Mapping causal links between prefrontal cortical regions and intra-individual behavioral variability.

Intra-individual behavioral variability is significantly heightened by aging or neuropsychological disorders, however it is unknown which brain regions are causally linked to such variabilities. We examine response time (RT) variability in 21 macaque monkeys performing a rule-guided decision-making task. In monkeys with selective-bilateral lesions in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) or in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, cognitive flexibility is impaired, but the RT variability is significantly diminished. Bilateral lesions within the frontopolar cortex or within the mid-dorsolateral pre

Gender differences in the influence of app-based mindfulness meditation on emotion regulation: a randomised controlled trial.

This study investigated whether gender moderates the effects of online mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on mental health outcomes in non-clinical populations. Specifically, we explored gender-related patterns in emotion regulation and cognitive flexibility. Data were obtained from a randomised controlled trial employing a crossover design in 2022 and 2023. Three hundred Japanese workers employed for at least 20 h weekly were randomly allocated to either an intervention or a waitlist group. The participants engaged in a four-week, app-based MBI involving daily guided practices, including

Neural Signatures of Working Memory in Age-related Hearing Loss.

Age-related hearing loss affects the ability to hear high frequencies and therefore leads to difficulties in understanding speech, particularly under adverse listening conditions. This decrease in hearing can be partly compensated by the recruitment of executive functions, such as working memory. The compensatory effort may, however, lead to a decrease in available neural resources compromising cognitive abilities. We here aim to investigate whether mild to moderate hearing loss impacts prefrontal functions and related executive processes and whether these are related to speech-in-noise percep

Cognitive control capacity as a selective capacity constraint across cognitive control processes: a multimethod examination using network analysis and LASSO regression.

Cognitive control is characterized by severe capacity limitations, yet it remains unclear whether performance constraints across different cognitive control processes reflect independent limitations or shared capacity-related constraints. To investigate this question, we adopted an individual-differences approach and multimethod analyses to examine how cognitive control capacity (CCC), defined as the maximum rate at which the cognitive control system can successfully process task-relevant information, is associated with performance across multiple cognitive-control processes. A sample of 197 h

Optimizing cognitive enhancement through dopamine transporter modulation.

Psychostimulants act on monoamine systems including the dopamine transporter (DAT), a key regulator of dopamine reuptake following synaptic release. While these compounds can enhance energy, cognition, and sociability, their clinical utility is often limited by their abuse potential and peripheral side effects. Research has traditionally focused more on their addictive properties rather than their therapeutic potential. However, certain psychostimulants, such as R-modafinil, enhance cognitive performance without inducing significant euphoria or addiction, making them promising lead candidates

Chronic subthreshold rTMS transiently disrupts learning but enhances memory and flexibility in healthy rats.

Objective.Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation technique with therapeutic potential for the treatment of cognitive disorders. However, its effects on fundamental learning and memory processes in the healthy brain remain poorly understood. We have previously shown that subthreshold rTMS delivered with a miniaturized coil modulates neuronal activities and evoked potentials, but whether these physiological effects translate into cognitive changes remains unknown. Here, we systematically characterize the effects of subthreshold rTMS on lea

Which practice makes perfect? The role of variability and agency in learning adaptive problem solving.

Adaptive problem solving-the ability to flexibly devise solutions to novel challenges-is a hallmark of human intelligence. Yet it remains unclear how best to cultivate this skill through training. Some researchers argue that variable practice promotes learning of generalisable rules, whereas others emphasize repetition and mastery of a single problem space before progressing to another. To address this question, 200 adults solved computerised physical reasoning problems under one of five practice regimens: active high-variable training (AHVT; many different problems), active low-variability tr

Exploring the relationship between inhibitory control and coping behaviour in horses.

The ability to flexibly adapt to the demands of a stressful situation is a key factor in successful coping. Appropriate coping is of critical importance in artificial environments, which may include novel and potentially stressful situations. Being able to inhibit immediate but counterproductive reactions, and thus exert inhibitory control, might allow to better adapt to the environment. Horses are required to flexibly adapt to various housing conditions and training techniques; however, not all horses successfully cope as evidenced by the prevalence of stereotypical behaviours. We tested 31 m

Script-Specific Predictors of Reading Comprehension in Hebrew-Speaking Children With Reading Difficulties.

This study investigates cognitive-linguistic predictors of reading comprehension (RC) in Hebrew-speaking children with reading difficulties (RD). Hebrew's dual orthographic system including vowelized (shallow) and unvowelized (deep) scripts offers a valuable context for examining how cognitive-linguistic predictors differentially support reading across levels of orthographic transparency. A cross-sectional design was used with Grade 3 children with RD, utilising Fisher's Z-tests to identify significant differences in the strength of correlations between predictors and RC across scripts as well

Triterpene and Caffeoylquinic Acid Constituents Contribute to the Cognitive-Enhancing, but Not Anxiolytic, Effects of a Water Extract of Centella asiatica in Aged Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A water extract of the plant Centella asiatica (CAW) has been shown to improve cognitive deficits in aged mice when administered for 5 weeks in drinking water. However, the contribution of the constituent compounds within CAW to the beneficial effects of the extract remains unelucidated. This study evaluated the effects of triterpene (TT) and caffeoylquinic acids (CQA) found within CAW, on learning, cognitive flexibility, memory, and anxiety-like behaviors in aged C57BL6 mice. METHODS: Eighteen-month-old male and female C57BL6 mice were administered either TT, CQA, or t

Cognitive inflexibility moderates the relationship between relief-driven drinking motives and alcohol use.

INTRODUCTION: Drinking motives and neurocognition play significant roles in predicting alcohol use. There is limited research examining how relief-driven drinking motives interact with neurocognition in alcohol use, which would help to elucidate the neurocognitive-motivational profiles most susceptible to harmful drinking. This study investigated the interactions between neurocognition (response inhibition and cognitive flexibility) and relief-driven drinking, in predicting problem drinking. METHODS: Participants completed the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Consumption items (AUD

Memory Flexibility training (MemFlex) to reduce depressive symptomatology in individuals with major depressive disorder: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with chronic biases in the allocation of attention and recollection of personal memories. Impaired flexibility in attention and autobiographical memory retrieval is seen to both maintain current symptoms and predict future depression. Development of innovative interventions to reduce maladaptive cognitive patterns and improve cognitive flexibility in the domain of memory may therefore advance current treatment approaches for depression. Memory specificity training and cognitive bias modification techniques have both shown some promise i

Polarization-sensitive strong field emission from carbon nanotubes.

PURPOSE: Impaired cognitive flexibility is a core feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and may contribute to symptom persistence and variabe therapeutic outcomes. However, traditional measures may adequately capture how cognitive flexibility manifests in daily life. The Flexibility in Daily Life scale (FIDL) is a novel developed self-report instrument assessing multidimensional facets of cognitive flexibility. The present study sought to determine the psychometric structure of the Chinese version of the FIDL and its suitability for individuals within an OCD population. PATIENTS AND

Variability is not flexibility: Emotion regulation switching predicts increased momentary distress when context is stable.

Recent research has challenged the assumption that specific emotion regulation (ER) strategies are universally adaptive, emphasizing instead the importance of fit of ER strategy to emotion-eliciting context (i.e., ER flexibility). However, most studies did not directly assess the context of ER but rely instead on measuring variability in ER as a proxy of flexibility. The current study aims at using a novel computational tool to directly assess ER-context interaction in two studies. Across a daily diary study (Study 1, N = 92, 1,149 diaries) and an ecological momentary assessment study (Study 2

Self-Reported Hearing Loss and Longitudinal Cognitive Function in a Cohort Enriched with Risk for Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests hearing loss is a risk factor for mild cognitive impairment and dementia, but few studies have examined its relationship to sub-clinical cognitive outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of self-reported hearing loss on longitudinal cognitive function in a risk-enriched cohort of clinically-unimpaired, late middle-aged adults. METHODS: 579 participants from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (WRAP) were included. Hearing status was determined via self-reported history of diagnosed hearing loss. Adults with adverse childhood experiences report greater coronavirus anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Adults with early life adversity exhibit heightened response to threat signals in the environment, which makes them vulnerable to developing stress-related mental health problems, including anxiety disorders. Yet, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults who have experienced early life adversity is understudied. Recently, researchers have characterized dysfunctional cognitions about the pandemic, which are associated with negative mental health outcomes, as coronavirus anxiety. We conducted a study to examine the relation between exposure to early life adversity, perceived thr
