Sand-grinding integrated with coatings for preparation of hydrophobic surface based on Miao silver.

Water-proofing, anti-corrosion and anti-tarnishing requirement is currently the key to improvement of Miao silver industry. Inspired by superhydrophobic surface (SHS), we managed to use it as a protecting layer to isolate from air, water vapor, liquid electrolyte possibly around with silver ware; meanwhile also give a guide for other mental productions with the same requirement. Considering micro/nanostructure of lotus leaf, water strider's leg, butterfly wings together surface wax substance, especially for butterfly wings' scale-like macrostructure with semi-cylinder-like nanostructure on it,

Disturbance Mosaics Shape Multiple Pollinator Taxa Across Spatial and Temporal Scales in Fire-Managed Forests.

Because forests are critical to a large fraction of global pollinator diversity, there is great interest in better understanding how changes in forest cover, structure, and composition affect these essential organisms. Fire is one of the key drivers of such changes worldwide, yet the effects of variation in fire regimes on pollinator communities remain poorly understood. We tested how fire history, roads, and tree composition jointly influence the richness, abundance, assemblage composition, and trait structure of bees, butterflies, and hover flies in a fire-managed forest landscape in the sou

Lepidopterism: two cases of systemic reactions to the cocoon of a common moth, Chelepteryx collesi.

Lepidopterism is a general term for the ill-effects to humans from contact with moths and butterflies. We describe two cases of systemic reactions after contact with the cocoon of the Australian species Chelepteryx collesi, or white-stemmed gum moth--irritant and toxic effects in one and a systemic allergic reaction in the other. Early removal of urticating hairs from the skin in such cases may be advisable.

Patterned dystrophies of the retinal pigment epithelium.

Three varieties of patterned dystrophies of the retinal pigment epithelium have been described in the literature: They are reticular dystrophy, macroreticular dystrophy, and butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy of the fovea (macula). They are all inherited and are bilateral and symmetric. Results of retinal-function tests in all three varieties were essentially normal, except for the electro-oculogram in the butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy. We have observed within a single family one member manifesting butterfly-shaped pigment dystrophy, one member with macroreticular dystrophy, and one membe

Comparing Machine Learning Using UAVs to Ground Survey Methods to Quantify Milkweed Stem Density and Habitat Characteristics in ROWs.

Monarch butterflies have declined in both eastern and western populations. Conservation initiatives that support this imperiled species are being implemented in lands managed by the energy and transportation sectors. Vegetation management strategies that encourage the presence of milkweed (Asclepias spp.), the larval host of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), or floral resources to support pollinators are being practiced across North America; however, survey methods to evaluate the success of these strategies vary in accuracy and scalability. In this study, we compared five methods to qua

Anti-Butterfly Effect in Ribavirin Studied by Combined Experiment (PXRD/1H-14N NQR Cross-Relaxation Spectroscopy), Quantum Chemical Calculations, Molecular Docking, Molecular Dynamics Simulations, and Novel Structure-Binding Strength and Quadrupolar Indices.

Ribavirin, 1-(β-D-Ribofuranosyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide, which is included in the list of drugs recommended in the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection, has been the subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. The most thermodynamically stable polymorphic form was studied using 1H-14N NQR cross-relaxation, periodic DFT/QTAIM/RDS/3D Hirshfeld surfaces, and molecular docking. For the first time, a 1H-14N cross-relaxation spectrum of ribavirin was recorded and interpreted. Twelve resonance frequencies were assigned to four inequivalent nitrogen po

Differences in structural color and population genetic structure of Western and Central Palearctic Polyommatus icarus populations.

The blue structural coloration of male Polyommatus icarus butterflies functions as a sexual signaling trait and exhibits remarkable spectral stability within populations despite being generated by highly complex photonic nanoarchitectures. The correlation of the blue sexual signaling color and population genetic variation of the butterflies was investigated across the Western and Central Palearctic regions. Dorsal wing reflectance spectra was measured for 95 male specimens and compared with the population genetic structure revealed in 99 specimens by 18 recently developed microsatellites. Refl

Subjective ratings of fear are associated with frontal late positive potential asymmetry, but not with early brain activity over the occipital and centro-parietal cortices.

The human frontal cortex is asymmetrically involved in motivational and affective processing. Several studies have shown that the left-frontal hemisphere is related to positive and approach-related affect, whereas the right-frontal hemisphere is related to negative and withdrawal-related affect. The present study aimed to investigate whether evolutionarily threatening stimuli modulate asymmetrical frontal activity. We examined hemispheric differences in frontal late positive potentials (f-LPP asymmetry) and frontal alpha power activation (frontal alpha asymmetry, FAA) in response to images dep

Femoroacetabular Impingement in Elite Ice Hockey Goaltenders: Etiological Implications of On-Ice Hip Mechanics.

BACKGROUND: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is particularly prevalent in ice hockey. The butterfly goalie technique is thought to involve extreme ranges of hip motion that may predispose goaltenders to FAI. PURPOSE: To quantify hip mechanics during 3 common goaltender movements and interpret their relevance to the development of FAI. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Fourteen collegiate and professional goaltenders performed skating, butterfly save, and recovery movements on the ice. Hip mechanics were compared across the 3 movements. RESULTS: The butterfly did not ex

My Father's Dying.

The monarch butterflies so abundant around the small pond are slowly disappearing. Tomatoes from the vine that curled its way up the drainage spout are now lined up on the kitchen windowsill to capture the sun's rays. Summer draws to an end as my father's life also draws to a close. As part of my narrative, I have included, in italics, entries from my journal from this time.

Acquisition and inhibition of conditioned fear is modulated by individual stimulus fear-relevance.

Inhibitory learning is an important factor for decreasing fear expression. We investigated conditioned inhibition of learned fear responses using conditioned excitors and inhibitors differing in fear-relevance in a sample of 48 healthy female students. To study the effect of stimulus fear-relevance, we used the fear potentiated startle paradigm in an AX+/BX- discrimination learning task with fear-relevant (spider) vs. fear-irrelevant (butterfly) pictures as CS+ (A) and CS- (B), respectively. We found that, during acquisition, participants with elevated fear of spiders showed stronger fear pote

Adaptations for gas exchange enabled the elongation of lepidopteran proboscises.

The extensive biodiversification of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) is partly attributed to their unique mouthparts (proboscis [Pr]) that can span in length from less than 1 mm to over 280 mm in Darwin's sphinx moths. Lepidoptera, similar to other insects, are believed to inhale and exhale respiratory gases only through valve-like spiracles on their thorax and abdomen, making gas exchange through the narrow tracheae (Tr) challenging for the elongated Pr. How Lepidoptera overcome distance effects for gas transport to the Pr is an open question that is important to understanding how the Pr e

Mode of action, chemistry and defensive efficacy of the osmeterium in the caterpillar Battus polydamas archidamas.

Chemical secretions are one of the main defensive mechanisms in insects. The osmeterium is a unique organ in larvae of Papilionidae (Lepidoptera), which is everted upon disturbance, secreting odoriferous volatiles. Here, using larvae of the specialized butterfly Battus polydamas archidamas (Papilionidae: Troidini), we aimed to understand the mode of action of the osmeterium, the chemical composition and origin of the secretion, as well as its defensive efficiency against a natural predator. We described osmeterium's morphology, ultramorphology, structure, ultrastructure, and chemistry. Additio

False aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis of a femoral shaft fracture.

We present the case of a 50-year-old man who developed a delayed progressive swelling over the medial aspect of his right thigh, six weeks following minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) of a supracondylar femur fracture. Angiography showed a false aneurysm of the superficial femoral artery, caused by progressive displacement of a butterfly fragment. Open vascular repair was performed and the sharp edge of the butterfly fragment was removed.

First recording of cardiac activity in the Anteos menippe bubble and isoflurane interference during anesthetic induction and recovery.

Understanding the physiological regulation of cardiac activity in insects remains a central topic in insect biochemistry and physiology. In Lepidoptera, direct electrophysiological characterization of cardiac function is still limited, particularly under anesthetic conditions commonly used during experimental manipulation. In this study, we evaluated the effects of isoflurane anesthesia on cardiac electrophysiology in adult Anteos menippe butterflies during anesthetic induction and recovery. A total of eighteen newly emerged adults were subjected to two experiments. Experiment 1 - behavior dur

The attenuation of spider avoidance action tendencies in spider-fearful individuals and its impact on explicit evaluation of spider stimuli.

Researchers have demonstrated that individuals with heightened levels of spider-fear, as compared to relatively lower levels of spider-fear, are characterised a pattern of action tendencies that facilitates the speed to complete 'avoidance' movements, as compared to 'approach movements, in the face of spider-stimuli. However, research has not determined whether such tendencies are able to be manipulated, and the impact of their manipulation, in individuals with heightened spider-fear. Seventy-one participants who reported relatively high levels of spider-fear completed an action tendency manip

Attentional capture by real and illusory faces: a failure to replicate.

Evidence indicates that faces are rapidly detected and prioritized in visual processing due to their social relevance. Crucially, research has shown that faces capture attention even when they are task-irrelevant, suggesting the existence of an automatic, domain-specific attentional mechanism. This prioritization appears to extend to face pareidolia-the illusory perception of faces in objects-indicating that face detection may rely on a broadly tuned mechanism that classifies stimuli as faces or non-faces based on relatively minimal information, such as the T-shaped configuration common to all

Optogenetic sensors in the zebrafish heart: a novel in vivo electrophysiological tool to study cardiac arrhythmogenesis.

Cardiac arrhythmias are among the most challenging human disorders to diagnose and treat due to their complex underlying pathophysiology. Suitable experimental animal models are needed to study the mechanisms causative for cardiac arrhythmogenesis. To enable in vivo analysis of cardiac cellular electrophysiology with a high spatial and temporal resolution, we generated and carefully validated two zebrafish models, one expressing an optogenetic voltage indicator (chimeric VSFP-butterfly CY) and the other a genetically encoded calcium indicator (GCaMP6f) in the heart. Methods: High-speed epifluo

Predator response to the coloured eyespots and defensive posture of Colombian four-eyed frogs.

Deimatic displays, where sudden changes in prey appearance elicit aversive predator reactions, have been suggested to occur in many taxa. These (often only putative) displays frequently involve different components that may also serve antipredator functions via other mechanisms (e.g., mimicry, warning signalling, body inflation). The Colombian four-eyed frog, Pleurodema brachyops, has been suggested to gain protection against predation through putative deimatic displays where they inflate and elevate the posterior part of their body revealing eye-like colour markings. We exposed stationary art
