Ensuring bladder volume reproducibility and reducing cone-beam computed tomography-related radiation exposure in prostate hypofractionated radiotherapy by a Certified Nurse in Radiation Oncology nursing.

The role of the Certified Nurse in Radiation Oncology nursing (CN-RO) has expanded to include support for ensuring treatment reproducibility and minimizing medical radiation exposure through radiation protection measures. In hypofractionated radiotherapy for prostate cancer, in which consistent pretreatment bladder volume is more critical than in conventional fractionation, whether CN-RO intervention contributes to bladder volume reproducibility and reduction of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) frequency, lowering radiation exposure, was investigated. Sixty prostate cancer patients undergo

Validation of Family Medicine Point-of-Care Ultrasound Screening (POCUS) for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) carry a mortality rate as high as 80% . Early detection through a screening ultrasound can lead to a large mortality reduction. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has preliminary data suggesting it is as accurate as hospital-based ultrasounds performed by a sonographer. This validation study investigated the relative concordance of family physicians using POCUS to determine aortic diameter compared with hospital-based ultrasound studies. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional, multi-observation study conducted at 3 office practices. Five fa

Enhanced detection of atrial fibrillation in single-lead electrocardiograms using a Cloud-based artificial intelligence platform.

BACKGROUND: Although smartphone-based devices have been developed to record 1-lead electrocardiogram (ECG), existing solutions for automatic detection of atrial fibrillation (AF) often has poor positive predictive value. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate a Cloud-based deep-learning platform for automatic AF detection in a large cohort of patients using 1-lead ECG records. METHODS: We analyzed 8528 patients with 30-second ECG records from a single-lead handheld ECG device. Ground truth for AF presence was established through a benchmark algorithm and expert manual labeling. The Willem A

Repurposing catheter ablation work-up to detect expiratory airflow limitation in patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: In atrial fibrillation (AF) patients, presence of expiratory airflow limitation may negatively impact treatment outcomes. AF patients are not routinely screened for expiratory airflow limitation, but existing examinations can help identify at-risk individuals. We aimed to assess the diagnostic value of repurposing existing assessments from the pre-ablation work-up to identify and understand the characteristics of affected patients. METHODS: We screened 110 consecutive AF patients scheduled for catheter ablation with handheld spirometry. Routine pre-ablation work-up included cardia

Three-Dimensional Calvarial Growth in Spring-Assisted Cranioplasty for Correction of Sagittal Synostosis.

Spring-assisted cranioplasty (SAC) is a minimally invasive technique for treating sagittal synostosis in young infants. Yet, follow-up data on cranial growth in patients who have undergone SAC are lacking. This project aimed to understand how the cranial shape develops during the postoperative period, from spring insertion to removal. 3D head scans of 30 consecutive infants undergoing SAC for sagittal synostosis were acquired using a handheld scanner pre-operatively, immediately postoperatively, at follow-up and at spring removal; 3D scans of 41 age-matched control subjects were also acquired.

Boundary determination of foot ulcer images by applying the associative hierarchical random field framework.

As traditional visual-examination-based methods provide neither reliable nor consistent wound assessment, several computer-based approaches for quantitative wound image analysis have been proposed in recent years. However, these methods require either some level of human interaction for proper image processing or that images be captured under controlled conditions. However, to become a practical tool of diabetic patients for wound management, the wound image algorithm needs to be able to correctly locate and detect the wound boundary of images acquired under less-constrained conditions, where

Recurrent branch of anterior interosseous artery perforator-based propeller flap for distal forearm injuries: Report of 2 cases.

Despite various options for the reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the distal forearm, perforator-based propeller flap is rarely used. Here, we presented 2 cases of distal forearm injuries that were repaired using the recurrent branch of anterior interosseous artery perforator-based propeller flap. Patients in these cases were 57 and 67 years of age. Wounds resulting from farming machine injury and pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis following cat bite wounds were localized to the distal forearm and dorsum of the hand. Defect dimensions were 5 cm × 10 cm and 5 cm × 8 cm. The 12 cm × 7 cm and

Microvascular distribution in the ocular conjunctiva and digestive tract in an experimental setting.

UNLABELLED: Recently improved microcirculatory imaging techniques, such as orthogonal polarization spectral (OPS) and its technical successor sidestream dark field (SDF) imaging, in handheld devices have allowed a direct observation of the microcirculation at the bedside. Usually a cut-off of 20 µm in diameter is used to differentiate small vessels (mainly capillaries) from large vessels (mainly venules) during this technique. We hypothesized that it was possible to measure the small vessels with a considerably smaller inner diameter. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Images of the sublingual, conjunctiv

A Handheld Ultrasound Device Can Predict Constipation with Rectal Fecal Retention in a Palliative Care Setting.

Although handheld ultrasound devices (HUDs) are commonplace, their ability to diagnose fecal retention (FR) remains unclear. This prospective observational study examined HUDs' usefulness in diagnosing FR in patients with constipation in a palliative care setting. Between 10 December 2020 and 30 June 2022, we compared rectal ultrasonographic findings obtained using HUDs with clinical manifestations in 64 males and 70 females (48%, 52%, 68 ± 11 years old) with constipation who had undergone computed tomography (CT). FR was diagnosed using a HUD and compared with CT and digital rectal examinatio
