Temporal variations in magma plumbing influence eruption priming and the interpretation of unrest signals, yet remain poorly constrained in low-flux ocean island volcanoes. Here, we examine temporal changes in the active volcanic system beneath La Palma, Canary Islands, using clinopyroxene zoning from the 1712, 1971, and 2021 eruptions. Since 1980, we have collected fourteen cases of mesothelioma induced by environmental exposure to asbestos, going back to childhood in patients from north-east Corsica, in a region which was remote from the asbestos mine of Canari. We have compared the sleep-producing effects of thalidomide and pentobarbital. In a dose range that did not produce ataxia, thalidomide increased slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep in cats (2-8 mg/kg p.o.) and rats (16 mg/kg p.o.). Pentobarbital had hypnotic activity in the same dose range but produced ataxia also at these doses. Thalidomide reduced spontaneous activity of both mice and rats. An epornitic of avian pox occurred in a flock of 123 houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii) received at the Sulman Falcon Hospital in the State of Bahrain in February 1993. An extensive clinical study has been performed on pigeon breeders in the Canary Islands. Three hundred forty-three subjects have participated in this study through the filling of a clinical and epidemiologic questionnaire. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors influencing functional improvement of cervical spinal cord injuries during hospital admission.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients with an acute cervical spinal cord injury who had completed a rehabilitation programme in the Spinal Cord Injuries Unit of the Canary Islands between 2001 and 2018. To measure functional improvement, we administered the Spinal Cord Independence Measure III (SCIM III) on admission and at discharge.
