University students are at increased risk of HIV infection, but little is known about the determinants of inconsistent condom use among them. The study aims to assess the association of sociodemographic, individual, dyadic, and social factors with inconsistent condom use among male university students. Of 1091 participants, 67.0% had sexual intercourse, though 64.4% had inconsistent condom use. It was found that "did not use a condom at first sexual intercourse" (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 6.1; CI, 3.7-10.1), "history of STIs" (AOR, 2.1; CI, 1.0-4.2), low "self-efficacy" (AOR, 2.4; CI, 1.3-4.7)

Condom catheters are widely used in the management of male urinary incontinence, bedridden patients, and geriatric population. They are considered to be safe; however they are associated with serious complications in case of an incorrect use. We report a dramatic case of penile strangulation by condom catheter tardily discovered till occurrence of necrosis and gangrene leading to death in an elderly bedridden and diabetic man. Through this case we emphasize the importance of patient education for the correct use of condom catheters and remind care providers to maintain a high level of sensibil

BACKGROUND: Incarceration history is associated with lower rates of condom use and increased HIV risk. Less is known about duration of incarceration and multiple incarcerations' impact on condom use post-release.
METHODS: In the current study, we surveyed 1,416 adults in Mississippi about their incarceration history and sexual risk behaviors. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to test associations between duration of incarceration, multiple incarcerations, socio-demographic factors, substance use, sexual behavior, and event level condom use at last sex.
RESULTS: After adjusting

BACKGROUND: Identifying malleable predictors of condom use in a clinic-based population may benefit efforts to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
PURPOSE: To prospectively test associations between three measures (relational-trust factors, fit and feel, and dislike of condom use) and perfect condom use in patients attending clinics diagnosing STIs.
METHODS: A convenience sample was recruited from five clinics in three U.S. cities. Data were collected from December 2007 through April 2011. Daily electronic diaries were completed for up to 180 days. Occasions of penile-vaginal int

INTRODUCTION: The HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Gabon in 2011 was 5% among subjects aged 15 to 49 years. The objective of this study was to describe sexuality and condom use among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH) by comparing those living in the capital with those living in two provinces of Gabon: Ogowe-Maritime (Port-Gentil) and Ogowe-Moyen (Lambaréné).
METHODS: A 5-month, cumulative, cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted between May 2009 and September 2010 among PLWH over the age of 18 years, attending Gabon treatment centres and treated with ARVs for at least six months. A simpl

Research suggests that many men have used a variety of tactics to avoid using condoms when having sex with women. Guided by previous work demonstrating that men's use of coercive condom resistance tactics was predicted by negative attitudes toward women, inconsistent condom use, multiple partners, and sexual sensation seeking, the current study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to determine whether similar constructs were associated with a variety of resistance tactics. A community sample of 313 moderate-drinking men participated, of whom 80% reported employing at least one condom use resista

Money boys (MBs) who typically sell sex to males have not yet been extensively studied in China. In this 2009 study, 28 venue-based MBs were interviewed. We analyzed their condom use behaviors with various partners, including male and female clients, male and female casual partners, other MBs and female sex workers, and boyfriends and girlfriends. All participants were aware of the need for using condoms; however, usage with different partner types varied. The longer a relationship with a partner, the less frequent was condom use. A major reason for not using condoms was that they or their par

BACKGROUND: Social and structural influences of condom negotiation among female sex workers (FSWs) remain understudied. This study assesses environmental and individual factors associated with condom negotiation among FSWs at high risk for acquiring HIV in a large urban setting of Metro Manila, Philippines.
METHODS: Female bar/spa workers (N = 498), aged 18 and over, underwent interview-led surveys examining their sexual health practices in the context of their risk environments. Data were collected from April 2009-January 2010 from 54 venues. Multiple logistic regressions were conducted to a

To date, research on the link between poverty and unsafe sexual behaviors has utilized limited measures of socioeconomic status and has overlooked key dimensions of poverty at the individual level. This study explored how various dimensions of socioeconomic status are associated with inconsistent condom use and how these associations vary by gender. We analyzed unique life history survey data from 261 young men and women in Kisumu, Kenya, and conducted analyses based on 959 person-months in which respondents had been sexually active in nonmarital relationships. Dependent variables were inconsi

Researchers have raised concerns that microbicide use during clinical trials would displace condom use. We sought to understand whether condom use changed for participants in a microbicide clinical trial in Pune, India, to understand whether condom shifts were a legitimate concern. We hypothesize that women participating in a microbicide clinical trial in Pune, India, were more likely, on average, to report condom use at follow-up. We further hypothesize that men, whose female partners participated in a microbicide clinical trial were more likely, on average, to report condom use at follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: This paper examines the prevalence of and the factors associated with condom use in a sample of 283 young adult ecstasy users.
METHODS: The study, which relied upon targeted sampling and ethnographic mapping, took place between 2002 and 2004. It entailed conducting two-hour-long, face-to-face interviews in the Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area.
RESULTS: Condom use was inconsistent; only 35.2% of all sex acts were protected. Using multiple regression, five factors were related to condom use: race (Caucasians used condoms less than other groups), income (lower income = greater cond

This paper analyses two female sexual practices in Tete Province, Mozambique: (1) the practice of elongating the labia minora and (2) what is sometimes called 'dry sex' involving the insertion of natural and/or synthetic products into the vagina or the ingestion of these products orally. These practices are fundamental to the construction of female identity, eroticism and the experience of pleasure. Notions such as 'closed/open', 'dry/damp', 'hot/cold', 'heavy/light', 'life/death', 'wealth/poverty' and 'sweet/not sweet' are central to local understandings of sexual practices and reproduction.

The objective of this paper is to describe the sexual behaviour of 665 unmarried men aged 15-24, and explore factors associated with condom use at last intercourse. We use data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in economically marginal areas of Phnom Penh and Kratie town, Cambodia. One-third of respondents reported intercourse and half had had sex by the time they were 23. Of these, 39% had given money or gifts in exchange for sex. Transactional sex often occurred in the company of other males, and condom use was higher among those males compared with those who were alone. Of all sexuall

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of condom use with chlamydia infection in men attending a large sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic in Australia.
STUDY: Computerized records for all attendances between July 2002 and June 2003 were included and separate analyses were performed for men reporting male-to-male sexual contact (MSM) and for men reporting heterosexual contact only (non-MSM). Associations among age, condom use, and number of partners with chlamydia infection were assessed.
RESULTS: Chlamydia was diagnosed at a rate of 8.6 cases per 100 consultations (95%CI: 7.1, 10

The association of violence victimization with current condom use in HIV-infected persons was examined in this cross-sectional study. The HIV-Alcohol Longitudinal Cohort (HIV-ALC) recruited HIV-infected participants with a history of alcohol problems. Interviews assessed violence histories and current sexual behaviors. Of the 349 participants (79% men), 38% reported inconsistent condom use and 80% reported a violence history. Lifetime sexual violence was reported by 40% and lifetime physical violence (without sexual violence) by 40%. Participants reporting lifetime sexual violence had greater

The objective of this analysis was to assess the effect of introducing the diaphragm on condom use patterns. Participants included one hundred eighty-nine women attending family planning clinics in Harare, Zimbabwe who reported less than 100% condom use. The proportion of acts where at least one method was used significantly increased over using follow-up; male condom use remained stable. A diaphragm was used with 50% to 54% of acts; male condoms were also used about 50% of the time. The proportion of acts where a female condom was used decreased. Women who used both male and female condoms we

CONTEXT: Hormonal contraceptive users may be at increased risk for HIV and other STDs. An understanding of their decisions and abilities to use condoms is needed to focus intervention programs aimed at improving their protective behaviors.
METHODS: Between 1999 and 2001, 426 new users of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and oral contraceptives were recruited from public clinics providing family planning services to low-income women and surveyed when they began their method and again three months later. Bivariate analyses examined the consistency of condom use across subgroups, and mul

BACKGROUND: Unsafe sexual behavior is common among persons with negative or unknown HIV status and it is augmented by alcohol use in some populations. We examined the association between alcohol consumption level (abstinent, moderate, at-risk) and inconsistent condom use in a cohort of HIV-infected individuals with a history of alcohol problems.
METHODS: Subjects (n=345) had up to seven structured interviews over 36 months. Identical questions on alcohol consumption and inconsistent condom use were asked at each interview. We used generalized estimating equations (GEE) multivariate logistic r

This study longitudinally examines the relation between a history of experiencing childhood and adult physical or sexual abuse, and male condom use by women with or at risk for HIV. Abuse history and prospective condom use data were collected from 214 HIV infected and 189 uninfected women participating in the HIV Epidemiology Research Study (HERS) who were inconsistent condom users at baseline and received two safer sex counseling sessions. Analyses were conducted to assess the association between abuse history and condom use while controlling for sociodemographic variables and other risk fact
