Quantifying the relative contributions of the X chromosome, autosomes, and mitochondrial genome to local adaptation.

During local adaptation with gene flow, some regions of the genome are inherently more responsive to selection than others. Recent theory predicts that X-linked genes should disproportionately contribute to local adaptation relative to other genomic regions, yet this prediction remains to be tested. We carried out a multigeneration crossing scheme, using two cline-end populations of Drosophila melanogaster, to estimate the relative contributions of the X chromosome, autosomes, and mitochondrial genome to divergence in four traits involved in local adaptation (wing size, resistance to heat, des

Emergence, spread, persistence and fade-out of sylvatic plague in Kazakhstan.

Predicting the dynamics of zoonoses in wildlife is important not only for prevention of transmission to humans, but also for improving the general understanding of epidemiological processes. A large dataset on sylvatic plague in the Pre-Balkhash area of Kazakhstan (collected for surveillance purposes) provides a rare opportunity for detailed statistical modelling of an infectious disease. Previous work using these data has revealed a host abundance threshold for epizootics, and climatic influences on plague prevalence. Here, we present a model describing the local space-time dynamics of the di

Limitation of O3 Dry Deposition by Elevated-Source NO Emissions and Surface Dryness in Urban Environments.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a major air pollutant that adversely affects human health, climate and ecosystems. However, its removal in urban environments remains poorly represented in air-quality and climate models, largely due to limited flux-based observations of urban O3 deposition. Using eddy-covariance flux measurements from a meteorological tower in Beijing, we show─for the first time to our knowledge─that surface uptake plays a central role in O3 removal in urban environments but is strongly limited under dry conditions by evaporation and by higher-above-measurement nitrogen monoxide (NO

Growth decline in European beech associated with temperature-driven increase in reproductive allocation.

Climate change is impacting forests in complex ways, with indirect effects arising from interactions between tree growth and reproduction often overlooked. Our 43-y study of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) showed that rising summer temperatures since 2005 have led to more frequent seed production events. This shift increases reproductive effort but depletes the trees' stored resources due to insufficient recovery periods between seed crops. Consequently, annual tree ring increments have declined by 28%, dropping from a stable average of 1.60 mm y-1 between 1980 and 2005 to 1.16 mm y-1 thereaf

Inside the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with Hans-Otto Pörtner.

Hans-Otto Pörtner is a leading animal physiologist based at the University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Germany, who first published in Journal of Experimental Biology in 1986. Since then, he has specialised in the physiology of marine vertebrates and invertebrates, with an interest in the impact of hypoxia and temperature on survival, developing the concept of oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance. It was Pörtner's work on the impact of rising CO2 levels on marine organisms that brought him to the attention of the Intergo

Spatial relationship between land-use/land-cover change and land surface temperature in the Dongting Lake area, China.

The Dongting Lake area (China) is a climate change-sensitive and ecologically fragile area and plays a crucial role in the regulation of the regional climate. In recent decades, rapid social and economic development has led to increased land use/land cover (LULC) changes in the Dongting Lake area, which affect the surface energy balance and hydrological processes. Its contemporary variability under climate change remains highly uncertain. Therefore, we retrieved the Land surface temperature (LST) from the Landsat 7 data and explored its relationship with the LULC types. The results showed that

Potential Risk Areas of Aedes albopictus in South-Eastern Iran: A Vector of Dengue Fever, Zika, and Chikungunya.

The possibility of the rapid and global spread of Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and dengue fever by Aedes albopictus is well documented and may be facilitated by changes in climate. To avert and manage health risks, climatic and topographic information can be used to model and forecast which areas may be most prone to the establishment of Ae. albopictus. We aimed to weigh and prioritize the predictive value of various meteorological and climatic variables on distributions of Ae. albopictus in south-eastern Iran using the Analytical Hierarchy Process. Out of eight factors used to predict the

The needs and experiences of injured workers: a participatory research study.

This paper reports on the findings of a participatory research study in which 290 injured workers in Ontario, Canada responded to a survey that was developed and administered by a group of university researchers in partnership with injured worker peer researchers. The objectives of the study were to gain a broad view of the needs and experiences of injured workers and to develop strategies for change. Findings indicated that many injured workers experience undue financial, emotional and physical hardship during the compensation, treatment and rehabilitation process. These hardships are experie

Environmental suitability for Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) and the occurrence of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis represents an important public health problem in Brazil. The continuous process of urbanization and expansion of human activities in forest areas impacts natural habitats, modifying the ecology of some species of Leishmania, as well as its vectors and reservoirs and, consequently, changes the epidemiological pattern that contributes to the expansion of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil. Here, we discuss Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani, the main vector of ACL, transmitting two dermotropic Leishmania species including Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and Leishm

Tracing the evolution of Lathrobium: A phylogenomic approach using museum specimens.

Megadiverse insect lineages often lack robust phylogenetic frameworks, limiting our ability to understand the processes underlying their diversification and morphological evolution. The rove beetle genus Lathrobium (Staphylinidae: Paederinae), with nearly 800 described species distributed primarily across the Holarctic, exemplifies this challenge, exhibiting extensive morphological convergence and strong geographic structuring. We reconstructed the evolutionary history of Lathrobium using a phylogenomic dataset of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) obtained from both ethanol-preserved and historic

Environmental drivers and predictive modeling of E. coli variability in an urban stream using machine learning approaches.

Surface water quality in urban streams is shaped by complex and spatially variable environmental interactions, limiting the effectiveness of conventional monitoring approaches. This study integrates over 25 years of hydrological, climatic, and water quality data with interpretable machine learning to identify key drivers of Escherichia coli variability in the Las Vegas Wash, a wastewater-influenced urban system. Ensemble models revealed distinct spatial controls on microbial dynamics. At the downstream site, electrical conductivity, total dissolved and suspended solids, climate variables, and

RNA seq analyses of chicken reveals biological pathways involved in acclimation into different geographical locations.

Transcriptome expression reflects genetic response in diverse conditions. In this study, RNA sequencing was utilized to profile multiple tissues such as liver, breast, caecum, and gizzard of Korean commercial chicken raised in Korea and Kyrgyzstan. We analyzed ten samples per tissue from each location to identify candidate genes which are involved in the adaptation of Korean commercial chicken to Kyrgyzstan. At false discovery rate (FDR) < 0.05 and fold change (FC) > 2, we found 315, 196, 167 and 198 genes in liver, breast, cecum, and gizzard respectively as differentially expressed between th

Diagnosing oceanic nutrient deficiency.

The supply of a range of nutrient elements to surface waters is an important driver of oceanic production and the subsequent linked cycling of the nutrients and carbon. Relative deficiencies of different nutrients with respect to biological requirements, within both surface and internal water masses, can be both a key indicator and driver of the potential for these nutrients to become limiting for the production of new organic material in the upper ocean. The availability of high-quality, full-depth and global-scale datasets on the concentrations of a wide range of both macro- and micro-nutrie

[Comparative morphological analysis of peripheral endocrine glands in small mammals inhabiting areas with high levels of radioactive pollutants and exposed to chronic irradiation in laboratory experiments].

The comparative study of cellular-tissue reactions in endocrine organs (thyroid and suprarenal glands, ovary) of rodents exposed to radiation in natural conditions (Radium station in Komi Republic and 30-km zone of Chernobyl APP) and experimental conditions modeling the chronic exposure has been conducted. There is evidence that chronic irradiation in low doses causes morphological disorders in different levels of structural organization (cellular-tissue, organism and population levels). The experimental results showed that observed variations in thyroid, suprarenal glands and ovary by morphom

Ecological complexity and West Nile virus: perspectives on improving public health response.

The emergence of West Nile Virus, as well as other emerging diseases, is linked to complex ecosystem processes such as climate change and constitutes an important threat to population health. Traditional public health intervention activities related to vector surveillance and control tend to be reactive and limited in their ability to deal with multiple epidemics and in their consideration of population health determinants. This paper reviews the current status of West Nile Virus in Canada and describes how complex systems and geographical perspectives help to acknowledge the influence of ecos

Occupational heat exposure and chronic kidney disease risk under climate warming: a retrospective cohort study of petrochemical workers with mechanistic insights.

BACKGROUND: The modifying role of climate warming in the association between occupational heat exposure and chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the related biological mechanisms, remains incompletely understood among petrochemical workers. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 2,649 petrochemical workers in southeastern China between 2013 and 2022. Occupational heat exposure was assessed using on-site wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) measurements, reflecting the overall workplace thermal load arising from ambient temperature, process-related heat sources, humidity, and air movem

Pluvial flood adaptation using nature-based solutions: An integrated biophysical-economic assessment.

Globally, flood events are considered the costliest natural hazard. Changes in precipitation patterns and large areas of impervious surfaces in urban environments are increasing the sensitivity of these systems to runoff production. At the same time, projected global sea-level rise may further increase the frequency of compound flooding due to simultaneous storm surge, sea-level rise and pluvial runoff that cause vast socio-economic and ecological impacts to coastal cities. In this context, over the last decade, the role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) has been recognised to support climate ch

Impact of climate change on Chinese medicinal plants and adaptation strategies.

AIMS: Global climate change threats to plant communities worldwide. This review explicitly narrows its scope exclusively to Chinese medicine plants (CMPs), the core raw materials for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). CMPs are distinguished by clinical efficacy dependent on complex secondary‑metabolite mixtures, geo‑authentic (Daodi) production systems, and large‑scale industrial supply chains. Existing studies remain fragmented, most studies examine single‑factor stress, whereas few systematically link ecological shifts, phytochemical disturbance, clinical therapeutic performance, and indust

Multi-decadal tree-ring stable isotope records of apple and pear trees indicate coherent ecophysiological responses to environmental changes in alpine valleys.

The ecophysiological and ecohydrological impacts of climate change and progressively increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on agroecosystems are not well understood compared to the forest ecosystems. In this study, we utilized the presence of old apple and pear trees in the alpine valleys of Northern Italy (maintained for cultural heritage purposes) to investigate climate-scale physiological responses. We developed long-term tree-ring stable isotopic records (δ13C and δ18O) from apple (1976-2021) and pear trees (1943-2021). This allowed the reconstruction of key ecophysiolo
