A biochemical, histologic and morphometric evaluation of spontaneous, diet-induced (thoracic aorta) and injury-induced (iliac-femoral) atherosclerotic lesions was performed in rabbits maintained on varying levels of dietary cholesterol. Rabbits were meal-fed a 3% peanut oil, 3% coconut oil diet containing 0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% or 2.0% cholesterol for 9 weeks. Plasma total cholesterol exposure (area under cholesterol-time curve (TC-AUC)) increased diet-dependently over the course of the study. VLDL and LDL cholesterol (VLDL-C, LDL-C) comprised 41% and 55%, respectively, of the plasm

Studies are reported on the capacity of isolated rat renal papilla (inner medulla) to synthesize and release prostaglandin (PG) E from endogenous and exogenous precursor(s) during development of an essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency in the rat. Weanling (21-day-old) male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a fat-free diet supplemented with either 5% hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO) or 5% safflower oil (SO). At approximately 3, 6 and 7 weeks (6. 9 and 10 weeks of age), groups of animals fed each diet were killed for studies of PGE synthesis in the renal papillae. Differences in the fatty acid composi

In the realm of colloid and interface science, new types of green surfactants, including anionic Pluronic alcohol ether carboxylate (AEC), branched alkyl glucoside (IG), and zwitterionic coconut oil amide propyl betaine (CAB), have been identified and merit further exploration. AEC, characterized by its inclusion of 5 EO and 3.5 PO units, was synthesized, and its behavior in aqueous solutions with IG and CAB was meticulously examined. Their performance in applications such as foam generation, wetting, and the dispersion and stabilization of graphene was also evaluated. At αAE5P3C = 0.5, AE5P3C

The periodate modified gum arabic was used as a natural-based, non-toxic cross-linker to synthesize hybrid bovine serum albumin-gum arabic aldehyde (BSA-GAA) nanogels by Schiff base reaction through the inverse miniemulsion method for the first time. The synthesis process was performed in the absence of toxic organic solvents using fractionated coconut oil as the continuous phase. The particle size of the nanogels was managed by tweaking the concentration of the surfactants (Span 80/Tween 80) and the total volume of the aqueous phase. Based on the bicinchoninic acid method, the cross-linking e

BACKGROUND: The role of cortisol and its increased action/availability is implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome but the mechanism of increased action/availability is not known. Availability of several other lipophilic hormones, drugs and pollutants are also reported to be increased in obesity. Increased lipids in the circulation are reported to alter the fluidity and permeability of membranes. Hyperlipidemia is also reported to alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of lipophilic molecules and also membrane fluidity and per

The present study investigates the bactericidal and anticancer potential of caprylic acid (CA) against Helicobacter pylori infection, a major global risk factor for gastric cancer. Several chronic inflammatory processes, bacterial virulence factors, and carcinogenic mechanisms-capable of inducing DNA damage in gastric epithelial cells, promoting genomic instability, and contributing to the development of gastritis or peptic ulcer disease in susceptible individuals-remain incompletely understood. CA, a medium-chain fatty acid naturally found in plant and animal sources such as coconut oil and g

Data on types of community first aid use and treatment provided post-injury from many low‒middle-income countries, including India, are lacking. This cross-sectional study was conducted among children aged one month to 18 years of age, in Ujjain, India, to understand types of first aid given and health-seeking post-injury. A total of 1087 injuries in 1049 children were identified in the past year. A total of 729 (67%) injured children received first aid and 758 (70%) sought some form of health care. Children with burns received the most (86%) first aid, and most children (84%) with road traffi

In an experimental model of obesity and hyperglycemia in Drosophila melanogaster we studied the effect of diet modification and administration of metformin on systemic infection with Rhizopus, a common cause of mucormycosis in diabetic patients. Female Wt-type Drosophila flies were fed regular (RF) or high-fat diet (HFD; 30% coconut oil) food with or without metformin for 48 h and then injected with R. oryzae. Survival rates, glucose and triglyceride levels were compared between 1) normal-weight flies (RF), 2) obese flies (HFD), 3) obese flies fed with RF, 4) flies continuously fed on HFD + me

This study examined the influence of the food matrix composition on the chemical and colloidal stability as well as functionality of curcumin-loaded lipid nanoparticles with different lipid phase state (liquid vs. solid). For this, lipid nanoparticles formulated with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), MCT with glyceryl stearate (MCT + GS), or coconut oil (CNUT) were dispersed into aqueous phases with varying degrees of complexity, being aqueous solutions of the main components of cloudy apple juice. The physicochemical characteristics and colloidal stability of curcumin-loaded lipid nanoparticl

Modern western diets have been associated with a reduced proportion of dietary omega-3 fatty acids leading to decreased levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in the brain. Low DHA content has been associated with altered development of visual acuity in infants and also with an altered time course of synapse elimination and plasticity in subcortical visual nuclei in rodents. Microglia has an active role in normal developmental processes such as circuitry refinement and plasticity, and its activation status can be modulated by omega-3 (ω3) and omega-6 (ω6) essential fatty acids. Rations including high amounts of corn silage are currently very common in dairy production. Diets with corn silage as forage source result in a low supply of essential fatty acids, such as α-linolenic acid, and may lead to low conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production. The present study investigated the effects of abomasal infusion of essential fatty acids, especially α-linolenic acid, and CLA in dairy cows fed a corn silage-based diet on performance, milk composition, including fatty acid (FA) pattern, and lipid metabolism from late to early lactation. Rumen-cannulated Holstein cows (n = 40)

The present research aimed to evaluate the effects of the continuative dietary administration of a hemp oil extract containing cannabinoids (cannabidiol, CBD) on the macroscopic morphology, morphometry, and enzymatic activity of different intestinal tracts as well as on the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the cecum of growing rabbits. The research was performed on 16 rabbits randomly selected from 2 experimental groups (8 per group). In detail, 42 sixty-day-old New Zealand White × California rabbits (sex ratio 1:1, average weight 1621.3 ± 46.2 g) were homogeneously divided int

BACKGROUND: Opioid abuse and mortality are ravaging American society, highlighting the need to find alternative effective analgesics with fewer side effects. FDA-approved topical analgesics, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain but can cause adverse effects. Natural compounds, including essential oils, are potential therapeutic alternatives for managing musculoskeletal pain. If these compounds can provide comparable analgesia to FDA-approved products, it will increase the available options for people with pain, improving qual

In this study, a hyaluronic acid (HA)-coated glabridin nanoemulsion was developed for enhanced macrophage uptake using the phase inversion temperature (PIT) method. The optimized cationic nanoemulsion consisted of a 10% w/w 60:40 peppermint oil:virgin coconut oil ratio, 10% w/w Cremophor RH40, 1% w/w cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and 1% w/w ethanol. It exhibited a small droplet size, narrow size distribution, and positive zeta potential. Molecular dynamics simulations supported the experimental results, showing that systems containing a cosurfactant formed smaller droplets than those without

Skin tags, medically known as acrochordons, are harmless growths of the epidermis that commonly develop in areas where the skin folds, such as the neck, armpits, or groin. While usually asymptomatic, these lesions can cause discomfort from rubbing or cosmetic issues. They are more prevalent in middle-aged and older individuals and are often correlated with conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance. The need for more specific treatment options for skin tags poses a significant challenge for healthcare providers, especially since the current methods, including electrodesiccati

Medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCTs), including caprylic acid (C8), a mixture of caprylic acid and capric acid (C8+C10), and high-MCT coconut oil (HMCO), were heated at 180°C. Their volatile profiles were analyzed to determine the MCT degradation mechanisms. As heating time increased to 10 h, secondary oxidation products and acid value of all samples increased continuously. Ketones, alkanes, fatty acid anions, fatty acid esters, and lactones were found in all heated MCTs. 2-Hexanone and heptane were detected in C8 after 2 h of heating, and 2-heptanone, heptanal, methyl octanoate, γ-octalactone

Saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis, but scant work examines the impact of SFA type upon these outcomes. We tested the hypothesis that an obesogenic diet prepared with medium chain SFA (MCSFA), mostly as lauric acid-derived from coconut oil, reduces obesity-induced outcomes compared to obesogenic diets prepared with increasing amounts long chain SFA (LCSFA), primarily palmitic acid. Mice were fed (16 weeks) a control, low fat diet or obesogenic diets prepared with differing content of MCSFA or LCSFA in which polyunsaturated an

Dairy cows are exposed to increased inflammatory processes in the transition period from late pregnancy to early lactation. Essential fatty acids (EFA) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) are thought to modulate the inflammatory response in dairy cows. The present study investigated the effects of a combined EFA and CLA infusion on the fatty acid (FA) status in plasma lipids, and whether changes in the FA pattern were associated with the acute phase and inflammatory response during late pregnancy and early lactation. Rumen-cannulated Holstein cows (n = 40) were assigned from wk 9 antepartum to
