Evaluation of the antibiotics effects on the physical and chemical parameters during the co-composting of sewage sludge with palm wastes in a bioreactor.

The objective of this study was to investigate thermal and physicochemical parameters of sewage sludge-palm waste mixtures contaminated by different families of antibiotics (tetracyclines, macrolides and fluoroquinolones) during co-composting. Sludge was spiked with chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), roxithromycin (RXY), enrofloxacin (ENR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). Antibiotics were spiked at a low level, medium level, high level and a control without antibiotics was conducted. The results showed that the organic matter degradation was delayed and the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio was

Prevalence of and relationship between rhinoconjunctivitis and lower airway diseases in compost workers with current or former exposure to organic dust.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The relationship between allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma is well characterized. However, it remains unknown whether an association exists between symptoms of upper and lower airway diseases and occupational bioaerosol exposure beyond the scope of allergy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current cross-sectional study focuses on 190 current and 59 former compost workers exposed to bioaerosols. Work-related symptoms indicative of conjunctivitis, rhinitis and lower airway irritation were assessed and compared with 38 non-exposed control subjects. Allergic asthma was d

FeSO4-Zeolite Coupled with Low Aeration Enhances Humic Acid Stability by Regulating Synthesis and Iron-Mediated Passivation in Food Waste Composting.

Humic acid (HA) stability determines the food waste (FW) compost quality and facilitates organic waste recycling via aerobic composting. This study investigated the synergistic effects of ferrous sulfate (FeSO4)-zeolite and low aeration to enhance the HA stability during FW composting. Composting was carried out for 50 days across four treatments: control (CK), FeSO4-zeolite (FZ), low aeration (L), and combined FZL treatments. Results showed that FZL achieved the highest HA content (33.1 mg/g) and condensed HAC3 proportion (18.3%), raising the HA polymerization degree by 84.9% relative to CK.

Oxygen availability shapes microbial community composition and function to determine antibiotic resistance genes and expression during composting: A pilot-scale study.

Temperature was considered the primary factor reducing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting, with oxygen availability serving as the fundamental driver of temperature differences. However, how different oxygen levels shaped the composition and function of microbial communities, and subsequently affected ARGs and resistance expression during composting, remained unclear. Here, a pilot-scale long-term thermophilic aerobic and mesophilic facultative composting were constructed with metagenomics and stress (Oxygen/Antibiotic) plate screening to reveal the resistance potential and d

Gypsum-based idol immersion waste as a novel additive for improved heavy metal immobilization during in-vessel composting of organic waste.

Idol immersion waste (IIW) generated during Indian festivals is an emerging source of aquatic pollution due to heavy metals released from gypsum-based idols and synthetic pigments. This study investigated laboratory-scale in-vessel composting as a circular strategy for detoxification and resource recovery of IIW. Six bioreactors containing food waste, garden waste, cow manure, biochar, and varying gypsum proportions were operated for 30 days. ICP-OES analysis identified elevated Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn in idol-derived residues. Sequential extraction revealed progressive transformation of me

Effects of microbial inoculation on mitigating odor release, curtailing nitrogen and sulfur losses, and accelerating the maturation during food-waste composting.

A thermotolerant, odor-suppressing microbial agent was inoculated into food-waste (FW) composting to systematically evaluate its influence on odorants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microbial community structure, extracellular enzyme activities, and the transcriptional profile of nitrogen- and sulfur-cycle genes. Compared with the uninoculated control, cumulative emissions of NH3, H2S, ethanol, and acetaldehyde declined by 73.45%, 65.30%, 40.22%, and 37.20%, respectively, in the bio-augmented reactor. NH3 High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that the inoculation enhanced the micro

Synergistic effects of biochar and cellulase on carbon emission reduction and humification during co-composting of cattle manure and sugarcane bagasse.

INTRODUCTION: The emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) during composting not only contributes to the greenhouse effect but also leads to carbon loss, thereby reducing humus production and compromising the quality of the final compost product. This study investigated the efficacy and underlying mechanisms of biochar and cellulase addition, individually and in combination, in mitigating emissions and enhancing compost quality within a cattle manure-sugarcane bagasse co-composting system. METHODS: By monitoring key composting parameters and combining with high-throughput sequencing

Microbial inoculation enhanced the thermophilic phase and improved final maturity-related properties of coffee husk composting for tomato seedling substrate production.

Coffee husk composting is constrained by high lignocellulose content, slow decomposition, and residual phytotoxicity. Whether microbial inoculation can accelerate this process while producing a horticultural growing medium remains unclear. We compared coffee husks composted with a commercial microbial agent (a consortium of photosynthetic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, yeast, filamentous fungi, and actinomycetes) (CHM) versus without (CH) over 180 days. The CHM treatment reached a higher peak temperature (55.6 °C vs. 43.5 °C) and at the end of composting achieved a numerically greater seed ge

Bacillus smithii XT-3 inoculation reduces ammonia emissions and promotes humification during co-composting of Siraitia grosvenorii residue and pig manure.

The co-composting of Siraitia grosvenorii residue and pig manure frequently faces challenges associated with substantial nitrogen loss and insufficient humification. To address these issues, the Bacillus smithii strain XT-3 was inoculated into the co-composting system to enhance nitrogen retention and promote humus formation during composting. The underlying mechanisms were further elucidated through metagenomic analysis. Inoculation with strain XT-3 reduced cumulative NH3 emissions by 27.8% and increased humic acid content by 17.02%. Temporal variations in humic substances presented a synchro

Sustainable decentralized food waste composting using a pulse alternating ventilation pilot-scale device: Case study based on LCA and LCC analysis.

Currently few efficient decentralized composting reactors have been developed, and there is also little exploration into their comprehensive environmental impact and carbon emissions. This study developed a continuous pulse alternating ventilation composting pilot device, SC-PAVCR. Results demonstrated that SC-PAVCR effectively maintained the thermophilic phase during the 120-day operation period. The organic matter degradation degree reached 44.05 %, and the humic acid content increased to 91.21 g·kg-1, accounting for 0.53 of the total organic carbon.
