viruses easily develop resistance to existing drugs. If the relationships between mutations and drug resistances can be determined from historical data, patients can be provided personalized treatment according to their own mutation information. The HIV Drug Resistance Database was built to investigate the relationships. Our goal is to build a model using data in this database, which simultaneously predicts the resistance of multiple drugs using mutation information from sequences of viruses for any new

Understanding Older Adults' Resilience During the Brisbane Floods: Social Capital, Life Experience, and Optimism.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore how social capital or the impact of life and previous disaster experience facilitated resilience in older adults who experienced the 2011 and 2013 floods in Brisbane, Australia. METHODS: Data were drawn from in-depth interviews of 10 older adults from Brisbane who were evacuated in both the 2011 and 2013 floods. A combined qualitative approach drawing from the methods of constructivist grounded theory and narrative inquiry was applied and the data were analyzed by using (inductive) line-by-line and axial coding. RESULTS: The narratives of t

Protein domain of unknown function 3233 is a translocation domain of autotransporter secretory mechanism in gamma proteobacteria.

Vibrio cholerae, the enteropathogenic gram negative bacteria is one of the main causative agents of waterborne diseases like cholera. About 1/3(rd) of the organism's genome is uncharacterised with many protein coding genes lacking structure and functional information. These proteins form significant fraction of the genome and are crucial in understanding the organism's complete functional makeup. In this study we report the general structure and function of a family of hypothetical proteins, Domain of Unknown Function 3233 (DUF3233), which are conserved across gram negative gammaproteobacteria

The Role of Psychosocial Factors in Returning to Physical Activity and Sport Among Female Football Players After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are an increasingly common knee injury in sport requiring quick direction changes, such as the football codes. Return to physical activity and sport following an ACL injury predominantly focuses on achieving objective milestones to resolve physical impairments, with sex differences reported. However, irrespective of management approach following an ACL injury, many athletes do not return to the same level of sport, if at all, warranting the need to consider psychological and social factors. AIM: The aim of this scoping review was to invest

An integrated toolkit for structure generation, optimization, and evaluation in spatially fractionated radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) planning requires three coordinated tasks: generation of high-dose sphere structures, position-aware optimization, and peak-valley dose ratio evaluation. In practice, clinicians and researchers address these tasks with a combination of closed-source scripts, research codes, and manual calculation. The absence of a unified, commercially deployable toolkit remains a barrier to multi-institutional SFRT trials. We present MAAS-SFRThelper, a shared-source plugin that integrates structure generation, geometric-aware optimization, and peak-vall

Using systems thinking and the Intervention Level Framework to analyse public health planning for complex problems: Otitis media in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

BACKGROUND: Middle ear disease (otitis media) is endemic among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia and represents an important cause of hearing loss. The disease is the result of a mix of biological, environmental and host risk factors that interact in complex, non-linear ways along a dynamic continuum. As such, it is generally recognised that a holistic, systems approach is required to reverse the high rates of otitis media in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The objective of this paper is to examine the alignment between efforts designed to address otit

Adolescents' use of an online Q&A service to enhance their oral health literacy: a mixed-methods text mining and thematic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is fundamental to healthy behaviour, defined as seeking, processing, and evaluating health information to make informed decisions. Access to health information has historically been linked to socioeconomic status (SES), with disparities in health persisting due to unequal access to new health technologies. Digital technologies offer opportunities for spreading health information but may also increase inequalities through a digital divide. The Norwegian government established the website ung.no in 2003 to provide health information to adolescents. This study aims to

Adapting Palliative and End-of-Life Care Training for Emergency Physicians in Japan: A Modified Grounded Theory Study.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the aging population has led to an increase in seriously ill patients requiring emergency care. Although palliative care training opportunities are limited in Japan, established programs exist in the United States (U.S.). To inform future adaptation of such programs for use in Japan, this study aims to identify barriers that emergency physicians (EPs) in Japan encounter when providing palliative care. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the end-of-life care decision-making processes of EPs in Japan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with board-certified EPs

Managing non-communicable diseases at health district level in Cambodia: a systems analysis and suggestions for improvement.

BACKGROUND: Cambodia developed its public health system along the principles of the district model and geared its services towards managing communicable diseases and maternal and child health issues. In line with other countries in the region, non-communicable diseases have emerged as a leading cause of adult mortality. We assessed the current capacity of the Cambodian district health system to manage hypertension and diabetes, with a focus on access to medicine for these chronic conditions. METHODS: A case study whereby in three purposely selected districts in an equal number of provinces a

'We are always in some form of contact': friendships among homeless drug and alcohol users living in hostels.

Homeless drug and alcohol users are one of the most marginalised groups in society. They frequently have complex needs and limited social support. In this paper, we explore the role of friendship in the lives of homeless drug and alcohol users living in hostels, using the concepts of 'social capital' and 'recovery capital' to frame the analyses. The study was undertaken in three hostels, each in a different English city, during 2013-2014. Audio recorded semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 residents (9 females; 21 males) who self-reported drink and/or drug problems; follow-up inte

Fall patterns and outcomes after a moderate urban earthquake without structural collapse: a retrospective cohort from Istanbul.

BACKGROUND: Moderate earthquakes - where structural collapse is absent - represent an underexplored public health challenge. In such events, injuries arise not from building failure but from behavior-associated injury mechanisms. This study aims to characterize injury patterns and mechanisms among individuals presenting to a tertiary emergency department following the 6.2 Mw Istanbul earthquake of April 23, 2025, and to identify implications for community-level behavioral preparedness. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital serving a catchment population o

TakeMeHome: A Novel Method for Reaching Previously Untested People Through Online Ordering and Self-Collect HIV and STI Testing.

BACKGROUND: Despite national testing guidelines, rates of testing for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and hepatitis C remain lower than recommended for men who have sex with men in the United States. To help address this, the TakeMeHome (TMH) program was started in March 2020 by Building Healthy Online Communities, a consortium of public health organizations and dating apps, to work with health departments to increase access to HIV testing for men who have sex with men on dating apps. METHODS: Users of participating dating apps were sent messages about opportunities for testing w

FHIR-PYrate: a data science friendly Python package to query FHIR servers.

BACKGROUND: We present FHIR-PYrate, a Python package to handle the full clinical data collection and extraction process. The software is to be plugged into a modern hospital domain, where electronic patient records are used to handle the entire patient's history. Most research institutes follow the same procedures to build study cohorts, but mainly in a non-standardized and repetitive way. As a result, researchers spend time writing boilerplate code, which could be used for more challenging tasks. METHODS: The package can improve and simplify existing processes in the clinical research enviro

A ubiquitous method for street scale spatial data collection and analysis in challenging urban environments: mapping health risks using spatial video in Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Fine-scale and longitudinal geospatial analysis of health risks in challenging urban areas is often limited by the lack of other spatial layers even if case data are available. Underlying population counts, residential context, and associated causative factors such as standing water or trash locations are often missing unless collected through logistically difficult, and often expensive, surveys. The lack of spatial context also hinders the interpretation of results and designing intervention strategies structured around analytical insights. This paper offers a ubiquitous spatial d

Co-development of a research-to-policy framework for Indonesia's health policy-making: a multiperspective approach.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the global promotion of evidence-informed health policy-making, translating research into actionable policy remains a challenge across settings. While global frameworks have provided guidance, adaptation to local contexts remains limited. This study aimed to co-develop a practical, context-specific, stakeholder-informed research-to-policy (R2P) framework for Indonesia. METHODS: A multilevel qualitative study (May 2024-May 2025) combined a narrative literature review, expert consultations, and cognitive debriefing interviews.
