SIAgent: Spatial Interaction Agent via LLM-Powered Eye-Hand Motion Intent Understanding in VR.

Eye-hand coordinated interaction is becoming a mainstream interaction modality in Virtual Reality (VR) user interfaces. Current paradigms for this multimodal interaction require users to learn predefined gestures and memorize multiple gesture-task associations, which can be summarized as an "Operation-to-Intent" paradigm. This paradigm increases users' learning costs and has low interaction error tolerance. In this paper, we propose SIAgent, a novel "Intent-to-Operation" framework allowing users to express interaction intents through natural eye-hand motions based on common sense and habits. O

FovealNet: Advancing AI-Driven Gaze Tracking Solutions for Efficient Foveated Rendering in Virtual Reality.

Leveraging real-time eye tracking, foveated rendering optimizes hardware efficiency and enhances visual quality virtual reality (VR). This approach leverages eye-tracking techniques to determine where the user is looking, allowing the system to render high-resolution graphics only in the foveal region-the small area of the retina where visual acuity is highest, while the peripheral view is rendered at lower resolution. However, modern deep learning-based gaze-tracking solutions often exhibit a long-tail distribution of tracking errors, which can degrade user experience and reduce the benefits

[Modeling corneal topography with a subdivision scheme in keratoconus].

BACKGROUND: Videokeratoscopy is often unable to obtain complete data sets in cases of irregular or asymmetric corneal topography. Subdivision schemes are very common in computer graphics for completion and smoothing of surfaces. Based on a network of triangular facets a smooth and complete surface in a standard coordinate system can be derived from topographic raw data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined 88 patients with keratoconus and 40 normal controls. Polygons and polyhedra were defined from videokeratoscopic height data, and a surface was modeled using a modified butterfly subdivision sc

Spatial scale interactions in stereo sensitivity and the neural representation of binocular disparity.

How are binocular disparities encoded and represented in the human visual system? An 'encoding cube' diagram is introduced to visualise differences between competing models. To distinguish the models experimentally, the depth-increment-detection function (discriminating disparity d from d +/- delta d) was measured as a function of standing disparity (d) with spatially filtered random-dot stereograms of different centre spatial frequencies. Stereothresholds degraded more quickly as standing disparity was increased with stimuli defined by high rather than low centre spatial frequency. This is co

Three-dimensional computergraphic analysis of apraxia. Neural representations of learned movement.

The left cerebral hemisphere in man contains anatomical structures specialized not only for language but also for higher-order motor programming. One method of studying the nature of these motor programs is by observing the type of errors made by patients who have left hemisphere damage. A major problem, however, in investigating the disorders that result from failure of this specialized left hemisphere system (the apraxias) has been the difficulty in obtaining objective measurement of movement in three-dimensional space. To this end, we provide the first three-dimensional analysis of the natu

Surface of the brain: three-dimensional MR images created with volume rendering.

Image processing and volume rendering have been applied to magnetic resonance (MR) images to produce three-dimensional views of the surface of the brain. Four healthy volunteers and 17 patients with a variety of disorders underwent MR imaging of the head, and these images were processed and subjected to volume rendering. The resulting three-dimensional views depict abnormalities of the brain surface, as well as important landmarks of normal brain surface anatomy such as precentral, postcentral, superior temporal, and inferior frontal gyri, which are difficult to identify on cross-sectional ima

A comparison of computational methodologies for the structural modelling of biologically relevant zinc complexes.

The impact of a variety of modern computational methods on the structure of biologically relevant zinc complexes is studied. Different density functionals and a Hartree-Fock-based method, scalar-relativistic effects, and basis set integration grid choices, among others, are assessed for set of high-resolution crystallographic structures. While a previous study recommends incorporating relativistic effects into density functional theory calculations in order to improve the accuracy of obtained geometries for small Zn(II) coordination compounds, we show that, for the set in study, relativistic e

PhenoLearn: a user-friendly toolkit for image annotation and deep learning-based phenotyping for biological datasets.

The digitization of natural history specimens has unlocked opportunities for large-scale phenotypic trait analysis. In recent years, deep learning has shown significant results in accurately predicting annotations on 2D specimen photographs. However, it can be challenging for biologists without extensive related expertise to easily use deep learning. Here, we introduce PhenoLearn, a toolkit developed for biologists to generate annotations on 2D specimen images using deep learning. PhenoLearn integrates graphical user interfaces (GUIs) within its two main modules, PhenoLabel for image annotatio

Medial and Lateral Posterior Tibial Slope in the Skeletally Immature: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: An increased posterior tibial slope (PTS) results in greater force on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and is a risk factor for ACL injuries. Biomechanical studies have suggested that a reduction in the PTS angle may lower the risk of ACL injuries. However, the majority of these investigations have been in the adult population. PURPOSE: To assess the mean medial and lateral PTS on pediatric cadaveric specimens without known knee injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A total of 39 pediatric knee specimens with computed tomography scans

Development of virtual environment for treating acrophobia.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a new technology that makes humans communicate with computer. It allows the user to see, hear, feel and interact in a three-dimensional virtual world created graphically. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been recently used in the treatment of subjects diagnosed with acrophobia, a disorder that is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights, avoidance of heights, and a resulting interference in functioning. Conventional virtual reality system for the treatment of acrophobia has a limitation in scope that it is based

Analysis on Mitigation of Visually Induced Motion Sickness by Applying Dynamical Blurring on a User's Retina.

Visually induced motion sickness (MS) experienced in a 3D immersive virtual environment (VE) limits the widespread use of virtual reality (VR). This paper studies the effects of a saliency detection-based approach on the reduction of MS when the display on a user's retina is dynamic blurred. In the experiment, forty participants were exposed to a VR experience under a control condition without applying dynamic blurring, and an experimental condition applying dynamic blurring. The experimental results show that the participants under the experimental condition report a statistically significant

Calibration of a 3D endoscopic system based on active stereo method for shape measurement of biological tissues and specimen.

For endoscopic medical treatment, measuring the size and shape of the lesion, such as a tumor, is important for the improvement of diagnostic accuracy. We are developing a system to measure the shapes and sizes of living tissue by active stereo method using a normal endoscope on which a micro pattern projector is attached. In order to perform 3D reconstruction, estimating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the endoscopic camera and the pattern projector is required. Particularly, calibration of the pattern projector is difficult. In this paper, we propose a simultaneous estimation metho

Pixel-level robust digital image correlation.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a well-established non-contact optical metrology method. It employs digital image analysis to extract the full-field displacements and strains that occur in objects subjected to external stresses. Despite recent DIC progress, many problematic areas which greatly affect accuracy and that can seldomly be avoided, received very little attention. Problems posed by the presence of sharp displacement discontinuities, reflections, object borders or edges can be linked to the analysed object's properties and deformation. Other problematic areas, such as image noise,

Objectifying Social Presence: Evaluating Multimodal Degraders in ECAs Using the Heard Text Recall Paradigm.

Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) are key social interaction partners in various virtual reality (VR) applications, with their perceived social presence significantly influencing the quality and effectiveness of user-ECA interactions. This article investigates the potential of a novel indirect objective proxy for evaluating social presence, which is traditionally assessed through subjective questionnaires. As proxy we use the Heard Text Recall (HTR) paradigm, originally designed to assess memory performance in listening tasks. In the task participants have to recall information from family

Floor-vibration VR: Mitigating Cybersickness Using Whole-body Tactile Stimuli in Highly Realistic Vehicle Driving Experiences.

This work addresses cybersickness, a major barrier to successful long-exposure immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences since user discomfort frequently leads to prematurely ending such experiences. Starting from sensory conflict theory, we posit that if a vibrating floor delivers vestibular stimuli that minimally match the vibration characteristics of a scenario, the size of the conflict between the visual and vestibular senses will be reduced and, thus, the incidence and/or severity of cybersickness will also be reduced. We integrated a custom-built, computer-controlled vibrating floor in

You Spin my Head Right Round: Threshold of Limited Immersion for Rotation Gains in Redirected Walking.

In virtual environments, the space that can be explored by real walking is limited by the size of the tracked area. To enable unimpeded walking through large virtual spaces in small real-world surroundings, redirection techniques are used. These unnoticeably manipulate the user's virtual walking trajectory. It is important to know how strongly such techniques can be applied without the user noticing the manipulation-or getting cybersick. Previously, this was estimated by measuring a detection threshold (DT) in highly-controlled psychophysical studies, which experimentally isolate the effect bu

Numerical and experimental study of blood flow through a patient-specific arteriovenous fistula used for hemodialysis.

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) pathologies related to blood flow necessitate valid calculation tools for local velocity and wall shear stress determination to overcome the clinical diagnostic limits. To illustrate this issue, a reconstructed patient-specific AVF was investigated, using computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The aim of this study was to validate the methodology from medical images to numerical simulations of an AVF by comparing numerical and experimental data. Two numerical grids were presented with a refinement difference of a factor of four. A
