Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma presenting with persistent high fever.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare tumor that develops in the peritoneum. In this paper, we describe an extremely rare case of MPM metastasizing to the appendix in a 48-year-old female who initially presented with a persistent high fever. The woman reported a slight lower abdominal discomfort which had been relieved by urination for four months. She had lost 5 kg of weight. There was no nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or abdominal distension. Many broad spectrum antibiotics were given without relief of fever. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a thickened omentu

[Immunohistochemical study of calretinin in normal hair follicles and tumors with follicular differentiation].

BACKGROUND: Selective immunostaining for calretinin labels the innermost layer of the outer root sheath of normal hair follicles, which is difficult to distinguish with hematoxylin-eosin staining. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether immunohistochemistry for calretinin allows identification of cutaneous adnexal tumors with follicular differentiation towards cells of the outer root sheath. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed the staining pattern for calretinin by immunohistochemistry in 49 biopsies of cutaneous adnexal tumors with follicular differentiation. RESULTS: Fifte

Accessory liver lobe with mesothelial inclusion cysts in an omphalocele: a new malformative association.

Mesothelial inclusion cysts represent benign lesions that have been reported in a wide variety of locations. Peritoneal cysts are observed and visceral involvement has been described, notably of intraperitoneal organs such as the spleen and the testis. We report the cases of 2 neonates who underwent surgical management of an omphalocele. The hernial sac contained an accessory liver lobe, displaying in both cases multilocular mesothelial inclusion cysts. The hobnail cells lining the cysts exhibited calretinin and cytokeratin immunohistochemical reactivity, as well as focal D2-40 reactivity. One

Spatiotemporal patterning of IP3-mediated Ca2+ signals in Xenopus oocytes by Ca2+-binding proteins.

Ca(2+)-binding proteins (CaBPs) are expressed in a highly specific manner across many different cell types, yet the physiological basis underlying their selective distribution patterns remains unclear. We used confocal line-scan microscopy together with photo-release of IP(3) in Xenopus oocytes to investigate the actions of mobile cytosolic CaBPs on the spatiotemporal properties of IP(3)-evoked Ca(2+) signals. Parvalbumin (PV), a CaBP with slow Ca(2+)-binding kinetics, shortened the duration of IP(3)-evoked Ca(2+) signals and 'balkanized' global responses into discrete localized events (puffs)

Unusual clear cell variant of epithelioid mesothelioma.

Clear cell mesothelioma is an extremely rare neoplasm of the pleura, which can easily be mistaken for a metastasis of clear cell carcinoma to the pleura. We report here the histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural aspects of a new case of clear cell pleural mesothelioma in a 52-year-old man with no known asbestos exposure. He was admitted to the hospital for recurrent pleural effusion, which was negative for neoplastic cells at the cytologic examination. A partial decortication of the right pleura was performed. The morphologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features

Calretinin-immunoreactivity in the oro-facial and pharyngeal regions of the rat.

Calretinin-immunoreactivity (CR-ir) was examined in the rat oro-facial and pharyngeal tissues using an immunofluorescence method. CR-ir was distributed in the entire size range of trigeminal ganglion neurons. CR-ir was also observed in nerve fibers surrounding neuronal cell bodies in autonomic ganglia, and in nerve endings in the lip, tongue, incisal papilla, soft palate, pharynx and epiglottis. CR-immunoreactive nerve endings were all in close proximity to the epithelium, and classified into 2 types; simple (free nerve ending) and taste-bud-related types. In the salivary gland, positive nerve

Combination of calretinin, MALAT1, and GAS5 as a potential prognostic biomarker to predict disease progression in surgically treated mesothelioma patients.

BACKGROUND: The role of cytoreductive surgery for epithelioid pleural mesothelioma within a multimodal treatment approach remains controversial. Carefully selected patients benefit from cytoreductive surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy, but there is no established biomarker to predict tumor recurrence or progression during the course of the disease. The aim of this study was to identify potential biomarkers to predict therapeutic response in terms of progression-free survival. METHODS: Between 03/2014 and 08/2022, preoperative blood samples were collected from 76 patients with epithelioid pleur

Assessment of potential predictors of calretinin and mesothelin to improve the diagnostic performance to detect malignant mesothelioma: results from a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Mesothelin and calretinin are blood-based markers for malignant mesothelioma. The objective of this study was to analyse the markers in plasma samples from cancer-free men and to identify factors influencing their concentrations to minimise false-positive test results when using these markers for the early detection of malignant mesothelioma. SETTING: The present analyses used data and archived blood samples of the population-based Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study among elderly people collected from 2011 to 2014. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 569 men (median age 70 years) without a malignan

Presence of intramucosal neuroglial cells in normal and aganglionic human colon.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is composed of neural crest-derived neurons (also known as ganglion cells) the cell bodies of which are located in the submucosal and myenteric plexuses of the intestinal wall. Intramucosal ganglion cells are known to exist but are rare and often considered ectopic. Also derived from the neural crest are enteric glial cells that populate the ganglia and the associated nerves, as well as the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa. In Hirschsprung disease (HSCR), ganglion cells are absent from the distal gut because of a failure of neural crest-derived progenito

Lack of promoting effects from physical pulmonary collapse in a female A/J mouse lung tumor initiated with 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) with remarkable mesothelial cell reactions in the thoracic cavity by the polymer.

Experimental identification of potential chemopreventive or tumor promotive agents in the lung is important. Establishment of short-term bioassay models is therefore a high priority. In an attempt to induce strong promotion effects, in Experiment 1, left thoracotomy was performed on A/J mice at week 3 after initiation with 4-(methylnitrosamno)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) (2mg/0.1 ml saline/mouse i.p.) at weeks 0 and 1. In Experiment 2, at week 3, 0.2 ml of polymer gel was infused directly into the left cavity of the thorax with thoracotomy to occupy certain thoracic cavity volume and to exa

The distribution and origin of the calretinin-containing innervation of the nucleus accumbens of the rat.

The nucleus accumbens of the rat consists of several subregions that can be distinguished on the basis of histochemical markers. For example, the calcium-binding protein calbindin D28k is a useful marker of the core compartment of the nucleus accumbens. Calretinin, another calcium-binding protein, is found in a dense fibre plexus in the accumbal shell and septal pole regions. The source of the accumbal calretinin innervation is not known. We examined the distribution of calretinin in the nucleus accumbens and used tract-tracing and lesion methods to determine the source of this calretinin inne

Multiplexed volumetric CLEM enabled by antibody derivatives provides new insights into the cytology of the mouse cerebellar cortex.

Mapping neuronal networks that underlie behavior has become a central focus in neuroscience. While serial section electron microscopy (ssEM) can reveal the fine structure of neuronal networks (connectomics), it does not provide the molecular information that helps identify cell types or their functional properties. Volumetric correlated light and electron microscopy (vCLEM) combines ssEM and volumetric fluorescence microscopy to incorporate molecular labeling into ssEM datasets. We developed an approach that uses small fluorescent single-chain variable fragment (scFv) immuno-probes to perform

Multiomic analysis revealed the regulatory role of the KRT14 gene in eggshell quality.

Background: Eggshell strength and thickness are critical factors in reducing the egg breaking rate and preventing economic losses. The calcite biomineralization process is very important for eggshell quality. Therefore, we employed transcriptional sequencing and proteomics to investigate the differences between the uteruses of laying hens with high- and low-breaking-strength shells. Results: A total of 1,028 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 270 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified. The analysis results of GO terms and KEGG pathways showed that most of the DEGs and

Vitamin C Deficiency Causes Severe Defects in the Development of the Neonatal Cerebellum and in the Motor Behaviors of Gulo(-/-) Mice.

AIMS: The developing brain of a neonate is particularly susceptible to damage by vitamin C deficiency because of its rapid growth and immature antioxidant system. Cognitive impairment and sensory motor deficits are found in the adult brain upon vitamin C deficiency. Therefore, the aim of this study was to clarify the role of vitamin C in its own right and its related mechanisms in Gulo(-/-) mice incapable of synthesizing vitamin C. RESULTS: When vitamin C supplementation was ceased for 2 weeks until delivery, stillbirths and a significant reduction in neonatal mice were observed and the growt

Mitochondrial complex inhibitors preferentially damage substantia nigra dopamine neurons in rat brain slices.

Using a rat brain slice preparation, we investigated the role of energy impairment on the selective loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Brain slices (400 microm) were incubated at 35 degrees C for 2 h in the presence or absence of mitochondrial complex inhibitors, rotenone, MPP+, 3-nitropropionic acid, and antimycin A. Slices were also incubated in rotenone with excitatory amino acid (EAA) receptor antagonists, MK-801 and CNQX, to determine whether rotenone-induced damage was mediated by EAAs. The slices were then fixed, recut into 30-microm sections, and immunolabeled for t

Heterogeneous and compartmental distribution of zinc in the striatum and globus pallidus of the rat.

The distribution of vesicular or chelatable zinc was analysed in the dorsal and ventral subdivisions of the striatum and globus pallidus of the rat with Danscher's selenium method. Acetylcholinesterase and Calbindin-D28k were used as striatal and pallidal markers in order to analyse the possible compartmentalization of the distribution of zinc in the striatum and globus pallidus. The main findings of this study are the following: (1) The distribution of vesicular zinc in the dorsal striatum was heterogeneous. A peripheral rim of tissue heavily stained for zinc was detected in the medial, dorsa
